EVELYN
“Beta Evelyn.” a soft voice echoed from the hallway and then the door opened very fast.
A groan answered.
“Karina, I swear if this isn’t about a fire in the pack or a war, I will—.” Evelyn said, as she angrily threw the blanket off her body.
“No, this is not about war, this is more than a war.” Karina said firmly.
She squinted at the light. “If not war then what now? Did the kitchen mess up the Alpha’s precious breakfast again?”
“Your father is back.” Karina said, her voice barely above a whisper, while she opened the wardrobe to pick out a dress for Evelyn.
Evelyn froze, she rolled her eyes and then glared around the room . “What do you mean he is back? Why would he come back so soon?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I don’t know, he came back so quick and called for a meeting, he asked to see the Alpha,” Karina said, her arms crossed tightly over the brown gown she held.
“This must be important, or maybe he already knew about the new Luna.” Evelyn said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Karina nodded, her fingers still on the door of the wardrobe. “I guess he saw the trending video and one more thing.”
“How about you take them one at a time?” Evelyn raised a brow, trying to lighten the mood.
“Leila is back.” Karina said silently.
Evelyn let out a low chuckle. “The Alpha’s arrogant sister? I guess today’s going to be exciting.” She leaned back against the counter, arms folded.
Karina nodded and she brought out a dress and stretched it forward to Evelyn.
“Which dress is this?” Evelyn asked, her gaze not leaving Karina’s hand.
“This is what you are going to put on today, you have to get dressed. You should be beside him, you know even though he has a Luna, you still remain the only Luna we all know.” Karina responded very fast.
Evelyn chuckled “No, I won’t be wearing that, I want a black dress.”
“Okay.” Karina said and then searched for one, as soon as she found one she handed the dress over to Evelyn.
“Good.” Evelyn said and then rushed to the bathroom. Few minutes later she walked back to the room looking so sexy.
Karina cleared her throat “All set?” She asked.
Evelyn nodded and then smiled, they were both smiling and talking when Anna walked in.
“Beta.” She said firmly.
“What?” Evelyn shot back at her, “Why are you here? You are just waking up?” She asked.
Anna nodded slightly and then apologized.
“Be sorry for yourself, you are just a rogue we saved, if you don’t act properly I will dump you in the woods where you came from.” Evelyn shot back at her and then walked out leaving Anna alone in the room.
Karina rushed out too and then whispered to Anna’s ears. “You better get out of her room before she comes back.”
Anna nodded slightly again and then walked out.
Evelyn walked towards the hallway, it was quiet as usual, she walked straight to the pack hall and then she saw her father.
“Father,” she said, her face filled with excitement.
Ronan looked up from his seat at the head of the long table, his expression unreadable, though the corner of his lips tugged into a soft smile. “My dear daughter.”
The entire pack hall, already tense from the urgent elders’ meeting, shifted uncomfortably. They all turned their heads, and they started whispering to each other . But Evelyn wasn’t concerned.
“I missed you Evelyn.” Ronan said, his voice deep and husky.
Evelyn nodded “I know you will.”
Ronan smiled.
And then Evelyn continued. “Father, I know you came here for something but I am here to clear up whatever it is you want to know, you don’t have to blame the alpha for what he did, ” Aria said, her voice was calm. “Something important.”
Ronan gestured toward the front. “Then speak. The floor is yours.”
Zarek wasn’t in the hall. She noticed. That was probably why she had dared to walk in here, thinking she’d have the upper hand with the Alpha gone.
“Where is the Alpha?” Evelyn asked as she glared around the pack hall.
“He will be here soon, you want to tell me something right? Speak now.” Ronan said, his eyes locked on Evelyn.
Evelyn waved her hand, she walked back to where he was sitting and then she sat beside him. “Never mind father, let him come back.”
Few minutes later, the Alpha arrived, he walked in with his loyal confidant.
“I am sorry for coming late, I had some things to sort out.” He apologized, while Evelyn shifted uncomfortably on her seat, she had expected Zarek to come with somebody.
Elder Ronan cleared his throat. “Greetings Alpha.”
“You summoned us, Elder Ronan,” Elder Thomas said, his voice low, his gaze locked on Zarek.
Zarek stepped into the chamber, the heavy wooden doors sounding as they closed behind him. He didn’t respond immediately. He didn’t bow his head. He didn’t soften his gaze either. He simply walked to the head of the long table and stood, his back were straight, his arms clasped behind him.
Ten elders. One Alpha. And no Luna by his side.
“Everyone please sit,” he commanded.
