Only when the fire rose in her chest did Elena notice she wasn’t breathing.

“What about you?” she said once more.

Stillness settled around Adrian, lasting until it began to ache.

“I do not believe you are Valencia,” he said finally.

  It didn’t mean yes either.

A grip closed hard on the photo. Staring out was a child's face, caught forever that way. Those eyes matched exactly. The shape of the chin ran true too. A small turn of the head echoed something deep inside.

  “She looks exactly like me.”

  “Yes.”

“Then how can you be so certain?”

“Because I watched my sister grow up,” he replied quietly. “And you are not her.”

Something inside her grew still when he spoke so sure, yet it did little to truly hold.

  “Then why are they convinced?”

“Because Valencia vanished without a body.”

Heavy silence followed each word. A pause stretched after every syllable spoken.

“No one confirmed she was dead,” he continued. “Only that she was gone.”

Elena swallowed. “How did she disappear?”

  Adrian’s expression darkened.

  “She was taken.”

  The air felt thinner.

  “Taken by who?”

“A rival family at the time. My father made enemies easily.”

  “And they never found her?”

  “No.”

  The solution came clear. Done.

Elena turned her eyes toward the old photo once more.

“If she was taken as a child, she would not look like this now.”

“No,” Adrian agreed. “But resemblance is enough to cause doubt.”

Her pulse quickened. “And doubt is enough for them to investigate.”

  “Yes.”

A sudden pause came before she placed the photo onto the table - like touching something already gone.

  “So I am collateral.”

  “No.”

  “Then what am I?”

Close up he moved, Adrian dropped his tone.

“You are a variable they cannot control.”

  “That sounds worse.”

  “For them,” he stated.

A hush fell across her ribs like a held breath. Then - lightning thin and cold - zipped beneath the skin.

“Why did that woman mention you protecting yourself?” she asked.

A muscle near his cheek twitched. Silence followed, sharp but brief.

“Because if you are proven to be Valencia, the board could challenge my leadership.”

Her eyes widened. “Your own company would turn on you?”

  “Power does not tolerate uncertainty.”

Her eyes stayed on him, watching each small move he made.

“You married me to secure your position.”

“I married you to prevent them from reaching you first.”

  “Both can be true.”

It wasn’t something he refused to admit.

Truth made her uneasy, yet she chose it over deception.

Down the hall, a sound of steps bounced off the walls.

A figure from Adrian’s team moved close without noise.

“Sir, we have identified the woman.”

  Elena turned sharply.

  “Who is she?”

Before speaking, the guard looked over at Adrian.

“Her name is Camille Verne. She was previously engaged to Mr. Laurent.”

Engagement hit with more force than expected.

Frowning slightly, Elena turned her gaze toward Adrian.

  “You were engaged.”

  “Yes.”

“And you forgot to mention that.”

  “It was not relevant.”

She echoed the words, “Not relevant?”.

“Camille’s family once partnered with mine. The engagement was strategic.”

  “And?”

  “It ended.”

  “Why?”

A quiet shift came over his gaze. The look in his eyes grew a fraction sharper.

  “She demanded more than partnership.”

Questions piled up when the reply stayed unclear.

“Does she believe I am Valencia?”

“She believes whatever benefits her,” Adrian replied calmly.

  Folded arms, Elena stood still.

  “This keeps getting worse.”

It stayed quiet. No words came out.

Between them, a thick quiet fell. The air grew dense with words unsaid.

Elena broke the silence next, her voice softer now.

“If I am not Valencia, why does this resemblance exist?”

His eyes moved, just a little, like he was measuring a thought.

  “My father had many secrets.”

  “That is not an answer.”

“It may be the only one.”

She shook her head. “No. There has to be more.”

Her eyes met his as he paused, after which words came out - suddenly cold, sharp - that pulled the air from her chest.

  “There was a rumor.”

  “What rumor?”

“That my father arranged for a replacement.”

  Her pulse spiked.

  “A replacement for what?”

  “For leverage.”

Her eyes stayed fixed on his face, searching for meaning. A quiet moment passed while her thoughts caught up. The room felt still around them both.

