Elena did not sleep.

Out there beyond the glass, the city glowed faintly through a crack in the curtains. Her old apartment could fit inside this single room, maybe twice.

Foot dangling, she stared at the floor - his grin kept flashing behind her eyes.

  Not confusion.

  Not hesitation.

  Recognition.

You’re the one they picked, without a doubt.

Still hearing Adrian’s voice long after he spoke. The sound stuck around, looping without permission. Words parked themselves behind her thoughts. They showed up again when she least expected. Each time louder than before.

A quiet tap sounded on the wood moments past dawn.

  She stiffened.

“It’s me,” came Adrian’s voice, steady and quiet.

Up she got, careful and quiet, then turned the handle to let the door swing wide.

Still calm, he wore a clean white shirt with black pants. Last night's mess left no mark on him at all.

“You should have security outside my door,” she said immediately.

  “There is.”

  Her stomach tightened.

“And you did not think to mention that?”

  “You needed rest, not anxiety.”

  “I would prefer honesty.”

Her movements caught his attention slowly.

  “You are still here.”

“That does not mean I trust you.”

A shadow passed behind his eyes, just for a moment. Then stillness returned.

  “Fair,” he said.

She crossed her arms. “You said they chose me. Chosen me for what?”

  “To replace something.”

Something about that reply sat wrong inside her.

  “Replace who?”

For a moment, he paused. Then moved on.

“That is what we are confirming.”

Her pulse quickened. “You still do not know?”

  “I know what they believe.”

  “Then tell me.”

A hush followed his entrance, the door clicking shut at his back. The space seemed to pause when he arrived.

“They believe you are connected to the Laurent family.”

Her eyes locked on his face, full of doubt. A moment passed without sound. He stood there, waiting. Her breath caught, sharp and sudden. Disbelief shaped her silence.

  “That is impossible.”

  “Perhaps.”

  “My parents were schoolteachers.”

  “Your adoptive parents were.”

  Falling short stung hard.

She swallowed. “Why would anyone think I am connected to you?”

“Because twenty three years ago, my father had a child with someone outside the marriage.”

A squeeze of space hit without warning. Walls seemed closer than before.

  “And?”

  “And that child disappeared.”

  Her breath caught.

“You think that child is me?”

  “I think someone else does.”

The thought slipped through her thoughts like smoke. What it meant did not settle right away.

“So you married me because I might be your half sister?”

The muscles in his face pulled taut, just a little. A quiet shift, but noticeable if you were watching close.

“If you were my sister, this arrangement would not exist.”

  “Then what are you saying?”

“I am saying that powerful men believed my father’s hidden child survived.”

  Her pulse raced.

“And they think I am her.”

  “Yes.”

A tremor ran through her lungs before the air escaped. The moment stretched thin as sound left her lips. Quiet followed, heavy yet fragile.

  “This is insane.”

  “Perhaps.”

Back she moved, fingers gripping the air to stay balanced.

“If that were true, why would it matter?”

  “Because inheritance matters.”

  There it was.

  Money.

  Power.

  Control.

“They think I could claim part of your empire.”

  “Yes.”

“And that is enough for them to break into my apartment?”

“It is enough for them to eliminate uncertainty.”

A cold stillness filled her at that word - eliminate. It dropped heavy, sharp, cutting through thought.

“You think they would kill me?”

Stillness filled the space where words should have been.

Stillness spoke clearer than words ever could.

Her fingers slid into her curls while she moved back and forth across the floor.

  “I need proof.”

  “You will have it.”

  “How?”

“I have ordered a private DNA test.”

She blinked hard. "You did that without even telling me?"

  “Yes.”

  “Adrian.”

  “You deserve answers.”

“You do not get to decide that for me.”

  He stepped closer.

“I get to decide how you survive.”

Fury lit up inside her ribs.

  “You do not own me.”

  “No.”

A hush touched his words, barely.

“But I will not let them own you either.”

His gaze hit her like a sudden stop in breath. A pause where rhythm broke without warning.

