At eighteen, every future Alpha is sent to the prestigious Alpha Academy, where the strongest heirs learn to lead, fight, and rule. Kaia never expected to walk through its gates. Orphaned as a child after her Beta parents died defending their pack, she was raised by the Alpha and Luna who took her in as one of their own. While the rest of the pack sees her as a symbol of loyalty and sacrifice, their daughter has spent years hiding the resentment she feels toward the girl who stole the attention that should have been hers. Against all expectations, Kaia is granted permission to attend the Academy alongside the future Alpha of her pack. Surrounded by the most powerful heirs in the werewolf world, she knows she doesn't belong—and has no desire to prove otherwise. She keeps her head down, avoids the politics, and refuses to play the games everyone else seems obsessed with. But indifference is often more captivating than ambition. Before long, three of the Academy's most feared young Alphas begin watching her. Each carries dangerous secrets. Each has his own reason for wanting to get close to the quiet Beta girl who refuses to bow to anyone. In a place built on power, bloodlines, and status, Kaia's greatest secret may not be who she is... ...but who she is destined to become.

Chapter 1

KAIA

Running has always helped me see things more clearly. When I was told that my parents had died, I ran until my legs hurt, and then I sat down in the grass until Alpha Daniel found me.

He sat down next to me in silence. I don’t remember how long we sat side by side in the grass, but from my perspective as a child, it felt both long and not long enough at the same time.

Twelve years have passed, and I still deal with my inner turmoil the same way: by running. I slow down and lower my head near the river to cool off. The cool water runs down my muzzle. When I lower my head again, I hear a noise behind me, and a reassuring voice echoes in my head.

“You know, Kaia, you’re going to have to stop running away when things aren’t going well,” Daniel tells me through our mind link.

“What should I do then?” I reply curtly and instantly regret it. This man took me under his wing and into his home when I lost everything.

“Talk… for example.”

I turn around to face him. “Because if I tell you I don’t want to go to Blackwood Academy, will you listen to me?”

“No. But at least you could hear the reason for my refusal.” I snort through my nose, shaking my head in frustration. “We both know Debbie’s going to get eaten alive when she shows up at the academy. She needs you to protect her.”

“She’s the future alpha of this pack—isn’t the academy supposed to teach her everything she needs to know to protect herself and the pack?”

“True, but…”

“There’s always a ‘but.’” I mutter, but he ignores me.

“I spoke with the academy dean. This year, there are four of you betas joining the academy. They want to try to integrate you into the curriculum—they’ve chosen the best ones. I think it would be good for you. You’ll be expected to assist her. She needs you… much more than she’ll ever admit.”

The very idea of one day assisting Deborah repulses me. I know I’m a Beta girl and that it’s part of my family heritage, but ever since my birthday last month, my wolf has been fighting against this idea. She’s stronger and more independent than ever.

“I’m heading home; we’ll wait for you for dinner,” Daniel tells me before setting off for home.

After a long shower, I dry my long black hair and twist it into a messy bun on top of my head. I then slip on a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie before heading down to the kitchen.

“Can I help you?” I ask Caroline as I walk into the kitchen.

“Yes, can you put this on the table, please?” she asks, handing me a salad bowl and looking me up and down. “Are you going to the bonfire dressed like that?”

“I’m not going,” I tell her before setting the salad bowl on the table.

When I turn around, I meet her disapproving gaze. She brushes a strand of blonde hair out of her face before putting her hands on her hips. “Kaia, next week you and Debbie are leaving the pack to start a new adventure. Don’t you want to see your friends?”

“Oh, but I am going to see them. Claire and Skylar are coming over after dinner. The finale of the show we’re watching together is coming out tonight.”

“Kaia…”

“Don’t push it, Mom.” Debbie cuts her off as she walks into the kitchen. She’s already wearing a short black skirt and a red crop top, her long blonde hair cascading down her back. “We all know Kaia isn’t the type to go to parties.”

From the outside, you might think Debbie has good intentions, but don’t be fooled by her big blue eyes and her smile.

“Loser,” she whispers to me before sitting down in her chair.
