Wren reached over and placed his hand on Lindsay’s back. She could barely feel his touch through her ballistic vest under her uniform shirt. She knew he was trying to make her feel better about what had happened over the past week. It was not working.

Wren took a deep breath before he asked John, “Did Aaron White talk to you about any of this?”

“Never,” John answered, shaking his head. “I rarely even saw him. Our times at the base did not overlap very long. He did ask me a few specific questi

“Agent Gold, Sheriff Gold,” Randy said with a little nod as he looked at the creature on the ground.“Randy,” Lindsay replied with a little smile. “Do you need help with the cage, or can you handle bringing it over by yourself?” Wren asked him.Randy answered, “I can get it, sir. I’ll be right back.” Randy turned and went back to the van. He opened the back and soon came back with a collapsible cage. He set it on the ground beside Lindsay and quickly had it ready for the creature.Just as Wren began to reach for the creature on the ground in front of him, a long, low call came from the woods at the edge of the yard. He looked at Lindsay. She was staring toward the trees and the sound.“He is waiting for his apples, isn’t he?” Wren asked her.“Maybe, but I think he’s probably upset because of this thing,” she answered, nodding toward the creature on the ground.“You feed it?” Randy asked her, sounding shocked.“I leave him a couple of apples every night. I am not his only source of f

Lindsay had been holding the tranquilizer gun at the ready. She quickly and carefully made the shot, striking the creature in the shoulder with the dart. Lindsay picked up another dart and reloaded the gun. She aimed it and readied for the second shot if it was needed. It was almost to the fence when it began to stagger. When it reached the fence, it placed a paw on the wire, and Lindsay shot it with the second dart. Within seconds, it fell into a heap in the field.Lindsay raised her head from the scope and looked at the others. Wren was still holding the binoculars and seemed unconcerned about what had just happened. Andy and Annie were another story. They had both drawn their weapons and had been ready to start shooting the creature if it had made its way through the fence.“You two can put those away now,” Lindsay told Andy and Annie. They both hesitated before putting their guns back in their holsters. Andy looked a little pale as he continued to stare at the creature. Annie was

“We need binoculars. This thing has teeth. It has a lot of teeth that popped out of its gums like switchblades. It just ate a mouse, so you may want to watch this thing with me,” Lindsay told him.“Here,” Wren said as he handed her a dart. “If it does anything or tries to go anywhere while I’m inside, knock it out for me.”She smiled and carefully took the dart from him. She held it as she watched him go inside to get what he needed. After the door closed behind him, she slid the dart into the tranquilizer gun and prepared it to fire if necessary. She raised the rifle and began watching the creature through the scope again. As she watched, it calmly moved around the field, chasing butterflies and occasionally eating flowers and other things it found. After a few moments, she heard the door open again and could see Wren out of the corner of her eye. He walked to where she was sitting and placed something on the chair beside her. She looked, saw it was her pistol in its holster, and lo

“Agent Gold,” Wren answered his phone as he stepped onto his front porch to join his wife.“Sir, this is Andy Baxter. Annie and I are on a call not far from your house. A lady said that she saw a green, fur-covered creature in her yard, and it approached her dog as if it were going to attack it,” Andy told him.“Hang on, Andy, and let me pass this on to your boss,” Wren said as Lindsay looked at him.“Is this about a green thing that looks like a weird puppet from a children’s show or something?” Lindsay asked Wren before he could say anything.Wren asked Andy, “Does it look like a puppet of some kind?” “I didn’t see it, sir, but that’s how the lady described it. Do you know what it is?” Andy asked.“No, I don’t,” Wren answered. Wren looked at Lindsay. She pointed into the neighbor’s field that joined their yard. He looked where she was pointing and saw a strange creature covered in what seemed to be green wool. Of all the things he had seen, this was one of the weirdest.“Uh, Andy,

Andy led the way out of the sheriff's department and into the parking lot. Before they got in their patrol cars, he gave Annie the address and told her to follow him to the location. Her response was just a big smile and nodding of her head. He got into his car and pulled out of the parking lot, watching to ensure she followed his instructions. He was thankful that they were in separate cars. He was more able to talk to women than when Sheriff Gold took over, but he still did not like to do it. Annie's constant chatter drove him crazy. He would sometimes go on patrol just to get some peace and quiet.Throughout the drive to the area, he kept looking in his rearview mirror to make sure Annie was still behind him. He was running through all the possible scenarios of what could happen in his head as he drove. One was that the woman who called was hallucinating, and nothing was actually there. Another was much worse: the woman was right, and it would try to eat him and Annie the same way

Annie and Andy had not been on duty long and were both at their desks. Sheriff Gold had left a few minutes after their shift had started. She had made sure they had no questions, and the information between the day and evening shifts was exchanged before she left for the day, the same as she always did. Andy had never asked the sheriff why she did that, even though there was no need. “Andy,” Annie said, startling him. “What?” he answered after jumping slightly.“Do you get the feeling that everyone is trying to hide something from us? I mean, there is already like so much stuff happening, and now Big Bob is taking days off and leaving you in charge of the shift. There’s all of that, and then there are all of those closed-door meetings that the sheriff has and even super-secret meetings that are who knows where. She even leaves Little Bob in charge and just doesn’t show up to work on some days. Don’t you think that we should know about some of these things since we work here and wo

Lindsay looked at the clock on her office wall. It was almost 3:30 in the afternoon, and she was waiting for the evening shift to start arriving. Today was the day that Annie would begin training on the same shift as Andy and Big Bob. She knew Big Bob could handle it, but she was worried about Andy

Lindsay sat in her office, going back over the personnel files, still trying to find a replacement for Keith. She had found two reserve deputies and a new applicant, all of whom would have been good choices. Unfortunately, when Lindsay called them, all three declined, and one of the reserve officer

They put everything in the back of her car and began the drive out to the farm where the cow had been killed. Wren called the farm owner and let him know they were coming back out to have another look. Wren explained they needed to identify what had killed the cow. After that, they were mostly sile

They ate without talking much. Wren was still trying to wrap his head around the number of calls and their variety. Lindsay was still thinking about the little creature she had seen and wondered how much of a danger it might pose to people in the county. As they were eating, there was a knock on th
