(KAIRA'S POV)

"Oh my God. I want to disappear." I heard Mum gushing from the room.

"As you should." I called from the bathroom. I gave my face one last towel pat and then came out in my Mickey Mouse nightgown and my hair tightly in a bonnet.

Mum's face was covered in her hands, her perfect hair updo was now a pretty mess of hair clips, pins and a lot of loose strands and she was wearing Tom's suit jacket over her beautiful ivory wedding dress.

To be honest, we looked very much alike when we walked up the stairs and to my room together. Similar physical descriptions, oversized tux jackets, messy hair and a red-dipped embarrassed face.

I looked worse with a broken heel, drenched dress and streaking makeup. Yes, I don't want to talk about how similar to a clown I looked and the front row seat I gave Slade Horton to that.

"I feel so embarrassed." She said in a muffled tone, still not lifting her head up.

"The word you should use is ashamed, Mum." I wagged my finger at her.

She lifted her face up wearing the most sober expression as she said. "I feel that too."

My face fell and I hurried to sit beside her on the large bed with my arm around her neck.

"I'm sorry. I was just joking and that's not nice." I apologized.

"You should not be joking. You should be really scolding me for doing that." She palmed her forehead. "What was I thinking? Anyone could have walked in! And I told Tom but he said that Erica said you both were at the pool house. I shouldn't have listened."

"Well, we were at the pool house, Mum." I said with a shrug. "Then I had a little accident and Slade brought me back."

Mum turned to me. "That's true. And it's the reason why you both looked like that, right?"

"Yup!" I said, remembering that Slade was dripping wet when we came in too. Now that I think of it, there was no reason not to drop me down.

I pushed the warm thought away.

"I fell into the pool and he jumped in to save me." I explained.

Mum straightened her back immediately and her eyes widened. "Really? That's so sweet."

I frowned. "You know I hate water."

"Yes but you've been careless around it recently." She said and her lips tugged into a smirk. "Or have you been falling because you know someone will catch you."

I gasped. "Eww!" I answered immediately.

Mum frowned. "What?”

“He’s arrogant.”

U paused. “And annoying.”

Another pause. “Insufferable!”

Then— “And unfortunately very handsome.”

“Mum!!”

She shrugged her shoulders. “He is handsome.”

"I don't care. He's a jerk and he annoys me." I spilled, folding my arms.

Mum peered at my face in surprise. "That's very… that sounds deep." She said with a nervous chuckle. "You really don't like him, I mean as a friend? Has he been mean to you?"

More than mean! I wanted to say.

"He's just annoying and we don't see eye to eye." I explained.

Mum's eyebrows creased in surprise. "I thought you both were getting along." She said sadly. Then a smile climbed her lips. "Your dance was exceptional. I forgot how good a dancer you used to be until I saw you on the dance floor. The first guy, Tom's rude nephew." Mum pulled a face as she described Van. "He was so full of himself and not even such a great dancer. But when you danced with Slade. Oh so perfect."

I rolled my eyes but I could feel the heat on my cheeks. "Erica said we had to dance." I was looking down at my fingers.

"You and Slade had to dance? Why?" Mum wanted to know.

"Well because—" then I realized, I wasn't supposed to tell Mum that we ran away from some rude relatives. I didn't want her to be worried or sad.

"She just thought it was proper. You know, best man and chief bridesmaid dance." I lied.

Mum broke into a grin. "Erica is so smart. That was so beautiful to watch. Tom and I loved it." She clapped with a huge grin.

I smiled and touched her cheek lightly. "You look so happy and you looked so beautiful today." I said.

Her grin faltered into a smile, then she took my hands in hers.

"You looked so gorgeous. So stunning." She said. "And I… I really want to say I'm sorry, Kaira. For not telling you about this on time."

"That's okay, Mum. I really understand." I gave her hand a squeeze back. "I can see how happy you are and I love it for you."

"Thank you." She pulled me into a hug that lasted for almost two minutes.

Then she pulled back, biting her lip.

I sighed. "What is it?"

Her fingers found each other and started to fiddle idly. I let out another sigh.

"Tom and I wanted to meet with you and Slade tomorrow morning but I don't think we can." She said and stared down at her hands. "After tonight, we are too embarrassed."

"What did you want to meet about?" I pressed.

"Our honeymoon." She said with a wide smile that looked too suspicious.

"Okayyy." I said.

She sighed in resignation. "We could leave tomorrow, Kaira."

My shoulders dropped. "You mean you are leaving tomorrow." I concluded.

"It's the best time to go to Fiji and he—"

My eyes widened. "Fiji? He's taking you to Fiji Island?"

Mum nodded, unable to suppress the grin.

"You've always wanted to go to Fiji?" I purred.

"I knowww." Mum agreed.

"Aww." I pouted. "That's so sweet."

She nodded. "So Tom wanted you and Slade to get to know each other in the meantime, so maybe go for a few outings together." She said and I tried not to roll my eyes.

That sounded ridiculous! Why would Slade and I go out together?

"Come on, Kay." Mum urged softly. "I would really like you both to get along."

"We aren't good friends, Mum. Slade doesn't even like me."

"Well what if he surprises you?" She asked, staring into my eyes.

I felt my throat dry.

What if I just don't want to be near Slade Horton?

I withheld a sigh. "How long is your honeymoon?"

Mum smiled.

Too innocently.

That smile alone terrified me.

"Three weeks."

My body went cold immediately. Three weeks. Twenty-one days. Five hundred and four hours. Alone with Slade Horton.

This just keeps getting better.

