LOGIN“What are you doing here, Kane?”
“Kane?” My father laughed, a gravelly sound that smelled of stale nicotine. “Are we on a first-name basis now?”
“What. Are. You. Doing. Here?”
His brow twitched and his features morphed into his usual smug look. “Maybe you should tighten your security if you want to continue keeping me away.”
“Quit fucking around and tell me what you want!” I roared, the pulse hammering against my temples. “It’s always one thing or another with you. What is it this time?”
“Mmm… my little boy grows more feisty every time I see him.” He retrieved a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his jacket. He flicked the flame, popping a stick between his lips, charring the paper, and dragging a lungful of smoke deep into his chest. “I already told you. I’m here to meet my daughter-in-law.”
My chest shook, my hands growing clammy. I blinked, trying to steady myself before speaking. “I’m not married, Kane.”
“Yeah? But recently you’ve been photographed a lot with this beautiful girl.” He exhaled a gray cloud into the cold air. “Are you not planning to marry her?”
“Marriage is taking it too far.”
“So why flaunt her around?”
“You have something to say, Kane? Go ahead and say it.”
Before the words could even settle, my father’s hand swept across my face. The slap crackled through the driveway, sending me stumbling backwards. I couldn’t even make a full step back when he gripped my face, his calloused fingers digging into my cheeks.
“You disrespectful little fucker,” he hissed, his face inches from mine, his breath hot and sour. “What did I say about talking back to me?”
My breathing came in sharp, shallow heaves. I didn’t bother struggling to break his hold. This was a pattern. My father’s face wasn’t one I saw often, but whenever he showed up, destruction followed.
“Get the fuck off my property before I get the cops to take you in, Kane,” I gritted through clenched teeth. I winced as his blunt fingernails dug into my skin so hard that I was certain it’d leave bruises.
He landed another heavy slap against my cheek, shaking my head back. “Where is she, huh?” Slap! “Where are you hiding the bitch who thinks she can leech off my son’s money?”
A breathless laughter suddenly bubbled up my throat. My chest quaked with the sound, and I bared my teeth into a rigid grin.
“This is what it’s about, hm?” I mused, rolling my tongue over my bottom lip. “Money. My money?”
“Listen here, boy, you’ve where you are today because I allow it! Me! This flashy house,” he looked around, gesturing to my property, “the flashy cars, and everything you get to enjoy is all thanks to me! So everything you think you have is all mine! Don’t even think about settling down and making a family of your own. I will not share!”
In that single second, that fragile string holding my mind together snapped. The gravity of the situation crashed over me.
The venomous words Gabrielle had thrown at me just minutes ago—telling me I was a manipulative user, that she was ashamed of me—collided with my father’s screaming voice.
The rejection and the violence fused into a single, agonizing weight.
I lost my grip, my mind fracturing under the pressure.
Tears pricked my eyes and started pouring down my face, mixing with the sweat on my skin as the overwhelm took over.
“You’re truly shameless,” I murmured.
“What did you just say to me?”
“Your money?” I snorted out a bitter, wet laugh. “And you wonder why I refuse to take on your name.”
“Hey—”
“My name is Kayden Alvarez! I took my mother’s last name because if there’s anyone who deserves credit for my success, it’s her! But you killed her, didn’t you? You turned your back on your family and chose to live like a fool! Your money?” I snickered, aggressively wiping the tears from my face with the back of my arm. “You mean my money that you beg for on your knees like a dog!”
The smirk vanished from his face, leaving his features dark and lethal. “Is that how it is?”
“Oh, yes, that’s exactly how it is!” I shouted, matching his fire. “If I choose to marry, I’ll do so! I’ll fall in love with a woman of my choosing, marry the fuck out of her, and show her the beautiful things in this life! And that is something you will never be able to achieve!”
My father went dead silent. He dropped his cigarette, twisting his boot over the embers to crush it into the ground. A devilish smirk curved his mouth back out.
“If you say so, son.” He chuckled, the sound quiet, almost lost to the air. And it made my skin crawl. “But first, let’s see how you continue to have more success.”
Before my brain could process the movement, he charged. He hit me hard, tackling my body down onto the hard stones of the driveway.
My driver bolted out of the SUV, rushing toward the scuffle. I threw a hand up, stopping him in his tracks.
This was regular business. This wasn’t the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last. I wanted my father to take his anger out on me as long as he wanted.
If he was hitting me, he wasn’t looking for the door.
It was okay.
It was normal.
I was okay.
No one ever died from getting hit by their father every once in a while.
He scrambled up, reaching into the open trunk of my car, and pulled out my spare hockey stick. He swung it down, targeting my ribs with heavy, dull impacts, hurling insults at me with every strike.
It was still okay.
Just a dull, familiar ache.
The physical pain was easier to manage than the thoughts inside my head.
It could have been all right. I could have taken it until he got tired.
But then the heavy click of the front door echoed through the yard. The frantic sound of Gabrielle’s footsteps tore across the air, running straight into the chaos.
Her voice vibrated across the compound.
“Stay away from him, you asshole!”
