Chapter 1

"Congratulations, Mr. Luther, for winning the bid for Zack Snow's 'Faraway Mountains' for 500,000 dollars!" the auctioneer called out.

The entire hall erupted in thunderous applause as a spotlight shone on the refined man sitting in the front row.

Julian Luther rose to his feet and personally offered the painting to Rachel Bailey, who was seated next to him.

Rachel's eyes crinkled into crescents as she said, "Thank you, Julian. I didn't expect you to actually bid on the painting just because I casually mentioned that I liked it."

Julian ruffled her hair. "As long as you like it," he said adoringly.

Julian was handsome, and Rachel was beautiful. They were a match made in heaven.

The people around them began to whisper among themselves as they shot envious glances at them.

No one noticed me in the corner, wearing a pair of jeans that had faded from too many washes.

When I couldn't get in touch with Julian, I comforted myself by telling myself that he was simply too busy to pick up my calls. I convinced myself that he was so swamped with work that he had forgotten about me—forgotten how Dad's leg was on the line.

An icy chill settled in my bones as I took in the gentleness glimmering in Julian's eyes.

He wasn't busy, and he hadn't forgotten. He just thought that Dad's leg was far less important than fulfilling the casual wishes of the woman he loved.

My heart hammered in my chest. The pain made it nearly impossible for me to breathe.

Tears welled up in my eyes, but I stubbornly refused to allow them to fall.

Just then, the auctioneer's voice echoed around the hall again.

"Our next item is 'Dawn Light', a pearl necklace that was crafted by the famous jewelry designer, Ms. Wanda Tillson, before her death. The starting bid is 300,000 dollars."

"Dawn Light" was the last thing that Mom left for me before she passed away. She told me that it represented hope and served as a reminder that the sun would always rise, no matter how dark the night was.

I would never put it up for auction unless I was forced to. Unfortunately, at that moment, I had no other choice.

I looked past the crowd and made eye contact with Julian.

It was obvious that he had recognized the pearl necklace. The gentle expression on his face stiffened and was replaced by shock.

Following his line of sight, Rachel also looked in my direction. She fixed an expression of faux surprise on her face when she saw me, covering her mouth with her hand.

"What are you doing here, Cece? Didn't Mrs. Mendez leave that necklace for you after she passed away? Why are you auctioning it off?"

Everyone directed their attention to me.

An icy expression appeared on Julian's face. He strode toward me until he was standing right before me.

I was completely enveloped by his tall and broad figure.

His voice was colored with disappointment when he asked, "Do you need money that badly, Cecilia Mendez?"

With Ethan's help, we managed to track down one of the judges from the design competition—a retired professor. At first, the professor refused to meet us. He also promised to keep the professor safe. The professor told us that "Galaxy" was indeed my original design. However, the day before the results were announced, Rachel personally sought him out. She threatened his family's safety and forced him to present first prize to her.It was just that Rachel's submission was too unpresentable. To save face, she hired someone to fabricate the drafts that became the so-called evidence of my plagiarism. The truth had come to light.Ethan immediately scheduled a press conference.I presented the recording of the professor's statement and the conclusive evidence of Rachel's fabricated drafts before the media.A single stone that dropped in the wate

Dad was rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, after the doctor treated him, his life was no longer in danger. The doctor explained that he had suddenly fainted due to anxiety and malnutrition and needed lots of rest to regain his strength.I kept vigil by Dad's bedside. Sleep eluded me for the rest of the night as I gazed at his haggard face. When dawn broke on the horizon, Ethan entered the ward, bringing breakfast with him."You should eat something, Ms. Mendez," he said as he placed the food on the bedside cabinet."Thank you," I said.I grabbed the food, but I had no appetite. So instead, I looked at Ethan and asked the question that had been gnawing at me. "We don't know each other, Mr. Grant. Why are you helping me?"Ethan fell silent for a few moments before he slowly replied, "Because I have a score to settle with the Luther family."It turned out that Ethan's father and Frederick used to be business partners. They worked together and built their company from the ground

The night market was already in a state of chaos when I finally rushed over. The small stall that Dad had meticulously set up for the past few days had been completely wrecked. The old sewing machine that Mom had left behind had also been destroyed. It was just a pile of scrap metal now.Dad was sitting on the ground with a lifeless look in his eyes.I rushed over to him and kneeled by his side. I tried to help him back up on his feet, but he refused to let go of the bundle of parts."It's gone, Cece… Everything's gone… The memories that your mother left for us… They're all gone…" he mumbled hoarsely as tears spilled down his cheeks. My heart felt like it was being torn apart. Blood flowed profusely from the gaping wound.I raised my head and looked past the crowd, spotting Julian who was standing a short distance away.He was still holding that black umbrella and seemed to be oblivious to the way that the rain was drenching the hem of his pants. His face was devoid of emotion

I whipped my head up to look at Julian after I hung up. "Dad's stall. You hired someone to wreck it, didn't you, Julian? I know that you still hate me."I looked up and clearly saw the way he averted his gaze.Time seemed to turn back at that moment, bringing me back to another rainy night ten years ago.I didn't have a care in the world at the time. My biggest worry was how to hide the innocent crush that I had on Julian, who was my best friend, Jillian's brother. When Jillian turned 18, she wanted to know what it was like to visit a bar, so she secretly snuck out and went to one.Jillian and I had already made plans to watch a movie. However, she didn't show up, no matter how long I waited. Feeling panicked, I began questioning all of my friends before I finally learned where she had gone. When I made it to the alley behind the bar, I saw a nightmarish scene that would haunt me for the rest of my life.Jillian was surrounded by a group of hooligans. Her clothes were dishevel

I gave up on struggling at that moment.I closed my eyes and allowed the tears to spill down my cheeks. My arm was turned into a bloody mess.It turned out that Julian had always loathed me. He hated me so much that he wanted to see me dead.…I strolled into a pharmacy and bought a roll of bandages. I then carelessly wrapped them around my arm. When I dragged my exhausted body back home, I found Dad carefully wiping down an old sewing machine."What are you doing, Dad?" I asked hoarsely as I approached him.Dad looked up at me. His wrinkly face broke into a smile as he exclaimed, "You're back, Cece! Look, I've fixed up this useful little thing. I was thinking that we could set up shop at the night market to earn a bit of cash from fixing and altering people's clothes."My heart felt like it was being stabbed by needles as I looked at the hopeful glint in his eyes. I didn't want him to know that I had been fired from the cafe. I didn't want him to worry about me again.I nodd
