Lucy.

I wrapped the towel tighter around myself, my skin still stinging from the cold water of the spring and the even colder humiliation Aurora had left me soaked in. The images of her smirk, the shutter sound of her phone, and the helplessness I felt as I floated in that water—they refused to leave me.

The moment I stepped back into my room, I shut the door and leaned against it, trying to catch my breath.

"She’s disgusting," I whispered aloud, voice shaking. "This place should have been a rehabilitation center than a palace! How the hell did she just take pictures of me almost naked? Goodness, I was losing my mind already."

I dried myself off and changed into something warm—black leggings and a sweatshirt I didn’t even remember packing. The mirror caught my reflection. My cheeks were pink from the chill and the anger. My eyes, red from unshed tears.

I wasn’t going to cry. Not for her. Not for any of them.

Then my phone buzzed.

Once. Then again. Then it didn’t stop.

My heart picked up speed. I grabbed it, hoping it was something, anything else. But instead, it was a number I hadn’t seen in weeks—my aunt’s. My stomach twisted.

I swiped to answer.

“Hello?”

“Lucy!” my aunt’s voice came through, frantic, breathless. “Lucy, your mother just woke up. She came out of the coma!”

The towel I had been holding slipped from my hands.

“Wait, you mean.she’s awake?” I whispered, barely daring to believe it. My knees went weak.

“She is, but she’s in pain, Lucy. You have to come now.”

I didn’t wait. I didn’t ask questions. I ran.

The moment I got to the hospital, I barely gave the front desk nurse time to point me down the hallway before I was sprinting through it, dodging carts and murmuring staff.

When I got to the room, I saw my mother.

Her eyes were open. Barely. Her face was twisted in pain, her lips dry and cracked, her breaths coming in short, shallow gasps. She looked like a ghost—fragile, pale, and far too still for the woman I remembered.

“Mom…” I whispered, stepping closer.

She turned her head slowly. Her eyes found me, and I saw the corners of her mouth lift. “Lucy,” she said, so softly it was barely a sound.

“Don’t speak, Mom. I’m here. I’m right here,” I told her, grabbing her hand gently, holding it like it was the last solid thing in the world.

A wolf doctor stepped in, a clipboard tucked under his arm. His expression was tight with concern.

“It's a good thing you came on time. As you can see, she’s awake, but the pain is intense,” he said. “It could be a result of underlying illness… or, well—”

“Or what?” I snapped.

He hesitated. “Or her body is failing. The pain may be a sign that she’s truly dying.”

His words hit like a punch. My grip on her hand tightened. “No. She just woke up. You said she just woke up!”

“I understand, but—”

“Is there a cure? A treatment? Something?” I demanded, every word trembling with fear and fury.

The doctor looked at me, sympathy clouding his features. “The pain will stop when either the illness is treated—or if her body gives out.”

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “That’s not an option.”

He gave me a look that said he wished it wasn’t, then left us alone again.

My mother’s fingers twitched weakly in mine.

“I’m fine,” she rasped, as if she hadn’t just heard the same thing I had.

“No, you’re not,” I said, my eyes flooding. “You’re in pain. Don’t lie.”

“I’m proud of you,” she said instead, blinking slowly. “You’ve done more than I ever asked. You’ve fought. Survived. But don’t give up your life for me.”

“I’m not giving up anything—”

“You’ve already done more than enough,” she murmured, her voice cracking. “But I need you to promise me something.”

My tears fell freely now. “Anything.”

“Think before you act. Control your anger. You’re strong, Lucy. But strength without control is dangerous. I won’t always be around to fix your mistakes.”

“Don’t say that.” I leaned down, pressing my forehead to her hand. “Please don’t say that.”

“I love you.”

Her eyelids fluttered.

“Mom?” I said, sitting up quickly.

Her body went limp.

“Mom?!”

The monitor beeped wildly. Alarms shrieked. Doctors rushed in.

“Miss, you need to step out—!”

“No! Let me stay!” I screamed, resisting the nurse trying to lead me out.

“Please!” I fought, clawing at the doorframe, watching through the glass as they worked on her.