“Are you saying he planted a child to manipulate someone?”

“I am saying he was capable of it.”

A weight settled on her shoulders, slow but certain. It pulled without noise, steady as breath held too long.

“You think I could have been placed into my adoptive family deliberately?”

“I think someone ensured your records were sealed for a reason.”

Shaky, her legs barely held on. Weakness crept up from the knees like a slow tide pulling strength away.

  “My parents loved me.”

  “I am not questioning that.”

  “Then what are you questioning?”

  He hesitated.

  “Your origin.”

A sting came through in that one syllable.

Facing the opposite direction, Elena focused on slowing down her breath.

A crack appeared in everything she once trusted. Suddenly, the ground wasn’t steady anymore.

“What if I do not want to know?” she whispered.

  “You do.”

Out came the words, steady and sure. Then silence settled between them.

Funny how often truth comes from the one you’d rather ignore.

From across the house came a sharp crashing sound.

One stood still. The other did too.

Faster than a blink, Adrian was heading into the noise. Then footsteps followed close behind what he heard.

Footsteps behind him, though she meant to stay away.

Floor tiles in the west corridor held broken pieces of a ceramic vase.

A figure in a uniform shook close by.

“I did not touch it,” she said quickly.

  Adrian’s eyes scanned the corridor.

  “Was anyone here?”

  “No, sir.”

Again, the cold crept back into Elena's bones.

This old place should have kept us safe. Instead, it felt thin at the edges, like paper folded once too often.

  Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A quick look landed on the display.

  His expression shifted.

Go on, speak now, Elena insisted.

His eyes met hers without turning away.

“The man from your apartment has been identified.”

  Her heart pounded.

  “Who is he?”

“He works for the Verne family.”

  Camille.

  Elena’s chest tightened.

“So this is not about Valencia.”

“It is,” Adrian replied. “But it is also about control.”

  She stepped closer.

“What are they trying to prove?”

  “That you are legitimate.”

  “Legitimate what?”

  “My father’s daughter.”

A silence followed the last word. It stayed there, unbroken.

  Elena felt dizzy.

“If they prove that, what happens?”

  “You inherit.”

  “And you lose.”

  “Yes.”

It stung, that truth. A quiet weight settled where words had been.

“You are not afraid of that?”

  His eyes stayed on hers.

“I am not afraid of losing money.”

“Then what are you afraid of?”

He spoke a little more quietly now.

“That they will remove you before you can decide what you are.”

Something quiet glowed under the edge of her panic.

His worry seemed real, just then.

  It felt personal.

“Why do you care?” she asked quietly.

  His jaw tightened.

“I told you before. I should have intervened sooner.”

“You keep saying that. What does it mean?”

Just as silence started to settle, a sudden blink ran through the room's glow.

Footsteps echoed as the lights went out. Darkness filled every room without warning.

Footsteps paused as a piercing beep tore through the air.

Fear shot through Elena's chest like a spark. Her breath caught midair.

  “Adrian.”

  “Stay behind me.”

A distant sound of walking filled the hallways. The noise moved through empty spaces without stopping.

  Not security.

  Too soft.

  Too careful.

A sharp silence followed when the alarm stopped.

  Silence.

  Thick and suffocating.

Fingers curled around fabric, Elena held on before knowing she had moved.

  “Is someone inside?”

“Yes,” came his voice, soft and low.

The beat of her heart slammed hard against her ribs.

  “How?”

“They cut external power for three seconds.”

Her hands shook at how exact it was.

Footsteps paused just beyond the doorway. Light shifted where the wall met the floor.

A figure in uniform sprinted over from the far side.

  Voices overlapped.

A sound cracked through the floor above.

  Elena’s breathing grew shallow.

Into his arms she came, sudden and close. Adrian held tight before thought caught up.

With steady pressure came a sense of safety. A grip held tight without squeezing too hard.

  Not calculated.

  Real.

Footsteps echoed down the hall - then a figure stepped into view.

  “Sir, the intruder escaped.”

Footsteps faltered beneath her as the ground seemed to tilt. A hush crept through her chest just before everything softened at the edges.