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The First Time In Years

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't sleep that night. Not a single wink.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. The way he'd looked at me when he said those words. You're mine. The way his voice had cracked just slightly, like he was admitting something that scared him.I tossed and turned, clutching the teddy bear to my chest like it was some kind of anchor.Dream of me?What had possessed me to say that? I'd typed it before I could stop myself, my fingers moving on their own accord. And then I'd spent the next hour staring at my phone, waiting for a reply that never came.He said he'd dream of me.At least, I thought he did. He hadn't actually typed it. But he hadn't denied it either.I groaned, pressing my face into my pillow. This was insane. I barely knew him. He'd been cold and distant and sometimes downright mean. But then there were moments—fleeting, fragile moments—where I caught a glimpse of something else. Something tender. Something raw.And it made me want to know more.--

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Carnival Confessions.

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what had come over Slade. One moment he was complaining about boredom and checking his emails, the next he was squaring up to this Harry guy like he was about to start a fistfight over a stuffed bear."Step back." Slade's voice had been cold as ice, his jaw set in that rigid way I was starting to recognize meant he was holding something back.I opened my mouth to say something—to tell him it was fine, that I didn't actually care that much about the toy—but the words died in my throat when I saw the look in his eyes.He was furious. Not at me, I realized. At Harry. At the way Harry had looked at me, the way he'd kissed my hand, the way he'd called me beautiful."Slade—" I started, but he wasn't listening. He was already at the counter, slapping down money for the game. The attendant, a bored-looking teenager with acne and a nose ring, perked up when she saw the cash."Three rounds each," Slade said without looking at her. "We'll see who gets the highest sc

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Challenge.

(SLADE’S POV)Life can be a bitch you know! After the first day I set my eyes on Makaira five years ago, I didn’t see her until the first day school resumed after the Christmas holiday. My dad had invited some kids from my school to celebrate Christmas with us and so I automatically assumed that she was one of the kids.I should have found out more about her but she provoked so much emotions from me that I didn’t want to know anything about her. Not even her name. Maybe if I had done my research, I would have noticed the same surname she shared with Mrs Shanice. And maybe I woukd havw not been too blind ans stupid to ignore the striking resemblance they shared. Maybe I would have not been such a jerk and a terrible person to her.If I had known that I would have a shot at being so close to her, then maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole—“That was so great!!” Makaira exclaimed as we feel in to step with each other. We had just finished a ride at the Ferris wheel, an experienc

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    A Fair!

(SLADE'S POV)"A fair!!" She exclaimed, eyes widened as she peeked through the window at the huge iron gates."More like a VIP preview night." I corrected. My attention was on my phone, where I was going through my itinerary."Even better! Because now we have a lot of rides to ourselves." She was craning her neck even harder now. "And I think I see older people.""Probably. Our parents were the ones invited." I couldn't keep my eyes on my phone for long, I had to steal a glance again and I was disappointed because I couldn't see those sparkling blue eyes but at least she wasn't so sad anymore. Her excitement was palpable, it has been since we got here and she realized that we are here for the exclusive launch of a fair."What are we really waiting for?" She asked, her body almost out of the car.A couple of knocks on the window interrupted my answer."That." I said with a sigh as I slipped my phone in my pocket. "Are you ready?""I've been ready since we got here! I love fairs so much

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    An Amazing Day.

(KAIRA'S POV)"I'm not a Horton." I said to myself, my teeth gnashed against each other. But the person who stared back at me in the mirror looked very much like a Horton.A beauty team had just finished with me. Light makeup, perfect hair pinned up, a beautiful beige crop top over the classiest pair of high-waisted denim jeans I had ever seen.Slade was right, we didn't go home. We went to a hotel and I got ready in a beautiful suite that looked like it belonged to a princess.I couldn't deny that I looked pretty but everything wasn't sitting right with me."I'm not a Horton." I repeated to my reflection in the mirror.I kept my eyes shut trying to suppress the emotions that were building inside. Then I grabbed the little pink purse and stepped out of the door. But Slade was standing right there so I doubled back and missed my steps because of the heeled glass slippers I was wearing.I was reaching for the doorknob, to grasp it for a little stability but I missed it and would have cr

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Not Over, Pauper!

(KAIRA’S POV)I have lived in PineCrest for thirteen years, which means I have also had the privilege (thanks to Tom Horton) of going from PineCrest elementary to PineCrest high school. I kid you not, despite all these years I have made no friends. Literally, none at all. The most attention I get is when I am getting bullied or being laughed at. The only people I am cordial is some of my teachers, and of course Mrs Skye, our ink club matron. That being established, you know how antisocial I am in school so I kid you not when I say that I have no idea who the angry but pretty brunette, holding my phone is.Her almond eyes looked me over like my presence deeply disgusted her.“Who the hell do you think you are?” She greeted.I frowned, unsure of what to say. She leaned forward. “It doesn’t matter that your cheap mother found her way in to the Horton family, you will always be a charity case.” She laughed. “Slade already made it clear to us all.”My heart sank. The fact that she invol

(KAIRA'S POV)Slade put me down immediately and draped his jacket over my shoulder. (KAIRA'S POV)Slade was torturing me with silence. Simply leading the way.I followed him closely like a pupil behind a headmaster, past the house doors, to the hedged pathways, to the garden gates, past chrysanthemums, a variety of roses, orchids, daisies… and then carefully past the stepping ston

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Beautiful Nightmare.

(KAIRA'S POV) The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. (KAIRA'S POV) "Mr. Horton, your project partner is… Miss Jin." Our English teacher, Mrs. Reed, announced. My stomach sank, and a heavy weight transferred to my chest. Of all the people in PineCrest High, it had to be Slade Horton. Football captain. Sole hair of Horton Empire. Most popular an