But I was no use here.

I was powerless.

I stood in the hallway, hands trembling, heart hollow, my eyes locked on the room where my mother’s life now hung in the balance.

Then my phone buzzed again.

I looked down.

Twenty-seven new messages.

I opened one, then another. My heart sank.

It was them.

The photos. The ones Aurora had taken. Of me, in the spring, exposed, vulnerable.

Posted.

Shared.

Trending.

Hundreds of hateful comments flooding in.

“Slut.”

“Desperate.”

“No wonder she accepted money to bear children for the thing.”

“Typical Omega trash.”

My stomach turned.

My face was everywhere. My body was everywhere. Stripped of dignity and decency.

And people were eating it up.

I stared at the screen, then at the door to my mother’s room.

I didn’t know if she was going to make it.

I didn’t know if I was going to make it.

But I did know one thing.

I couldn’t stay here.

The palace was quiet when I got back. A storm was gathering over the horizon, clouds rolling in thick and angry, just like the ones in my chest.

I didn’t care who saw me. I went straight to my room, threw open my drawers, and grabbed everything I could shove into a duffel bag. I didn’t fold. I didn’t organize. I just moved.

I found my old boots in the back of the closet and yanked them on. Threw on a coat. Stuffed my last bit of money into my jacket.

I stood in the middle of the room and looked around one last time.

All the lies.

All the torment.

All the moments I had tried to convince myself that I could endure this place just a little longer—just until the deal with Ellison was done.

But now?

That deal was shattered.

I knew people like him. He wouldn’t care about the truth behind those pictures. He’d only care about how it looked. About how it reflected on him.

He was going to throw me out like a trash when he sees those pictures.

So I beat him to it.

Alpha Ellison. The steak in front of me was cooked to perfection—medium-rare, just the way I liked it. The scent of rosemary and garlic wafted from the plate, mixing with the faint aroma of aged wine I hadn’t even sipped yet. This place was my favorite restaurant, tucked discreetly in a quiet corner of the capital and it was one of the few I considered neutral ground. No politics, no council pressure. Just quiet, just meat, just... peace. It was were my mother would always bring me when she was alive.I was halfway through slicing into the meat when my phone vibrated. Once. Then twice. LUCY.I wasn’t cursed, but right now I have every reason to believe that I was.My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall. I took deep breaths trying to calm myself, but it was futile as the tears dropped from my eyes when Beta Ethan, tore my papers into pieces. I thought he was only joking when he said he would fail me so he wouldn't have to see my ugly face in the palace. I lifted my head to meet his gaze. “Beta,” I didn't find any word leaving my lips after that. My mouth dried up immediately, and my chest burned with so much pain. I bent low to pick up what’s left of the application letter, but he dragged me up forcefully and pushed me backwards. “This is insane! Why would you fail me and tear my application letter just because you found out I was your mate? Do I disgust you that much?”The corner of his lips curled up unpleasantly. His eyes narrowed as he had a close look at me from my head to my toe. “You disgust me even more! You know, I have always thought that I wasn’t the

LUCY.“Alpha Ellison is the worst nightmare that anyone could ever come across. It was rumoured once that he was the devil that had come to dwell among mere mortals like us….” The lady dressing me up began. She had been ordered to take me away after I signed the contract of been the Alpha’s breeder and she was addressing me as it was my first time in this world. “The worse is his hatred for woman. He sees women as a tool to satisfy his sexual cravings and trust me, you are not an exception.”She put on my necklace. Why should I bother myself with such information? Truth is, I do not care about the king. I am only here for the sake of the money that would be paid to me and nothing else. I don't care how many women graze his bed, provided I get my salary as agreed, he can fuck a dead body for all I care.“You are going into his room now to serve him coffee, so make sure to be cautious of your steps and move.” she cautioned, and I gave a single nod. LUCY.The sound of the shattered cup drew out lots of people. They all stood, staring at me. I was dumb, short of words. How do I explain what just happened? Will they believe that I was pushed and didn't do it intentionally? My eyes landed on the lady who had pushed me without even saying sorry. She was staring back at me, but I would call it a glare because I could see envy written boldly on her face. What was wrong with her? Did she intentionally do this because I was brought in as the Alpha’s breeder?“Who is the riff-raff that did this?” The voice of an elderly woman drew my attention. But from the look of things she was older than the king himself. Was she Alpha's stepmother? No, that can not be, I was so sure I heard the news of the Alpha King losing but of his parents. I looked behind the woman and then I saw a young lady who would be the same age as me.I swallowed every saliva in my mouth as she walked closer ad picked up a piece of the cup. She looked at it intently while m

