The noise from downstairs signaled James’s arrival, and hurriedly, I ran down the staircase to welcome him with the great news. At last, we could have our own child, something we had both always wanted.
Stepping into the living room, I froze instantly.
There, sprawled across the couch, was my husband, James—naked and tangled in the arms of my half-sister, Kristie.
A sharp pain tore through my chest at the gut-wrenching sight, and my vision became blurred. Slowly, hot tears spilled down my cheeks, each one burning with betrayal.
But they didn’t stop; they acted like I was invisible, giggling and moaning as they carried on with their disgraceful act.
It can't be James and Kristie, they were the two people closest to me. I trusted them with everything.
Suddenly the air turned suffocating, and all I wanted was to get away. Surely, my imagination was playing with my head. James cannot betray me; the love we share was too strong.
Moments later, I was all alone, wandering in the street, and mumbling.
Why? My heart was bleeding, trembling, cracking and shattering at the same time.
“Hello, my lady,” a young man approached me from behind.
My first reaction was to scream, *go away* but helpless, I fell into his strong arms, surrendering. His warmth masculine smell providing the comfort I so much desired.
“I don’t deserve this,” I sobbed.
“I know you don’t, Tilda,” he whispered.
My body stiffened. How did the stranger know my name? However, I was drunk, way too drunk to care.
“You shouldn’t let go of yourself this way?” he said, worry laced in his tone.
“Kristie was supposed to be my sister,” I whispered. “I shared everything with her. Why would she do this? Why with James?”
He sighed. “They are the losers here, Tilda. It is late and you shouldn’t be out here by yourself.”
I never expected an answer, at least not from him. But his voice felt soothing, reassuring. Something in it that made me trust him. “Please take me, I want to be far from them,” I begged, clutching on to him tightly.
The next morning, I woke up in an unfamiliar room with an uneasy feeling.
“What am I doing here?” I glanced around, my memory a haze, my body tense.
I took the note on the table and stared at the words.
*Wait for me, Tilda. I will be back soon.*
My pulse quickened. Who was he? I needed to leave this place, and ignoring the servants who tried to stop me, I rushed home. It was just a bad night, and everything would return to normal as soon as I am with James again.
But the moment Kristie opened the door, the unease resurfaced.
“What do you want here, Tilda?” she sneered.
I frowned. “Kristie, why are you here so early?”
She scoffed. “You reeked of alcohol, Tilda, return back to where you came from.”
“Oh, Kristie, I think something is messing with my head,” I confided in her, my eyes probing for James. I was supposed to be the perfect wife, how did I get drunk and find myself on the bed of a stranger? “Where is my husband?”
“You returned, Tilda.” James appeared at the top of the staircase, dressed in pajamas, a cigarette dangling between his fingers.
“We thought you will never do.” He sounded indifferent as he made his way down the stairs.
I felt an instant relief by his presence. “James, I don’t know what happened, nothing seems to be making sense anymore.”
I rushed towards him, but Kristie stepped forwards, wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Kristie,” I stuttered, glaring at her. She jokes too much, and so I turned to James. “I can explain everything, James. This morning...”
James cut in. “It will all make sense soon, Tilda.” He exhaled a puff of smoke.
“I swear I don’t know, I woke up and... and,” I hesitated.
As much as I tried, last night remained a hazy blur. My stomach twisted. “This isn’t real. It’s all in my dream. Soon I will wake and it will be alright.”
“You want to know what’s real,” Kristie chuckled, placing her hand on her stomach. Her eyes gleaming with triumph. “I’m pregnant. James and I are having a baby,” she announced.
“Kristie,” my voice suddenly became hoarse. “He is... my husband...”
James scoffed, glaring at me with revulsion. “It has always been your fault, Tilda. All these years you kept me childless. I have Kristie now.”
I held my head, it was pounding fast. Memories from last night, the ones I had been desperate to escape, came flooding in. I had seen them, James and Kristie, on this couch, making love. I got myself drunk as a result.
Then the stranger from last night, he too was real. Who was he and how did he know so much about me?
Tears flowed freely.
“Yes Tilda, no one wants a barren woman. Real women like me should have the men,” Kristie ridiculed me.
In my desperation, I reached for James, grabbing his hand. “But I went to the doctor yesterday, James. We can fix this and I will carry your child. I was going to give you the news. The IVF this time is with guaranteed result. You don’t have to wait anymore.”
“You’ve got your chance, Tilda. Now I don’t want you no more. Leave and never come back,” James pushed me hard, sending me crushing on the floor.
I recoiled in fear, scared of what he might do next. Nevertheless, as tears blurred my vision, I begged earnestly. “I got nowhere, Please don’t send me away, James.”
“No one wants you, Tilda,” Kristie spat. “Leave you pathetic fool.”
I scrambled to my feet. “I did everything for you, James. I can do more. Please don’t do this.”
He looked away like I wasn’t even there.
The intensity of my desperation increased. “We can fix this and pretend it never happened. I know you are disappointed in me, but this time will be different.”
A slow smirk curled on his lips. “We are already divorced, stupid. You signed the papers.”
James was in charge of everything I owned, and all along, I signed whatever document he brings without a second glance. He tricked me.
My blood turned cold. “No, I didn’t...” the words caught in my throat.
Kristie tossed a stack of papers at me. “Here,” she said smugly. “Your divorce papers. You don’t belong here anymore.”
I trembled as I unfolded them, my eyes darting across the words. It was real, and James had taken everything.
My world shattered.
