“Hailey!” Maya's angry voice called, her fast footsteps thudding towards Hailey's room. What did she do this time? Who has she wronged so early in the morning? The girl wondered, fear covering her.

“Yes, ma!” She answered, her gaze downcasted, her nose twitched, waiting for that resounding slap.

“You ugly thing!” Her mother spat. “Are you on night shift today?”

“N-no, mother, I'll be on morning shift for the next three days.” Hailey replied, her fingers trembling, her face still waiting for that slap.

“I see,” Maya nodded. “Don't come back home for the next three days, I don't want to see your ugly face around here.” Hailey's heart skipped a beat. No, she wasn't surprised, she had gotten used to being punished terribly, but what was she getting punished for?

“W-why mother?” She asked, her eyes pooling with tears.

“Were you deaf when I said it? I don't want your ugly scarred face here! The new Alpha King is coming and I don't want him to know I have a disgusting child in my household! Your sister is more than enough for the man's eyes.”

Hailey shook her head profusely. Her mother's anger frightened her. She would often agree to whatever she wanted and accepted every insult thrown at her without defending herself just so she wouldn't carry on reminding her the reason she was unwanted.

“If you come back home I will punish you badly! I will make sure you won't be able to move for months.” She threatened, wagging her finger in Hailey's face.

Hailey gulped back pain, restraining herself from breaking into tears. “I- I- will never disobey you, mother!” She stuttered, her heart aching with pain. She hated how she had to submit to the harsh treatments and insults, what made it worse was the fact that it would never end, just like it began ages ago.

“You better don't try it, such an unfortunate girl! The Alpha's eyes don't deserve to see you! If under any circumstances you come back home I will cut your hair and make you walk on hot coal” She continued to threaten the poor girl.

“I will never go against your wishes, mother.” her soft voice said, tears rolling down her innocent eyes. She tried to restrain herself from sobbing in front of her mother, she wouldn't dare do that for it would only worsen her anger.

Gossip filled the town about the Alpha's visit. The Alpha's and Beta's daughter's, especially Hailey's elder sister, Victoria , have been excited, growing impatient waiting for the Alpha King to come, they were informed that the Alpha King was coming to choose a mate for himself and a Queen for the kingdom.

It was surprising that the new Alpha King, who was remarkably handsome and fortunate, had not found his mate even after touring several other packs, when he was told about the Moonlight Pack which was reported for having the prettiest and elegant girls, he decided to try his luck; it had been very difficult for him to choose his mate. This was a big deal for Maya, she had always wanted her daughter to be claimed by an Alpha King and she would not allow anything to ruin that.

“I will chain you up and release the dogs for you! These ugly scars will worsen. I promise to make sure of that if you take a single step into this house!”

Hailey continued to shake her head in fear, agreeing to everything she said. She feared her more than anything and the more she berated her, the more she feared what she would do to her.

Maya banged the door shut before leaving.

Hailey didn't let herself tear up, she wasted no time to leave the house. The moment she arrived at the hospital's parking lot she broke into bitter tears, she hugged her knees, sobbing loudly. This time around she didn't clamp her mouth shut. She allowed herself to let it out, no one would hear her, no one would come there and see her so she cried to her heart's content until she fell asleep.

It was something she was used to. It was like a ritual, she would always cry so much every night so she could sleep. Her sister often woke her up by pouring chilling water on her or slapping her awake, this time it was the sound of exotic rides pulling into the parking lot that jolted her awake.

She hid herself so no one would see her. Her eyes widened in disbelief, they must be influential persons, if not royalty, but what were they doing at the hospital?

Suddenly, her phone rang. It was a call from the senior doctor, Mr. Jack Jackson. “Hailey,” his voice was firm and bossy as always. “Where the fuck are you, do I have to beg you to come early to work now?”

“I-I'm-I'm sorry sir, I'm around.” She stuttered.

“Get here as soon as possible, we have a very important patient and the hospital is full, we need extra hands.”

“Right away sir,” she said before hanging up. “Oh no,” she exclaimed when she saw her reflection in the mirror, her eyes were red and puffy. She needed to clean her tear stained face first. She watched as the people she assumed were royalty hastily walked into the private elevator. She quickly dropped down from her ride, wiping her face with the wet wipes.

She walked hastily, fearing that she had offended the doctor, she was three hours late for work and she hoped he wouldn't remind her of how slow and lazy she was and that the only reason she still worked in the hospital as a doctor was because of her father was the former Beta. She didn't blame him for that, he was right, how could a person who feared blood and needles possibly work in a hospital, that too as a doctor?

“I don't just understand why they made you a doctor!” Jackson barked. He was enraged, making fear cover her, but he knew this was the wrong time to berate the girl, she was always fearful, berating her now would make her slow and tearful, so he had to save that for later.

“I-I'm-I'm sorry sir, … I can explain.” She said, cowering.

“Pull yourself together and stop acting like a slug! The new Alpha King is here and I need you to take care of him!” he said, making her heart skip a beat, and she drew back with a gasp.

“No, I can't let him see me.”