They all sat down except for Elder Ronan, Evelyn’s father.
Zarek didn’t ask him why he didn’t sit, he also didn’t sit because he knew why they came.
“I appointed a new Luna,” he said, calm and clear before they even got to talk.
“You what?” Elder Thomas snapped. His fingers slammed against the table. “Without a formal ceremony? Without our knowledge?”
Zarek’s expression didn’t change. “You weren’t around, some of you weren’t around.”
A murmur echoed across the table. Not from surprise, they had heard the rumors already, but from the fact he dared to confirm it to their faces without inviting them.
Elder Ronan shaked his head.
“My daughter has bled for this pack,” he began, his voice was cool but rising. “When your own warriors turned, she stood between you and death. When you doubted your worth, she defended it in front of us all, because of that incident she lost—-.” He said and then paused, he continued again. “ And this is how you repay her loyalty?”
Zarek’s eyes flicked toward him. “I didn’t reject your daughter, she remains my beta and will always be.”
“No,” Harlan countered, leaning forward. “This is betrayal.”
Everywhere went silent.
Zarek’s voice lowered, dangerous. “I owe no one in this room an explanation for claiming my mate, and I hope you all will stop discussing the Luna issue again.”
“You owe this pack,” Elder Ronan cut in sharply, “You brought in a woman from exile, she was castaway, rejected by her own mate and you named her the pack Luna. With no background. Not even a council vote, most of us weren’t present when you officially named her Luna which is a disrespect to all of us.”
Zarek’s gaze grew colder.
“I’ve watched this council force their Alphas to shred for less,” he said. “But you all forget something. I was chosen by the moon. Your voices are advisory. But mine is final.”
Elder Rowan cleared his throat. “But Alpha.”
“My word is final,” Zarek said, stepping down toward Beta Evelyn, who stood quietly beside her father, pretending she had no idea what they were talking about.
SELENEI heard a knock on the door and then without permission. The door opened and the person walked in.I didn’t bother turning. I was seated at my vanity table, I was half dressed, brushing out the tangles in my hair with slow movements. Afternoon light showed into the room, sharp and gold. Outside, in the pack mansion, a training bell rang twice, midday.I saw his reflection in the mirror before I heard his footsteps.Zarek.He was just standing there, silently watching me.“Didn’t know you’d come,” I said casually, still facing the mirror. “Figured you’d be busy right now.”“I am,” he said, his tone sharp. “But the Luna should be in her office by now.”I stopped brushing my hair. “You are right,” I muttered, placing the brush down. “The Luna.”Zarek stepped further inside, the door closing slowly behind him. “You’ve missed the morning report two days in a row.”“Didn’t know you started counting my attendance because no one told me about this, the same thing happened during the fi
Evelyn couldn’t take it anymore, Zarek didn’t let her father say all his concerns, all he said was that his words were final.“Father.” Evelyn said, her hands clicking the table.Elder Ronan touched her shoulder, assuring her. “Let him go.” “Do something father,” Evelyn said under her breath, her fingers grazing her father’s arm like she wanted him to say something. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to. Her touch alone alerted her father. Elder Ronan looked at her, slow and steady, the silence between them suffocating. He studied her hand, how she moved them, the way she was pretending to stay calm while her entire body vibrated with something close to anger. “…..this is alarming.” One of the elders muttered.Another elder spoke up. “How could he do that? After all the promises he made to Elder Ronan?”“It’s his choice.” Another elder spoke up.Evelyn listened as they all spoke up but they couldn’t do anything, without another word she turned on her heels and walked away

SELENE I sat upright on the bed, hugging my knees, my eyes fixed on the closed door. It was past midnight, and the rest of the pack house was silent, except for the raised voices echoing slightly through the corridor. Then I heard a voice that sounded like Leila’s. I could recognize her voice because she spoke with me earlier.I flinched.“Who are those?” I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper, my tone low and fragile. I didn’t expect an answer. But the maid folding my blanket across the foot of the bed, Brielle, quiet and small-eyed. She paused and then gave a tired sigh.“Don’t mind them,” Brielle muttered. “It happens most of the time. That should be the Alpha’s sister… or maybe she’s quarreling with somebody again.”I blinked. “Again?”Brielle nodded without looking up. “Miss Leila doesn’t tolerate nonsense. Especially not from anyone in the pack, I think her room is being occupied by the beta’s friends.”Another muffled argument echoed across the hallway, loud and full of