  “They were inside,” she whispered.

  “Yes.”

  Her mind raced.

  Something made it happen.

This wasn’t just a passing wonder. Curiosity hit differently here.

A person pushed limits just to see where they stood.

  Pushing closer.

A buzz ran through her palm. The device twitched where she held it.

  Another unknown message.

Only after a pause did she reach for the latch. Then slowly turned the knob.

A single line showed up across the display.

Lost things stay gone. Nothing fills that space again.

  Her blood ran cold.

Foot by foot, her eyes climbed toward Adrian.

“They think I am her,” she whispered.

  He nodded once.

  “And they are not done.”

A weight dropped into the space where words had been. Stillness took root instead of answers. Quiet pressed down like a hand on their shoulders.

Far beyond just looking alike now.

Buried long before, it sat waiting without a sound.

A force strong enough to push foes into shadows. Sometimes silence speaks louder than noise. Hidden steps follow when power shifts unseen. What stirs beneath can change everything without warning.

Heavy air sat low across Elena’s ribs that afternoon. The room seemed to tilt under its own quiet.

That part of her life had already ended.

People started asking what her name really was.

  Her past rewritten.

Out there in the dark, a person had already made up their mind about her - long before she got the chance.

Her eyes met his, words trembling on her lips.

“If I turn out to be your sister, what happens to us?”

Darkness surrounded them, yet his gaze stayed locked on hers.

  “Then everything changes.”

  • A CONTRACT SIGNED IN BLOOD AND DESIRE    The Name They Whispered

Elena did not sleep. Out there beyond the glass, the city glowed faintly through a crack in the curtains. Her old apartment could fit inside this single room, maybe twice. Foot dangling, she stared at the floor - his grin kept flashing behind her eyes. Not confusion. Not hesitation. Recognition. You’re the one they picked, without a doubt. Still hearing Adrian’s voice long after he spoke. The sound stuck around, looping without permission. Words parked themselves behind her thoughts. They showed up again when she least expected. Each time louder than before. A quiet tap sounded on the wood moments past dawn. She stiffened. “It’s me,” came Adrian’s voice, steady and quiet. Up she got, careful and quiet, then turned the handle to let the door swing wide. Still calm, he wore a clean white shirt with black pants. Last night's mess left no mark on him at all. “You should have security outside my door,” she said immediately. “There is.” Her stoma

A gasp escaped Elena, sharp and sudden. Her chest tightened as air fled without warning. The moment hung, brittle. Nothing moved but the silence between heartbeats. “What did you just say?” Fear flickered across her features, Daniel noticing every shift. His gaze held steady, tracing what words left unsaid. Adrian’s voice remained steady on the phone. “The hallway camera on your floor is connected to a private grid. I had access installed after our meeting.” “You put cameras in my building?” she demanded. “I secured the perimeter. That detail is not important right now.” “Not important?” “Elena.” A shift came into his voice, lower now, edged with something tense. “There is a man still inside your apartment.” The room seemed to shrink as her heartbeat thundered through her ears, drowning out everything else. A rush of noise filled her head, leaving little space for anything but the pulse racing inside her chest. Daniel stepped closer. “What is he saying

  • A CONTRACT SIGNED IN BLOOD AND DESIRE    The House Of Glass

Off she went, the door swinging shut behind her - Elena hardly knew she’d stepped outside. Outside Laurent Holdings, the city wore its usual face. Down below, cars rolled between buildings. Sidewalks filled with folks moving fast. Nothing paused, everything kept pace. Yet deep within her thoughts, all had changed. Adopted. The word echoed again and again. It was something Daniel kept to himself. She didn’t know it at all. She found out later they kept it quiet. Not a word came from them before. Funny how Adrian Laurent found it first, without her knowing. Anger clamped down inside her ribs at the idea. Outside the building stood the car Adrian had set up. Without a sound, the driver pulled open the door. She paused before climbing in - like crossing into that seat would lock her into a choice unchangeable. Still, she went ahead. Outside the glass, buildings thinned into driveways behind iron fences. Time stretched thin as she rode through parts of town
