It was after 3 a.m. when she and Wren finished going through everything in the box. They sat quietly for a while, trying to grasp what they had read. They both finished their sodas, and Wren stood up.“I'm going to grab a couple of sleeping bags for us. Is there anything else you want me to get for you?” Wren asked.“Only if you have about a pound of chocolate somewhere,” Lindsay answered, stretching.“Look in the backpack,” Wren told her, then walked out of her office. Inside, she found not only chocolate bars but also a box of chocolate cupcakes. She just closed her eyes and laughed as she sat for a moment. As they continued to eat, they watched Cat working over on the floor of Lindsay’s office and what was going on out in the lobby. There had been a call about an alarm going off at a business just outside town. Big Bob took the call and was gone only briefly before returning, having found nothing. They saw Max and Yuri come in for their night shift and looked at the clock, seeing it was only 11 p.m.“They are here early,” Wren said.“They always are. If anyone who works here is ever late and you haven’t heard anything, someone had better check on them because something is wrong,” Lindsay told him. “This is good because Max makes great night shift coffee. It is guaranteed to keep you awake, and if you do fall asleep while drinking it, you need to give up and sleep because nothing will keep you awake.”“Hey, Max,” Lindsay called out to him. He finished reading it, glanced at Cat sitting on the floor on the other side of the office, and turned back to Lindsay.“Just keep reading. He just looked at her, smiled, and shook his head.“You have had these skills here, and you didn’t share that with me?” Wren asked.“You said you wanted them to have as little as possible to do with all of this weirdness, so that is what I have tried to do. Cat takes the calls, so she knows what is coming in. The Bobs and Max are shift supervisors, so they need to know what is going on to keep everyone else who is working safe. Lindsay and Wren went back to where the deputies were sitting and joined them. To their relief, so far, much of the bad weather was going around them, so they weren’t flooded with calls as expected. Most of them were still planning to stay in the department to ensure there was extra help if needed. “Sheriff, would you like me to set up the printer and hard drive on your computer for you while you and Agent Gold get something to eat?” Cat asked just after they had sat down.Lindsay looked at Wren, and he just shrugged his shoulders.“Sure, Cat, go ahead,” Lindsay told her, then watched Cat bounce into her office. The rest of the time they were waiting for the truck, Annie was the only one talking, and it was all to Viktor. Viktor seemed to be delighted with Annie’s constant chatter. Little Bob and Big Bob had moved to the far side of the loading dock, away from them. It was clear they had just about had it with her talking. Lindsay pulled out her phone and checked the time Wren had called. Just as she did, a truck that looked like a large moving truck pulled around and began to back up to the dock. It stopped a few inches away, and Lindsay saw Randy jump out of the cab.“Ma’am,” Randy greeted Lindsay. “Agent Gold told me to pull around here. He is parking in the parking lot out front. Lindsay sat at her desk, holding her cell phone. She hoped they could find an answer to at least a few of their questions. Wren was on his way to her office with boxes of files. She was having a hard time believing there could be as many as Wren had told her, but he had no reason to lie about it.