Lucy.My palms became so sweaty as I stared back at the Alpha King, who stood before me, running his fingers through my hair. The way he was looking at me made me become very still. His touch made my limbs tremble. Was he angry at me? I'm not sure if he does smile, but he had given me a sarcastic smirk at first.I raised my eyes to look elsewhere, but suddenly, our eyes met. I wanted to say something, maybe to ask why he was in my room, but I was short of words. My lips agape, but not a single word could come out of it.“Why is my breeder suddenly close to the Luna? Isn't that interesting?” he began, breaking the silence in the room. “You felt you are now the boss because you passed my test, huh? That's why you didn't just break my diamond cup, but you were already friends with Luna Dowager?” he sniffed, making me rub my palm together, and then he let go of my hair and stepped back a bit.My eyes fell on the lady who had dressed me up. Lucy.I spent the entire morning pacing in my room, my fingers tangled in my hair as my thoughts raced like a storm through my head. Why did Beta Ethan want to see me? After everything that bastard said to me at the interview! after how he tossed me aside like yesterday’s trash in front of the entire pack, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. He’d made his decision. He rejected me. So what does he want to see me for? Probably to reject me again.I sighed, glancing once more at the note I’d found slipped under my door last night after I sent the man away. No signature, no explanation—just his name written in tight, sharp handwriting: Ethan wants to see you. Come to his office. I had crumpled it immediately, then smoothed it out again a minute later. And now here I was. Against my better judgment. Dressed and out of my room, walking through the unfamiliar halls of the palace.Regret hit me the moment I stepped into the corridor. The palace was a labyrinth—grand, cold, and intimidating. Ev

Alpha Ellison.I paused outside Ethan’s quarters, knocking firmly twice. Nothing.“Ethan,” I called, my voice echoing faintly. No answer.Odd.I tightened my grip on the door handle. If it were anyone else’s room, I wouldn’t have thought twice, but Ethan was my beta—and had no freaking right not answering my call when I could smell that he was in there. With a grunt, I shoved the heavy oak door open, the hinges creaking as it swung inward. And then I froze. There, standing in the middle of Ethan’s room, was Lucy.My breeder. My new breeder. The one who had only just arrived at the palace. The same woman I had seen in hushed conversation with my stepmother just a day ago. Her eyes snapped up to meet mine, wide, startled. Guilt? Fear? I couldn’t place the exact emotion on her face, but I saw it all the same. And Ethan stood near her, his jaw tight, arms folded across his chest like he’d just caught her in the middle of something.“What the hell is going on in here?” I demanded. But befo

My sheets clung to my damp skin, my hair dripping down my shoulders. “What the hell—?!”And then I saw them.Standing at the edge of my bed, with a silver bucket in hand and the kind of smug satisfaction that only decades of privilege could breed, was Luna Dowager Calantha. Right beside her, practically glowing with malicious glee, stood Aurora. Her hair was pulled back in a neat braid, her lips painted a venomous red that matched the evil twinkle in her eyes.“Rise and shine, darling,” Aurora said with a fake pout. “It’s time you start earning your place here.”I threw the soaked covers off my body and stood up, shivering in my thin nightgown. “You drenched me. Alpha Ellison.I woke to the pale glow of morning pushing past the edges of my curtains, a softness I hadn’t felt in months. My body felt... rested. Not just physically, but something deeper. Like my soul had taken a breath.Strange.I blinked at the ceiling, allowing myself a rare moment of stillness. The blankets were tangled around my legs, the air still warm with the scent of lavender and something faintly familiar. Then it hit me—Lucy. She had come to my room last night, hadn’t she?I shot upright, scanning the room. No sign of her. The armchair near the fireplace was empty. The slippers at the end of my bed hadn’t moved. Was it a dream? I could’ve sworn I felt her warmth beside me… the soft pressure of her fingers, the way her presence had wrapped around my heart like a balm. But now, she was gone. If she had been here at all.A bitter exhale escaped my lips as I ran a hand down my face. Dreams didn’t usually leave this kind of ache.I shoved the thought aside. Today wasn’t the

