SELENE
I sat upright on the bed, hugging my knees, my eyes fixed on the closed door. It was past midnight, and the rest of the pack house was silent, except for the raised voices echoing slightly through the corridor.
Then I heard a voice that sounded like Leila’s. I could recognize her voice because she spoke with me earlier.
I flinched.
“Who are those?” I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper, my tone low and fragile. I didn’t expect an answer.
But the maid folding my blanket across the foot of the bed, Brielle, quiet and small-eyed. She paused and then gave a tired sigh.
“Don’t mind them,” Brielle muttered. “It happens most of the time. That should be the Alpha’s sister… or maybe she’s quarreling with somebody again.”
I blinked. “Again?”
Brielle nodded without looking up. “Miss Leila doesn’t tolerate nonsense. Especially not from anyone in the pack, I think her room is being occupied by the beta’s friends.”
Another muffled argument echoed across the hallway, loud and full of heat.
Brielle straightened the sheets and moved toward the door. “You should try to sleep, Luna.”
I hated the way the title sounded in my ears.
“Don’t call me that, you can just call me Selene.” I said my voice barely above a whisper.
Brielle smiled and then nodded, just as she opened the door, a figure appeared at the entrance of the door.
It was Zarek.
He had been listening to our conversations the whole time.
“Alpha.” Brielle flinched like she had just seen a ghost.
I sighed and then threw the blanket on my legs away, I stepped down from the bed and then walked towards the door.
“You can leave Brielle.” I said and then she nodded.
“Have a goodnight rest Luna.” Brielle said firmly.
I didn’t respond, I just waved my hand and nodded slightly then she left.
I walked back to the bed space and then turned to Zarek, my arms folded to my chest.
“I should be resting now but you came to disrupt my sleep.” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Zarek gently sat on the couch, his shirt opened a little bit and I could see his tattoos.
“I need an honest response from you.” He said, his voice deep and husky.
The room was silent. I could feel his gaze, piercing through me, demanding answers I wasn’t sure I know.
“What?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“The mark on your neck, how did you get it?” he said, his voice deep, his eyes searching mine for any hint of lies.
I raided my hand up instinctively, my fingers brushing against the tender skin where the mark resided. I couldn’t remember how the mark got there, it was a symbol I didn’t recognize, yet it felt… familiar.
“I don’t know,” I admitted, my voice trembling. “I woke up with it, look, I can’t remember okay.”
His expression became neutral, he kept clicking his fingers on the arm of the couch. Then he turned his gaze away, pacing around the room.
“That’s not possible,” he muttered. “Marks like that don’t just appear. They’re given.”
I blinked. “Given? By whom?”
He stopped, facing me again. “Those marks are given by someone powerful. Someone who wants to claim you or someone who is your mate did that to you.”
In our world, marks were sacred, a bond between mates, a symbol of possession. But I hadn’t been claimed. I was rejected by Lucien and he was my only mate.
“But I haven’t…” I stuttered, realizing that what he said might be true. “Are you saying someone marked me without my consent?”
He nodded slightly. “It’s the only explanation.”
I felt a surge of anger. “That’s a violation. Who would do such a thing?”
“You don’t know?” He asked.
I shaked my head slightly. “I don’t.”
“But the mark is appearing again.” He said firmly as he glared at my neck.
I froze for a while, touched my neck and then turned my gaze back to Zarek.
“You marked me? You marked me a few years ago?” She asked.
Zarek nodded slightly and then he smiled, licking his lips like he knew how the mark got there.
“So you did this?” I asked again.
He didn’t say anything, he just stood up. “I protected you, I had no choice. If I didn’t do that you would be dead already.” He said and then walked outside leaving me stunned.
I stood there for a long second, staring at the closed door like it had personally offended me.
“What a damn coward,” I muttered under my breath. Then louder, to no one in particular, “How could he boldly tell me he marked me? And yet he didn’t wait for my response.”
I scoffed and rolled my eyes, crossing my arms.
“Big bad wolf that can’t even handle a real conversation.”
There was no one in the room to hear me, which somehow made it worse.
