16) even the storm knows

We trudge home trough the thick mud and rain. Silent tears slip from my cheeks. Not for those who were lost but those who still remain. Those who mourn for their loved ones. Mates, fathers, brothers, husbands, sons. I wrap my arms tighter around myself and let out a single soft sob. Hunter silently wraps his arm around my shoulder and tucks me into his side. I don’t let the walls break though. I just lean further into his warmth.

He stops dead and when I look up at him, his eyes are cloudy. When they clear he looks down at me.

“Reece has been looking for you. He’s pissed.” He says flatly. “I’ve been commanded to return you to him in his study.”

“Let him be pissed. There’s more important things than his anger.” I snatch myself from Hunter and continue marching home.

The rain falls like a blanket to cover up the blood, the death, in the forest.
