Something unthinkable

I believe my withdrawal should be at such a high level that I was even imagining crazy things completely out of touch with reality.

"I'm not feeling well, love," I said to Charlotte, quickly sitting on the bed and leaning against the headboard.

"Are you feeling any pain, Brian?" Charlotte asked, concerned.

She followed my example and sat down too, looking at me with genuine apprehension, which was completely understandable considering I was really not doing well.

"No pain yet, but I think I'm hearing things," I admitted, feeling embarrassed.

"Voices? Whispers?" she ventured. "Was it something like that?"

I looked at her attentively, feeling the embarrassment engulf me because I'm certain Charlotte said anything but what I thought I heard.

"I understood you saying that the child you're expecting is mine," I confessed, even though she could burst out laughing at such madness.

How could the child she was expecting be mine when we never had any intimate contact beyond kisses?