“Zarek the cold Alpha.” I snorted, the nickname slipping out of my mouth so fast. “Alpha of Ghosting and Brooding.”
I kicked off my shoes, turned off the lights and stumbled on the bed.
I closed my eyes but then I heard a knock on the door, it was low.
“Zarek?”
I said it into the dark, but my voice was very low in the silence. Nobody answered.
The night was becoming strange.
There were no more voices in the hallway, but how come I heard a knock on my door. No faint laughter from the kitchen.
And then I heard a sound.
Low and deep. It wasn’t close, but it wasn’t far either.
A wolf. Then another.
Not loud enough to raise an alarm. Just…a normal sound.
I blinked up at the ceiling, my blanket tangled around my legs. I hadn’t really been sleeping.
I turned my head toward the window, slowly sitting up.
“This pack is something else, lots of warriors and different kinds of wolf scents, this is amazing.” I muttered under my breath.
SELENEI heard a knock on the door and then without permission. The door opened and the person walked in.I didn’t bother turning. I was seated at my vanity table, I was half dressed, brushing out the tangles in my hair with slow movements. Afternoon light showed into the room, sharp and gold. Outside, in the pack mansion, a training bell rang twice, midday.I saw his reflection in the mirror before I heard his footsteps.Zarek.He was just standing there, silently watching me.“Didn’t know you’d come,” I said casually, still facing the mirror. “Figured you’d be busy right now.”“I am,” he said, his tone sharp. “But the Luna should be in her office by now.”I stopped brushing my hair. “You are right,” I muttered, placing the brush down. “The Luna.”Zarek stepped further inside, the door closing slowly behind him. “You’ve missed the morning report two days in a row.”“Didn’t know you started counting my attendance because no one told me about this, the same thing happened during the fi
Evelyn couldn’t take it anymore, Zarek didn’t let her father say all his concerns, all he said was that his words were final.“Father.” Evelyn said, her hands clicking the table.Elder Ronan touched her shoulder, assuring her. “Let him go.” “Do something father,” Evelyn said under her breath, her fingers grazing her father’s arm like she wanted him to say something. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to. Her touch alone alerted her father. Elder Ronan looked at her, slow and steady, the silence between them suffocating. He studied her hand, how she moved them, the way she was pretending to stay calm while her entire body vibrated with something close to anger. “…..this is alarming.” One of the elders muttered.Another elder spoke up. “How could he do that? After all the promises he made to Elder Ronan?”“It’s his choice.” Another elder spoke up.Evelyn listened as they all spoke up but they couldn’t do anything, without another word she turned on her heels and walked away
EVELYN“Beta Evelyn.” a soft voice echoed from the hallway and then the door opened very fast.A groan answered.“Karina, I swear if this isn’t about a fire in the pack or a war, I will—.” Evelyn said, as she angrily threw the blanket off her body.“No, this is not about war, this is more than a war.” Karina said firmly. She squinted at the light. “If not war then what now? Did the kitchen mess up the Alpha’s precious breakfast again?”“Your father is back.” Karina said, her voice barely above a whisper, while she opened the wardrobe to pick out a dress for Evelyn.Evelyn froze, she rolled her eyes and then glared around the room . “What do you mean he is back? Why would he come back so soon?” She asked, her voice barely above a whisper.“I don’t know, he came back so quick and called for a meeting, he asked to see the Alpha,” Karina said, her arms crossed tightly over the brown gown she held.“This must be important, or maybe he already knew about the new Luna.” Evelyn said, her voic

ZAREK’s OFFICE “How do you know she has the mark? The mark Selene has could be from any childhood injury.” Leila said, her arms moving as she kept speaking. “You said it yourself, didn't you? Evelyn was the childhood sweetheart you have been searching for.” “That mark on Selene’s neck….” Zarek leaned forward, his elbows on the edge of his desk, his eyes locked on Leila. “It’s not noticeable but I saw it when she packed her hair up, and that mark….she covered that mark with a butterfly tattoo.”Leila shifted uncomfortably in her seat, glancing toward Zarek who sat on the leather armchair beside the window. “I did,” she said finally, her voice low. “It’s identical to the one you used to draw on that girl’s hand when you were kids. The three crescent lines? No one else knew about that.”“No one.” He said firmly.Leila scoffed, not looking up from her phone. “Except Evelyn,” she said flatly. “Zarek, you’ve known Evelyn your whole life. You did that mark on her too. Don’t act like you di
