Ava’s POV
“Pretty, just 20 minutes more, pleasssse,” Bob said, flashing me one of her carefree look and handing out a candy sweet to me.
I glared at her. “I don’t want that,” I snapped, brushing her hand away.
But Bob, being stubborn, shoved the sweet into my crossbody bag, kissed my cheek quickly, and ran right back to her game.
I felt frustrated, angrily reached into my bag to pull out the sweet, ready to throw it at her, but my fingers brushed something unexpected. My heart skipped a beat. I grabbed it and pulled it out—my old cell phone.
I gasped softly. “Wow, so you’ve been here all along,” I muttered, staring at the phone in disbelief. “Guess I’ll play with you for the next silly 20 minutes,” I added with a weak laugh.
I pressed the power button, but it didn’t turn on. Come on, don’t do this to me, I thought. “Please, just work,” I whispered, prayed, and pressed the button again.