ZAREK’s OFFICE “How do you know she has the mark? The mark Selene has could be from any childhood injury.” Leila said, her arms moving as she kept speaking. “You said it yourself, didn't you? Evelyn was the childhood sweetheart you have been searching for.” “That mark on Selene’s neck….” Zarek leaned forward, his elbows on the edge of his desk, his eyes locked on Leila. “It’s not noticeable but I saw it when she packed her hair up, and that mark….she covered that mark with a butterfly tattoo.”Leila shifted uncomfortably in her seat, glancing toward Zarek who sat on the leather armchair beside the window. “I did,” she said finally, her voice low. “It’s identical to the one you used to draw on that girl’s hand when you were kids. The three crescent lines? No one else knew about that.”“No one.” He said firmly.Leila scoffed, not looking up from her phone. “Except Evelyn,” she said flatly. “Zarek, you’ve known Evelyn your whole life. You did that mark on her too. Don’t act like you di
SELENE“What do you mean? What is going on?” Leila asked, her gaze locked on Zarek as he walked away. “I just arrived and this is how you all welcome me? Who is getting on your nerves again?” She asked, her voice loud enough for me to hear.I greeted her and then kept walking, but then I felt a cold and sudden grip on my hand.“Who are you? And where are you rushing to?” She asked.I stopped and then bowed again. “I am Selene, I have to go.” I said, but she wouldn’t let me go.“I asked you who you are, where you are going and all you could say was you are whatever name, you have to go? Do you even know who I am?” Leila said angrily.I didn’t flinch. But my bare feet padded quickly against the cold marble floor, my breath fast and steady because I was running to be able to get to Zarek faster.“I know exactly who you are, Leila,” I said, not turning around.Leila narrowed her eyes. “Then why are you walking past me like I mean nothing in this pack? You’re going to my brother’s quarters
SELENEI didn’t flinch. But inside of me, my stomach twisted. She’d come here to observe training. To understand her new pack. Not to be cornered by the Beta and her followers like prey.“She’s delusional,” whispered another she-wolf who was standing across from us.Before I could say anything, Mara slapped me and said, “How dare you want to compete with the beta?”The others dragged me to my feet and grabbed my hair, pulling my head back, just as the doors opened. The Alpha walked in.His presence alone was scary, commanding and deadly.“How dare you?” His voice dropped like a blade. The girls froze.I stayed on the floor, my hair tangled in Nina’s hand, my cheek still burning from the slap. Then, like it had all been rehearsed, Evelyn’s voice cracked into a sob.“She hit me!” she wailed, pointing at me. “She insulted me! She called me barren and said I was unfit to lead beside you! She said you will never love me”My lips parted, too shocked to speak.Zarek’s eyes narrowed, flicking
SELENEKnock Knock Knock Knock“Luna! Selene!” I sat up from the bed, looking so confused, my hair messy all over my face. I heard the knock again, this time it was harder.“Luna, you have to get up.” I threw off the blanket and walked towards the door, I opened it with sleepy eyes and fast breath. “What in the world happened?”Brielle didn’t wait for me to tell her to walk in, she rushed in herself setting the bed that was roughed by me. “You are supposed to be at the fit ground,” she said very fast. “Training started almost thirty minutes ago.” I blinked. “What training?”“The morning training,” Brielle said, moving to the wardrobe. “Everyone trains including the Alpha. It’s the rules, no one should be left aside.”“Well no one informed me, the Alpha didn’t tell me.” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.“Didn’t you read the files in your office?.” I exhaled sharply. “No I didn’t, I don’t even know if I have an office, wait what time is it now?”“Almost eight, the training st
SELENE“Yea, she is,” Zarek confirmed, his voice firm.“What a twist,” Evelyn said, turning toward me. “We’ll be great friends, won’t we?”My expression was calm. “Yeah.” I said with a wide smile. “I was hoping to make new friends in the pack.”“Great right,” Evelyn said, smiling as she dipped her hand into her bag. “Before I go, I wanted to give you something. A small gift, I didn’t want to hand it over to my maid, I wanted to give you myself as a welcome gift.”She pulled out a small round moon.“The moon,” she said. “Isn’t it beautiful?”I took it hesitantly. “Oh wow, thank you, this is beautiful.”The moment my fingers touched the glass, a strange warmth radiated from it.Zarek stepped closer. “What is it made of?”“Just something I picked up from the eastern coven markets,” Evelyn said breezily. “Blessed by the moon goddess. Supposed to bring peace and strength.”He took it from my hands gently. “Thank you for this but i will have the healer inspect it if you don’t mind.”Evelyn