Beneath his grip, a quiet emotion stirred. A feeling lived where discipline usually ruled. Not far under the surface, another truth stayed hidden. This one mattered more than he let on.

  Something almost protective.

A sound at the door broke the silence.

  Adrian opened the door.

A figure in crisp clothing waited by the door. She kept still, facing the street.

Folks from the news were already waiting, she said, voice low.

  Elena frowned. “Press?”

Adrian looked at her. “We announced the marriage this morning.”

  Her stomach dropped.

  “You what?”

  “It was necessary.”

  “For who?”

  “For you.”

Just as she started to protest, the phone shook nonstop in her hand.

Flooded the screen came messages, one after another without pause. A sudden rush filled every corner of the display.

  News alerts.

  Social media notifications.

  Her name trending beside Adrian’s.

A door creaked when she lifted the first headline. It sat alone on the page, waiting.

Mysterious Bride Of Billionaire Adrian Laurent Identified

  Her chest tightened.

“You turned me into a public spectacle.”

“I turned you into someone untouchable.”

“That man from last night did not look untouchable.”

  Adrian’s jaw flexed.

“He will not approach you again.”

  “How can you be sure?”

  “Because now you are mine.”

The sharp edge in his voice froze her breathing.

  “And that changes everything?”

  “Yes.”

Downstairs, a sudden rap rang out. Then silence crept back like it never left.

  Raised voices followed.

  Elena’s heart skipped.

  “What is that?”

Down the hall went Adrian. "Wait right here." He didn’t look back

Still, she ignored every word. Quietly, her mind stayed closed.

Down the stairs she went, trailing behind him.

Two security guards stood near the entrance.

A figure appeared near the entrance, draped in a deep red gown. She lingered there, motionless, like someone who’d slipped through barriers meant to keep her out.

  She looked poised.

  Calm.

  Dangerous.

Right away, her eyes landed on Elena.

  The air shifted.

“This must be her,” the voice came quiet.

A silence settled as Adrian spoke. His words came out sharp, like frost cracking underfoot. The air between them changed without warning

“I did not come for you.”

Still watching, her gaze stayed fixed on Elena.

Elena stood still, like her feet had grown into the ground.

A foot moved ahead, careful at first. The next motion followed just as quiet, deliberate in its reach.

Faces never lied when seen that near - hers held angles that watched too much. Her eyes didn’t rest; they measured, weighed every flicker nearby.

“You look just like her,” the woman murmured.

Who exactly? Elena asked, voice sharp.

A small smile touched her lips.

  “You truly do not know.”

Into the space they both stood, Adrian moved.

  “This conversation is over.”

Frost edged her face. The look in her eyes turned sharp.

“Do not pretend you are protecting her,” she said to him. “You are protecting yourself.”

  Elena’s pulse pounded.

  “What is she talking about?”

A silence settled between them first. Then came the pause where words might have been.

Not quite straight, her head leaned a little as she looked at Elena. A quiet intensity sat in her eyes, fixed, hard to ignore.

“Has he told you about Valencia?”

A ripple followed the name as it landed.

  Elena looked at Adrian.

Now his face didn’t move at all.

  Quietly, she wondered about Valencia.

A grin stretched across her face.

  “You see? He keeps secrets.”

Faster than a slammed door, Adrian's voice cut through the air. "Go," he snapped.

Her gaze landed on him again, after drifting away for some time.

  “You cannot hide her forever.”

  “I do not intend to.”

A quiet chuckle slipped from her lips.

  “You are already too late.”

A moment passed before Elena moved. From inside her bag, the woman took something slowly - a picture, creased from folding. It appeared without warning.

A piece flew through air, landing hard on stone. Between their feet, it lay still.

Right away, security stepped in, guiding her toward the exit without letting her speak again.

The heavy thud echoed through the hall when the front door closed fast.

A hush crept through the walls. Stillness filled every corner. The air held its breath without warning.

