Invitations. Bills. Bank statements. I wonder why so many companies cling to the past, insisting on still using ink and paper rather than automating everything and saving the planet. To be fair, most of them are informing me of Christmas and New Years sales or are from newsletters I've signed up to over the years that I can't figure out how to unsubscribe to. As I get closer to the bottom of the list, one makes me audibly gasp as I stare at the subject of the email.

All of it passes through my assistant Wiwin's sorting system before it reaches me. That morning, a small black envelope sat at the very top of the pile, tagged with a bright pink Post-it — Wiwin's favorite color — in her neat handwriting: Confidential. From Ms. Gio. Inside: a minimalist matte black card. In the center, a single embossed magnolia. No phone number. An encrypted barcode on the back, and one line stamped in gold foil:

“Where is she getting the money for this?” “Her illegal operations are keeping her afloat—for now. But Mathew’s already cut off half of them. She’s bleeding resources,” Killian explained. When we finally got home, Jace, Killian, and Roacher went their separate ways. Hazel and I walked into the lobby, and I noticed something strange in our mailbox—a letter. No return name. A UK address. Hazel narrowed her eyes at the envelope in my hand. “That’s rare. You better open it.”
