I stumbled through the fire, covering my face with my cloak as I looked for the clearing that Lady Bluebird had mentioned. She had been telling the truth about the fire, which means she must be telling the truth about where she had left Raven. The chain clinked as he pulled it, forcing my arms high above my head by the cuffs around my wrists until I was dangling before securing it to the wall. He looked over my body, and I felt naked even though I was completely clothed, just as before. He had pulled off his helmet and armor, leaving him in only what knights called underclothes in this century. Scars covered every inch of his exposed skin, even crawling up his neck and along his jawline. This commander’s story is a bit dark. He is actually the bastard child of the king, born from his affair with a maid. To cover up his affair, he sent the one-month-old child to be raised by his soldiers. Those soldiers, hating the tyrannical king, beat the child to the brink of death almost every day while also starving him, calling it training. As I turned away from my brother, I hoped that whatever was happening to that plot didn’t change it too much because she would kick our asses. ******I struggled with the binding that held me, but even if I got close to getting them off, a bump would knock them out of my hands. After the eighth time it happened, I decided to just focus on not ending up completely black and blue by the time I ended up at the castle. Which was hard since this asshole was dragging me behind his horse. Again, I was so going to kick his ass. I had thought that the Prince was the new one, but it was obvious that he was the commander. A character that I didn’t even know still existed in this book, so I never thought anyone could be him. I have to admit, though, he’s good at what he does. Not once, even when we were alone, did he step out of character. If he were just a regular character, then that would have inspired doubt. When I reached the clearing, the soldiers were about to light the fire, but before they could, I was across the clearing pressing a knife to the soldier’s throat.“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” “Shouldn’t I be telling you that?” A dark voice spoke up.My eyes snapped towards the soldier who spoke. He looked just like every other soldier standing around me, with the same armor, but his presence was completely different. It was commanding and dark, sending an unwelcome shiver of fear down my spine. Still, I held my place and even pressed the knife deeper into the soldier’s throat at his words. “Don’t think I won’t do it.” “Oh, but I know you won’t do it, little Raven. You have never taken a life because you believe even the most wicked person can be saved. Of course, if this isn’t true, then prove me wrong by slicing his throat.”I gritted my teeth, pissed the fuck off because he was completely right. I didn’t respond to her, knowing exactly how I looked. I looked like someone who had never scaled a tree in her life, and if I stayed like this, then the fake concern in her voice would turn into suspicion. I spared a glance down at her and almost instantly regretted it. I had scaled to the top of the tree before remembering my old fear of heights, and I was more than twenty feet off the ground. I did get a quick glance at Lady Bluebird when I glanced briefly down, and suspicion was definitely blooming on her face. Knowing I couldn’t stay like this much longer, I gripped onto the muscle memory that I had felt earlier before closing my eyes and just jumping. Part of me, despite being in a character that has done this thousands of times that she could easily do it with her eyes closed, I still felt like I was going to fall.