Frozen in place, Elena looked down at the photo lying on the ground near her shoes.

Bent at the waist, she lifted it. Slowly her fingers closed around the object.

Fingers shook at first, then her palms followed. A slight waver moved through both arms.

A small child stood next to him - her hand close to his arm. The man wore long sleeves, eyes fixed ahead.

Far too much of that face matched Adrian's - no mistaking it really.

  But younger.

Right there next to him stood a girl who could have been Elena's twin. She matched every detail, as if pulled from the same moment in time.

  Same eyes.

  Same face.

Apart from the hair, nothing stood out. The rest stayed just as it had been before.

A single word appeared on the reverse side of the photograph, scrawled in ink that had lost its strength over time.

  Valencia.

Her feet stumbled as the earth moved underfoot.

Her eyes rose, meeting Adrian’s. Then silence hung between them.

  “Who is she?”

Faces changed. Not still any more.

Complicated - that’s what it turned out to be.

  “She was my sister.”

A hollow sound began where her heartbeat slowed. The syllable lingered beneath her ribs instead of fading.

  “Was?”

  “She disappeared eighteen years ago.”

Blood thudded hard against her ribs.

“And they think I am her.”

Her eyes stayed on his. He did not look away.

  “Yes.”

Fumbling through her words, Elena spoke up - her voice trembling at the edges. The query hung heavy, one she nearly dreaded getting a reply to.

  “And do you?”

Only when the fire rose in her chest did Elena notice she wasn’t breathing. “What about you?” she said once more. Stillness settled around Adrian, lasting until it began to ache. “I do not believe you are Valencia,” he said finally. It didn’t mean yes either. A grip closed hard on the photo. Staring out was a child's face, caught forever that way. Those eyes matched exactly. The shape of the chin ran true too. A small turn of the head echoed something deep inside. “She looks exactly like me.” “Yes.” “Then how can you be so certain?” “Because I watched my sister grow up,” he replied quietly. “And you are not her.” Something inside her grew still when he spoke so sure, yet it did little to truly hold. “Then why are they convinced?” “Because Valencia vanished without a body.” Heavy silence followed each word. A pause stretched after every syllable spoken. “No one confirmed she was dead,” he continued. “Only that she was gone.” Elena swallowed.

A gasp escaped Elena, sharp and sudden. Her chest tightened as air fled without warning. The moment hung, brittle. Nothing moved but the silence between heartbeats. “What did you just say?” Fear flickered across her features, Daniel noticing every shift. His gaze held steady, tracing what words left unsaid. Adrian’s voice remained steady on the phone. “The hallway camera on your floor is connected to a private grid. I had access installed after our meeting.” “You put cameras in my building?” she demanded. “I secured the perimeter. That detail is not important right now.” “Not important?” “Elena.” A shift came into his voice, lower now, edged with something tense. “There is a man still inside your apartment.” The room seemed to shrink as her heartbeat thundered through her ears, drowning out everything else. A rush of noise filled her head, leaving little space for anything but the pulse racing inside her chest. Daniel stepped closer. “What is he saying

  • A CONTRACT SIGNED IN BLOOD AND DESIRE    The House Of Glass

Off she went, the door swinging shut behind her - Elena hardly knew she’d stepped outside. Outside Laurent Holdings, the city wore its usual face. Down below, cars rolled between buildings. Sidewalks filled with folks moving fast. Nothing paused, everything kept pace. Yet deep within her thoughts, all had changed. Adopted. The word echoed again and again. It was something Daniel kept to himself. She didn’t know it at all. She found out later they kept it quiet. Not a word came from them before. Funny how Adrian Laurent found it first, without her knowing. Anger clamped down inside her ribs at the idea. Outside the building stood the car Adrian had set up. Without a sound, the driver pulled open the door. She paused before climbing in - like crossing into that seat would lock her into a choice unchangeable. Still, she went ahead. Outside the glass, buildings thinned into driveways behind iron fences. Time stretched thin as she rode through parts of town