Lucy. The silence of the night wrapped around me like a warm blanket, the only sounds were the soft rustle of leaves outside and the rhythm of my own breathing. Sleep had come easier than I expected, especially after the emotionally draining week we’d all had. A sharp, guttural scream pierced through the quiet, jerking me upright. My heart stuttered in my chest. I blinked against the darkness, trying to shake the lingering fog of sleep. Another shout echoed down the hall—raw, pained, and unmistakably male.“Alpha Ellison.”I didn’t think—I just moved. I threw off the covers, the cold air biting at my legs as I raced out the door, my bare feet slapping against the cool marble floor. The hallway was dark and the only light that came in was the moonlight filtering through stained glass windows, casting ghostly colors across the walls. His screams only grew louder, more desperate.I was nearly at his door when something slammed into me from the side.“What the—?”My body hit the floor ha

Alpha Ellison.I knew it was a mistake the moment she opened her mouth.Ivy.She sat beside me, her lips painted too red, her laughter too loud, the clink of her utensils far too frequent. She devoured the food as if she hadn’t been fed in days, pausing only to interject into conversations that didn’t involve her.“Minister Dagan,” she cooed, cutting across his discussion on regional grain shortages, “you know the real problem is the way the markets are structured, don’t you think?”The man blinked, confused, unsure whether to answer. He cleared his throat, looking toward me.I said nothing.Ivy didn’t seem to notice—or didn’t care. She speared another piece of roast lamb and spoke with her mouth full. “It’s all about control. The Alpha must be firm with the local councils. Like you’ve always said, my king.”I clenched my jaw.She used to know when to keep quiet. She used to understand her place. But now… now she was flailing, desperate to reclaim something that had already been lost.

Lucy.I don’t remember the exact moment I snapped—I just remember the feel of Ivy’s hair in my hands, her shriek as I dragged her down, and the satisfying thud when her back hit the floor.“You little snake!” I screamed, straddling her waist as I threw the first punch. “You tried to ruin everything!”Ivy’s nails clawed at my arms, her legs kicking beneath me as we thrashed across the floor like wild animals. Her laughter, twisted and shrill, only fueled my rage.Elizabeth shouted something behind me—maybe a plea, maybe my name—I wasn’t listening. I didn’t care. I wanted Ivy to feel the humiliation she’d tried to drown me in.“Get off her, please! Lady lucy, stop!” Elizabeth’s hands clawed at my shoulders, trying to pull me back. But Ivy grinned beneath me, her lip split and bleeding. “Go ahead,” she spat. “Hit me again. That’s all you’re good for. Violence. A trash like you can not be expected to act differently.”I raised my hand again—just as a knock sounded at the door. The room fr

Lucy. For two days, I hadn’t seen the sky. The windows in my room were tall and wide, but always locked. Guards stood outside the door, and no one came in except Elizabeth—who brought me food I rarely touched and looked at me with eyes that pitied more than served. My soul itched with the need to move, to speak, to be—but I was caged, like some prized doll being conditioned before sale.On the morning of the third day, the lock clicked and the heavy door creaked open. I didn't rise from the edge of the bed right away. My heart stuttered. I waited for shouting, for punishment. Instead, it was a tall guard in silver-trimmed armor who stepped inside.“You are to come with me,” he said, his voice like stone. “The Alpha King has permitted you to join the palace.”Permitted. Like a favor, not a right. Honestly I wonder what people in power think of themselves sometimes. Like this man literally gave me a contract to be his breeder, made love to me like I was the best thing that has happened
