Chapter Eight: Invitations and intentions The living room glowed with the sharp flicker of a PS5 screen, the sound of digital cleats pounding turf filling the Savage residence. Xander leaned forward on the couch, jaw tight, thumbs moving with aggressive precision on the controller. Wendy sprawled beside him, legs tucked beneath her, eyes glued to the match but her mouth moving nonstop. “I still can’t believe him,” she snapped, crashing her virtual player into Xander’s. “Just swooping in like some hero. Carrying her like she’s some damsel in distress.”

My revelations keep her quiet before a small smile breaks across from her face. “We have been waiting for him to come home, you know?” The doctor asks, me taking my hands in a gentle squeeze. I don’t ask for clarification, because I already know who she is talking about; Xander. The first-born son of a fated pair, and the rightful inheritance of Willowa. Until he is killed, beaten, or officially relinquishes that hold.

“I haven’t heard Xander’s name since I was a child – I, too, thought he died in quiet obscurity. He’s taken great pains, I think, to ensure that everyone assumed that he did. He is playing the long game – we’re not total idiots for falling into the traps he’s taken twenty years to lay. We’re simply outplayed.” “So,” I interrupt, still wanting more details. “Can you – I mean –“ I exhale quickly, closing my eyes and gathering my thoughts, “is the assumption that we’re making here that Xander wanted Rafe to be born so that he would be a legitimate heir to Xavier’s throne? Is that it?”

I scoffed internally and slowly moved towards the kitchen, leaving my father to the single couch. He felt exhausted and worried for my mother. “You can never be my bride, Ms. Naomi Thorne. A woman like you who can go to any extent to achieve her goal can’t be my wife.” Xander answered her coldly. I didn’t want to be a part of this conversation. “But Xyla is the heir of this pack. She can’t marry you.” Naomi screamed, and I felt a headache coming on. “Whether she can marry me or not, that’s between her and me. You worry about yourself now.” Threat was evident in Xander’s voice.

"You will have all the money you need to raise him. No matter what happens I will continue to take care of you two" Ignoring her tone, he smiles. But she remains to be confused. "I dont need your money to raise him" She seriously retorted. "I know, but it's his birthright to have all the money under my name" he argues. "His life as a Wright is his inheritance from me. I will let him experience what it is to be a Wright. I will convince him to claim this heritage"

“Try again.” He shot her a glare but didn’t fight her for it. “Shit’s hitting the fan back home.” My stomach dropped. That didn't sound good in any way. “Define ‘home.’” Xander leaned back, staring at the ceiling. “My father’s dying, and he wants me to take over.” “Take over what?” Aria asked, brows furrowing. Xander’s jaw tightened. “The Skulls,” he muttered. Aria blinked. “The what?”

“The only reason Xander is showing any interest in you is because he needs an Alpha female to be able to inherit the pack.” “You’re not making any sense,” I responded with a frown. As the Alpha’s only child, he was not in competition with anyone for the Alpha position. What would he need an Alpha female for? “Let me break it down for you then.” He stopped in front of me. “Alpha Liam has stated that Xander will not inherit the pack if he doesn’t mate with an alpha she-wolf.” What? Was it possible to deny an Alpha his birthright? “Who would inherit the pact then? Does he have another child?” I asked.

I felt my grandfather’s eyes linger for quite a bit, before he cleared his throat and began. “Leanna Thorn. You invoked the sacred Lunar trials, using your right as a member of the ruling family, laying your claim to the throne of Alpha,” he started, the air in the hall turning ceremonial. My gaze remained fixated on the ground as I wanted nothing more than to run away. A part of me even wished for that arrogant alpha to show himself and somehow mess things up. I turned to the side, instantly finding his figure in the crowd, but to my disappointment, he just stood silently, watching everything play out with the cold arrogance of a peak predator.

Gaspare continued watching me with that same half-smile. The broken glass cut into my palm. The blood flowing from my hand pulled my crumbling sanity back from the edge. I dropped the bottle. Gaspare nodded with satisfaction. "I knew you'd be more sensible than she was." … After that day, I stopped resisting. I accepted every arrangement Gaspare made for me. I was just a fake heiress with a borrowed name in the Toscano family, so trying to take down Gaspare on my own was impossible. I had no power, no resources.

"I have a contract you might find very interesting. Meet me in an hour." The war for the heirloom was on hold. The war for the Vane family’s extinction had just begun. And I was going to make sure it cost Xavier everything he ever feared losing.
