Chapter six

Caleb's POV

I sat down in my office, the doors shut against intruders as I stared down at my phone so hard my eyes began to ache.

The latest report was from Daniel, and as it stated, things weren't looking so good.

I held my head in my hands and resisted the urge to break down and bawl my eyes out.

I hadn't cried since I was ten years old when my favorite pet died so I damn well wouldn't cry now.

My people were looking up to me for a solution to end their suffering, but it seemed that every step I took forward, I was taken three steps backwards.

The witch's warning kept on echoing in my head more loudly than before, and this time it wasn't so easy to dismiss.

I needed to get Katherine back.

But I also knew it wouldn't be that easy.

How would she ever willingly accept me when I threw her out on her face…

Sigh.

I used the flat pad of my fingertips to massage my tired eyeballs while I contemplated what to do.

Three rapid-fire raps on my door jerked me out of my thoughts, and I looked up