A choked sob escaped my lips as darkness closed in. The last thing I heard before everything faded was Kristie’s victorious laughter.
And then, I collapsed.
TILDAI stopped by the door the moment I saw Lady Sheila seated in Oscar’s office.“You can come in, Tilda,” Oscar called out, not even glancing in my direction.“Actually, sir…” I began nervously.Lady Sheila cut in before I could finish. “Is she still here, Oscar? You should have fired her already.”Oscar flicked a quick glance at me, fuddling with the pen in his hand.“I can come back later, Mr. Gray,” I said, trying to excuse myself.“No,” his voice cut in, firm and clear. “You should leave.”I paused, confused. “I... I should?” I stuttered. He nodded, eyes returning to his desk. “Aunt Sheila, you can go now. I must focus on work.”Lady Sheila scoffed, rising slowly from her seat. “Hmph… You can’t possibly have her here after what you found out.”When Oscar didn’t respond, she slammed her fist on the desk. “Oscar! I am speaking to you.”To my surprise, Oscar stood and calmly took her by the arm.“I won’t appreciate any more interference in my work, Aunt,” he said as he led her tow
THIRD PERSONLady Sheila had barged in so suddenly that neither Tilda nor anyone else had time to react. The kids, who had been taken by surprise, looked helpless in her grip. Tilda had been about to announce them as hers before Sheila interrupted. Now, they weren’t sure whether to react or wait for Tilda to.When Tilda could finally muster her voice, she mumbled, “Aunt Sheila.”She wanted to give the news, but Lady Sheila’s sudden arrival had disrupted her plan. She was utterly confused and didn’t know what to do.Lady Sheila grunted. “You cannot use them to get to Oscar. I can see right through your scheme.”Oscar stood up. “You shouldn’t interrupt us that way, Aunt.”Lady Sheila retorted, “You are all blinded by her, but I am not. She’s only using the kids to get to you. I stopped her the first time—now she’s doing it again. Who knows what she’s up to?” She turned to Tilda. “These are kids, Tilda. It is shameful to use them for your hideous motive.”“That is not true,” Tilda counte
TILDAWith uncertainty, I leaned on the door as I watched Miranda get the kids dressed to leave for Monsieur King’s estate. It was today—I would have to reveal everything to Oscar today, even the fact that I wasn’t sure of the kids’ real father. He might think low of me or even push me away, but I wasn’t going to continue living these lies anymore.“Won’t you be there, Mommy? You aren’t dressed yet?” Dixon asked.“Oh,” Dylan stared at his phone. “Mr. Gray says he will come to pick us,” he announced.“No!” My heart skipped a beat. He couldn’t find out just yet. I already had my plans on how to go about it.“Are you changing your mind now, Mommy? We can cancel,” Dixon said.“Yes, Tilda, if you don’t want this yet, we would understand,” Miranda agreed.“No, I mean to... to tell Mr. Gray not to come over,” I stuttered.Their curious eyes turned to me, none saying anything.“Um, just tell him you’re already out and will find your way to the estate,” I explained. “He shouldn’t know you live
TILDAThe soft knock on the door jolted me awake. As I turned over, the memories of the night before began to slowly creep in, wrapping around me like a fog I hadn’t asked for. Then I saw him—Oscar—sleeping peacefully beside me, his arm draped across the sheets like he belonged there.I gasped.Oscar? He had spent the night here. Oh my God… I actually let him in.What about the kids? Had they seen him? They’d made it very clear that they didn’t want any man near me. How on earth would I explain this?Worse… I hadn’t even locked the door. The knock came again, this time softer, more cautious. Panic welled up in my chest. I quickly did the sign of the cross and tiptoed out of bed like a thief sneaking from a crime scene. Was it one of the kids? Were they still home? What would I do if Oscar saw them? I wasn’t ready to let out my secret yet. I could barely process it myself.Peeking through the door, I sighed in relief—it was Miranda. But still, Oscar couldn’t see her.She grabbed my han
TILDABack at my house, we stayed in the car and continued sipping the drinks we brought along, careful not to get drunk since I was the one driving. They tasted so good, we couldn’t seem to get enough. I couldn’t help but wonder what the locals used to make their drinks so rich and flavorful. It wasn’t until I felt the buzz of near-drunkenness that I finally mustered the courage to speak to Oscar.“Can I ask a favour?” I began.I knew that I shouldn’t be doing this, but with what the alcohol had done to my system, I couldn’t care less. It was the only thing that mattered to my daughter, Diamond, at this point.“What is it, dear?” he asked, his eyes desperately searching through mine. “You know you can ask me for anything.”Without hesitation, I went straight to the point. “Can you return James’ property? Life has become too hard for them since you took away everything.”“Pardon?” he stared at me, suspicion creeping into his voice. “Is it the drink? Have you had too much already?”I g
OSCAR GRAY“Very well, Mr. Governor. This is awesome news. I will be at the State House first thing tomorrow to sign the necessary documents,” I said over the phone.Getting off the phone with the governor, I immediately sent Tilda a message:Get ready in an hour, love. I have news for you. And yes, no questions until we see.Her response came in less than a minute:Alright, darling. Send the location or should I come over to the house?I replied: Give me a moment. This was very important to me. O. Gray Future Corporation had won the bidding for the Houston State Project, and it was all thanks to Tilda. That was what the governor had called to inform me about. And to top it off, the state would release fifty percent of the startup funds before the project even begins. This was completely unheard of.There was no better person to share this good news with than Tilda. We must both celebrate this tremendous achievement. For the occasion, I picked something formal to wear to make things f
