Selena’s POV

I couldn’t relax or eat for the rest of that day, the images of Rain’s face twisted in pain permanently imprinted on my mind. All day I kept my eyes on the hospital door. With every step I heard my heart jump, expecting him to walk through it.

But it was never him...

Hell, at one point I even grew so bold I went up to the guards outside and asked about him. They seemed kind enough, one of them even offering to sit and chat for a while if I was bored. But I didn’t dare to trust them, so I quickly excused myself and locked the door.

At night, I twisted and turned in my bed, unable to stop thinking about what had happened. Was he hurt? Why was he in pain? I tried to think about the reasons, but werewolves didn’t get sick like that. Their immune system fought off most infections and colds within hours, and they could as easily digest raw meat as fruits and veggies.

So what had happened to him?

  • Surrogate to the Blood Alpha   Chapter 101: What it Means to Be a Werewolf

Rain’s POVPain raced through my body, making my vision swim with darkness that threatened to take me under. I couldn’t afford that. Not just when I’d been challenged! But I couldn’t move...The pain was too intense, and moving even an inch felt like a Herculean task. My heart felt like it had been ripped out of my chest, my ribs a gaping hole. I’d been tortured in the past, but no pain I’d experienced before came close to this! As if someone had set my insides on fire or flayed my soul…A shadow moved over me, and I remembered that Thor had challenged me. That he’d been the one who shot my fated mate and caused this pain. Well, fuck me, but I suddenly understood why rejections were something that killed wolves. I hated that bitch and our bond had never fully formed. And I still felt like dying!I tried to get my body to move. To do something so I didn’t just si

  • Surrogate to the Blood Alpha   Chapter 100: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Selena’s POV“By the look right there, I’m guessing he didn’t tell you?” Sean asked, his voice tinged with sympathy. I shook my head, closing my eyes and forcing a calm I didn’t feel. No, Stella was right! This was better…As long as there was life, there was hope!If Rain was captured, at least we had time to find and rescue him. He’d survived torture and pain before; he would live through it again.Or he'd better! If he didn’t, I’d have Stella resurrect him so I could kill him myself! Why the hell hadn’t he told me about Katie?!Groaning, as my body was still recovering from the pain – and no, I was pushing aside the question: “how am I feeling his pain when we haven’t even claimed each other?” out of my mind for now – I tried to take a deep breath and get my body to cooperate with me again. Why?Why hadn’t he told me?Another kind of pa

  • Surrogate to the Blood Alpha   Chapter 99: Fall Out

Selena’s POVThe sudden pain in my chest had me doubling over, gasping for air. The glass in my hand crashed to the floor as the pain spread like barbed wire coiling around my body. My heart felt like it had exploded in my chest, tearing a scream from my throat.I heard Stella and Sean call my name. Through blurry eyes, I could see Clyde jump from his seat and rush towards me. His young face was too worried, stretched in horror, which I felt was so unfair for someone that young...And then--- it all went black!I woke up, drowsy and feeling like someone had run through a meat grinder. Seeing the white ceiling and being surrounded by the equipment that Rain had brought in for my pregnancy and delivery, I knew I was in the infirmary. My whole body still ached, and my chest felt sore. Just breathing felt like a Herculean task, and moving--- yeah! That was out of the question! My muscles felt like they were made of lead and were unwilling to cooperate. Hell, it felt like I’d run a maratho

  • Surrogate to the Blood Alpha   Chapter 98: The Challenge

Rain’s POV“You’re unfit to be king!”My wolf huffed, not even remotely insulted.Hmm, I’d heard worse…But since I was being challenged, we turned to face the man, letting go of the dead wolf still stuck between my teeth. And to my absolutely NOT surprise, I also recognized the man coming towards me.“Thor Gilort,” I sighed, walking towards him with a smirk on my face. “I figured you’d be here somewhere.”It was Katie’s uncle!“So you do remember me,” he growled--- and for some reason that gave him a fucking ego boost, as he struggled to hide his grin. Well, of course I remembered!I wasn’t fucking five...The man was still in his prime, and as for alpha wolves went, he wasn’t bad looking. Tall, broad shoulders and big arms. But physic alone didn’t an alpha make, and

  • Surrogate to the Blood Alpha   Chapter 97: It Begins!

Rain’s POVI uselessly tried to stifle an annoyed groan as I watched the alphas next to me nervously shift from foot to foot. Sure, the army in front of us was a frightening sight. There were hundreds of them, maybe more. They moved in tight, coordinated ranks—some in wolf form, some in their human form. Hell, if I wasn’t mistaken, there were even some rogues among their ranks. And all of them were armed to the teeth and hungry for chaos. So I could understand the alphas fear...But what they and my enemies didn’t know was that this war was doomed from the very beginning!“Is everything in place?” I asked Elijah, knowing that my beta had been working hard – between sporadically fucking his mate’s brain out.“Everything is as you ordered, My King,” he replied, going for a formal tone in the presence of all our allies. I appreciated it, since structure and the hierarchy were

  • Surrogate to the Blood Alpha   Chapter 96: One More Secret

Selena’s POVJoey picked up Alisa’s bag and, with a gentle hand, guided her inside the house. I let out a sigh, happy that that was over with. However, I also made a mental note to have some guidelines in place for situations like these. If the pack consisted mostly of weak wolves, humans, and omegas, there was a chance that they wouldn’t have the traditional reactions to meeting their mates as normal wolves…Sigh!Suddenly, Rain’s hand landed on my lower back, massaging it and easing some of the tension. Hell, I nearly groaned out loud from the relief. Being small and pregnant wasn’t as fun as the books made it out to be...With a gasp, I was suddenly pulled inside, just as two more huge SUVs showed up, and huge, domineering wolves piled out. Some of them, I recognized as Rain’s most trusted men…I cursed under my breath, quickly looking for the talisman that Stella had gi