Since I had been working with Kayden for six months, I had never once seen him deliriously drunk. Not once.I had seen him tipsy. I had seen him hungover. I had seen him drink enough to become louder than usual at parties and cockier than usual around women. But I had never seen him like this. And honestly? It wasn’t a terrible sight. The man was a dramatic drunk. He talked a lot. He moved a lot. And, dare I say, he was the cutest when he was drunk.Well… That was until everything began falling apart.“Oh, God.” I tightened my grip around his waist as he stumbled beside me, nearly taking us both into the wall of the elevator. “Kayden.”“I’m fine,” he slurred. “Yeah? Well, that’s all thanks to me,” I replied, holding him tightly.“I was trying to avoid the wall,” he said. I stared at him. He stared back at me with the most serious expression I’d ever seen on his face. “I was.”“Of course you were.”The elevator doors slid shut behind us, trapping us inside the small, mirrored space.K
Kayden came to a fucking club.So naturally, as both his handler and his supposed girlfriend, I had to come after him.It was literally my job to babysit him, and he was making sure I put in the work.By the time I stepped into the club, I was furious. God, I was so fucking furious that putting it into words would just be a disservice to myself. The music was loud enough to vibrate through my chest, the bass pulsing beneath my feet as bodies moved around me in a blur of expensive clothes, flashing lights, and alcohol. Colored lights swept across the room, illuminating faces for half a second before plunging them back into darkness.I hated everything about this place. But mostly, I hated that I had come looking for one particular idiot, who I spotted almost immediately.Kayden was impossible to miss.He was sprawled across a booth near the back of the club, a bottle in one hand and a woman pressed so close to his side that there was barely enough space between them for air.Another wo
“I wasn’t cleared.”Silence.Coach stared at me as if he couldn’t decide whether to yell or simply walk away. “You weren’t cleared to play?”“I never said I was.”“Then why the hell were you on that ice?”I looked down at my hands.Because I didn’t know.Because sitting still with my thoughts had become unbearable.Because lying in that penthouse with Gabrielle beside me would’ve been worse.Because every time I closed my eyes, I heard her voice.I’m ashamed to be associated with you.Maybe I’d wanted the pain.Maybe I needed something loud enough to drown out everything else. But I wasn’t about to say any of that.So I looked back at my coach and answered, “Because there was a game and I wanted to play it.”The man had a look of disbelief on his face before, but it deepened even further. “That’s your excuse?”“It’s not an excuse. I’m explaining why I played.” “You think this is funny, Alvarez? You think you’re untouchable because you’re good?” He pointed at me. “You walk onto that r
What am I doing here? What am I doing here? What am I doing here? The voice in my head buzzed and buzzed and fucking buzzed. My life was a mess. The only thing I had was money, but even that didn’t matter.I was aching—literally and metaphorically. Why was I moving on this ice?Who was I enduring this pain for?My mother? She was long dead. I was sure her carcass wouldn’t care about what I did with my life.My father and the family he abandoned me for?Just so he could get more money from me.Gabrielle?Perhaps.She said she loved watching me on the ice.But in the same breath, she said she was ashamed of me.What was it about me that caused her to be ashamed? Was it my physical appearance? Was it my nonchalance? Was it the crazy things the tabloids wrote about me on a daily basis?Perhaps it was because I inherited my mother’s broken heart. But that wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t my fault that I was born with a broken heart and a mind that often drove me to the edge.It wasn’t my fault.
The air inside the penthouse had become suffocating. It had nothing to do with the temperature. The room was cool enough that I could feel the air-conditioning brushing against my skin every time I moved. But somehow, every breath I took felt thick, as though the oxygen had been replaced with something heavier.Something I had to fight my way through.Kayden and I had barely spoken since the doctor left. And yet, the silence between us was the loudest I'd ever heard.I couldn’t even blame Kayden for it.I had spent the entire day pushing him around.Eat this.Take your medication.Lie down.Don’t go out.Don’t drink.Listen to me.And when he fought me, I’d fought harder.Everything I had done had been for his own good. I knew that. I could justify every decision I’d made if I had to.But that didn’t mean I hadn’t been difficult. And maybe that was why I couldn’t stop thinking about the way he’d looked at me earlier.Like he couldn’t understand me.Honestly, I couldn’t understand myse
“Good news,” the doctor said, closing the medical bag at her feet. “It’s not broken.”The breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding escaped me.“But he’s so heavily bruised that I’m tempted to ask what happened.” Her eyes flicked briefly toward the bedroom. “But because my discretion was requested, I’ll not ask.”I gave her a grateful smile. “Thank you.”“I also want to advise against playing tomorrow.” She smiled back at me. “But Mr. Alvarez doesn’t exactly look like a man who can be reasoned with.”A reluctant smile tugged at my lips. That was one way to put it.“So, in the end, I can only provide the best treatment I can in such a short amount of time and hope for the best outcome.” She picked up the small tube of ointment she’d prescribed and handed it to me. “Make sure he takes the painkillers. And massage his ribs with the ointment every hour.”“Okay.” I nodded. “Got it.”“And make sure he gets enough rest. It’ll help his body heal itself at least.”“Alright.” I nodded again, me
