Poison

Poison

Hadley has spent most of her life being loved by the Royal Pack. Orphaned young and raised beneath the protection of the Alpha King and Luna Queen, she grew up inside the palace alongside their son, Killian. She may be wolfless, and she may not have royal blood, but to the people who matter, she has always been family. Until Killian comes home. One night Hadley can’t remember leaves her waking in his bed at three-thirty in the morning. By breakfast, Killian has found his mate. Her best friend, Avery. And then Hadley’s world begins to change. Memories no longer fit. Friends turn cold. Accidents become accusations. Evidence appears where it shouldn’t, and the boy who once protected her begins looking at her like she’s something he needs to protect everyone else from. Then Avery’s wolf begins to die. When every piece of evidence points to Hadley, suspicion becomes certainty—and the only family she has ever known becomes the one thing she may not survive. But Hadley does survive. Six years later, she has a new life, a new name, and two children the Royal Pack knows nothing about. She has no intention of ever going home. Until she no longer has a choice. The palace hasn’t forgotten her. Neither has Killian. And his wolf recognizes something in Hadley’s children that Killian can’t explain. Six years ago, someone poisoned a wolf. But the real target was always the truth.

Chapter: Chapter Five
HadleyBy four that afternoon, Avery had been medically retired from nearly every activity known to wolves.According to Killian she shouldn’t train, carry anything heavier than a cup, drive, open doors with her injured hand, or exist more than six feet from him without supervision.According to Avery, she had strained her wrist.I was inclined to agree with Avery.I was sitting cross-legged near the foot of my bed with the sketchbook against my thighs when my door opened without so much as a knock.“Come in,” I said.“Thanks.”“Any time.”She kicked it shut behind her and dropped onto my bed hard enough to bounce me.“Careful. You’ll strain the other one.”“Don’t even joke. He’ll put me in a bubble.”“Your mate loves you.”“My mate is insane

Chapter: Chapter Four
HadleyBy Monday morning I’d upgraded from hurt to angry.Much more useful.Hurt had kept me awake most of Sunday night replaying things in fragments I couldn’t do anything with. His face. The way he’d looked at me before he said it, like he’d finally worked out what I was.Whore.Angry got me out of bed.I shoved my hair up into a ponytail, pulled open the drawer where I kept my training gear, and reached for the lavender set I’d worn a hundred times. My hand stopped. It stopped on its own, before I’d thought anything at all, and I stood there with my fingers an inch off the fabric and understood what was happening to me.The sports bra and shorts were nothing. They were comfortable, they’d been washed so many times the waistband had gone pale, and I had trained in them in front of half this pack since I was sixteen without one single th

Chapter: Chapter Three
Hadley I managed almost three hours. Or I passed out. There was probably a medical distinction between the two and I didn’t care enough to work out which one applied to me. When I woke, the sunlight had crept halfway across the bedroom floor and the headache had faded from *someone is removing my brain through my eye sockets* down to a dull throb I could ignore as long as I didn’t turn my head too fast. I stayed in bed anyway. Not because I was tired. I just didn’t want to go downstairs. Which was ridiculous, and I knew it was ridiculous while I was doing it. This was my house. I had spent my entire life wandering it barefoot, stealing food out of the kitchens, irritating people who technically outranked me badly enough that they could have had me removed from a room if Uncle Alaric hadn’t always found it funny. One bad morning shouldn’t have changed the shape of a building. Except every time I thought about going down, I heard him again. Don’t fucking touch me. I rolled ont

Chapter: Chapter Two
Hadley I woke at nine with one arm hanging off the side of the bed and the mug still sitting on my nightstand. For a while I didn’t move. The headache had settled in behind my right eye and made itself comfortable, and the light coming through the curtains seemed personally offended that I was still alive, and there was a sour ring dried into the bottom of the mug where the last of the tea had sat. I’d made a promise at some point in the night that I was never drinking again. I’d made it once before, after Maddox convinced me that mixing three different kinds of alcohol was fine because they were all technically clear. I hadn’t listened to myself then either. This time I meant it. I sat up slowly and reached for the mug so I could take it down with me. The note was under it. Folded once, in Avery’s handwriting, her ridiculous looping A at the bottom of it. Drink this. All of it. And stop thinking before you hurt yourself. Love you, idiot. — A I read it twice. Then I sat on t

Chapter: Chapter One
Hadley The headache got there first. It sat behind my eyes like something with weight to it, something that had been put there rather than grown, and for a while I didn’t move. Just breathed through my nose and did the math on how many drinks it would have taken to feel like this. Whatever the number was, I’d clearly hit it and kept going. I rolled onto my side. Wrong move. The room tipped hard enough that I shoved my face into the pillow and stayed there with my eyes shut, waiting for my stomach to give up on climbing out through my throat. The pillow smelled wrong. That took longer to land than it should have. My sheets smelled like the lavender detergent Aunt Elara made the laundry staff use, because nothing in this palace was permitted to just smell like fabric. This smelled like cedar. Woodsmoke. Something underneath both of those that was unmistakably, infuriatingly male. And underneath that, faint, hours old and warm from skin — cinnamon and cognac and vanilla. Me. I’ve