SELENE“What do you mean? What is going on?” Leila asked, her gaze locked on Zarek as he walked away. “I just arrived and this is how you all welcome me? Who is getting on your nerves again?” She asked, her voice loud enough for me to hear.I greeted her and then kept walking, but then I felt a cold and sudden grip on my hand.“Who are you? And where are you rushing to?” She asked.I stopped and then bowed again. “I am Selene, I have to go.” I said, but she wouldn’t let me go.“I asked you who you are, where you are going and all you could say was you are whatever name, you have to go? Do you even know who I am?” Leila said angrily.I didn’t flinch. But my bare feet padded quickly against the cold marble floor, my breath fast and steady because I was running to be able to get to Zarek faster.“I know exactly who you are, Leila,” I said, not turning around.Leila narrowed her eyes. “Then why are you walking past me like I mean nothing in this pack? You’re going to my brother’s quarters
SELENEI didn’t flinch. But inside of me, my stomach twisted. She’d come here to observe training. To understand her new pack. Not to be cornered by the Beta and her followers like prey.“She’s delusional,” whispered another she-wolf who was standing across from us.Before I could say anything, Mara slapped me and said, “How dare you want to compete with the beta?”The others dragged me to my feet and grabbed my hair, pulling my head back, just as the doors opened. The Alpha walked in.His presence alone was scary, commanding and deadly.“How dare you?” His voice dropped like a blade. The girls froze.I stayed on the floor, my hair tangled in Nina’s hand, my cheek still burning from the slap. Then, like it had all been rehearsed, Evelyn’s voice cracked into a sob.“She hit me!” she wailed, pointing at me. “She insulted me! She called me barren and said I was unfit to lead beside you! She said you will never love me”My lips parted, too shocked to speak.Zarek’s eyes narrowed, flicking
SELENEKnock Knock Knock Knock“Luna! Selene!” I sat up from the bed, looking so confused, my hair messy all over my face. I heard the knock again, this time it was harder.“Luna, you have to get up.” I threw off the blanket and walked towards the door, I opened it with sleepy eyes and fast breath. “What in the world happened?”Brielle didn’t wait for me to tell her to walk in, she rushed in herself setting the bed that was roughed by me. “You are supposed to be at the fit ground,” she said very fast. “Training started almost thirty minutes ago.” I blinked. “What training?”“The morning training,” Brielle said, moving to the wardrobe. “Everyone trains including the Alpha. It’s the rules, no one should be left aside.”“Well no one informed me, the Alpha didn’t tell me.” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.“Didn’t you read the files in your office?.” I exhaled sharply. “No I didn’t, I don’t even know if I have an office, wait what time is it now?”“Almost eight, the training st
SELENE“Yea, she is,” Zarek confirmed, his voice firm.“What a twist,” Evelyn said, turning toward me. “We’ll be great friends, won’t we?”My expression was calm. “Yeah.” I said with a wide smile. “I was hoping to make new friends in the pack.”“Great right,” Evelyn said, smiling as she dipped her hand into her bag. “Before I go, I wanted to give you something. A small gift, I didn’t want to hand it over to my maid, I wanted to give you myself as a welcome gift.”She pulled out a small round moon.“The moon,” she said. “Isn’t it beautiful?”I took it hesitantly. “Oh wow, thank you, this is beautiful.”The moment my fingers touched the glass, a strange warmth radiated from it.Zarek stepped closer. “What is it made of?”“Just something I picked up from the eastern coven markets,” Evelyn said breezily. “Blessed by the moon goddess. Supposed to bring peace and strength.”He took it from my hands gently. “Thank you for this but i will have the healer inspect it if you don’t mind.”Evelyn
