Mari immediately stood up beside me. Her icy blue eyes were entirely soft, filled with a profound, heartbreaking empathy. She reached out, gently wrapping her warm hand around my trembling forearm, giving my shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
"Love," Mari suggested softly, her voice a calm anchor in the middle of my storm. "Maybe you should just give your mum a call? Just to ask."
I looked down at her, my breathing shallow and erratic. "You’re right," I sighed, the fight suddenly draining out of me.
