“She’s a witch…”

“I can’t believe she’s still alive, the Alpha is too merciful, he should’ve beheaded her…”

“I can’t wait for the Alpha to punish her, we both know he’s not that merciful…” Three maids burst into laughter as they gossiped about me like I wasn’t in the same kitchen with them.

We were all preparing lunch and although we were supposed to wash and chop all the vegetables together, I had been isolated at one side with a pot of vegetables to chop.

“We all know she’s still alive because the Alpha feels she’s too skinny to be eaten… I’m sure he’s fattening the cow for the slaughter.”

“It was funny, I heard her screaming and the first thing I wanted to do was shut her out, if I had done that, maybe her corpse would’ve been taken away…” The maid I shared a room with explained and everyone burst into laughter.

I bit my lips, pushing back tears that threatened to spill. I had done nothing wrong yet they were so cruel to me.

I tried very hard to stop myself from listening to their words but the previous words couldn’t stop plaguing my mind.

All I could hear was their taunting laughter, I could see their scornful faces and my heart felt tight and I just wanted to get away from all these.

“Do you think we have all day? Can’t you go any faster?” My roommate sneered while the remaining two rolled their eyes and hissed.

“We’re going out and you better be done by the time we’re back!” She warned and without a word, they walked out.

I exhaled deeply, trying very hard to cut the vegetables faster but the pain in my heart made my body numb.

I was weak, my heart was bleeding terribly and my vision began to blur as tears welled up in my eyes. I used a hand to wipe away the tears when I sniffed the air.

It felt different, there was another force in the room and I turned around, my eyes widening immediately.

Alpha Damien was standing at the door post, staring at me with his dark compelling eyes and I looked down, I dared not make the mistake of staring into his eyes.

I was trembling slightly and the knife I was holding slipped out of my hand, falling with a loud noise but I was too scared to pick it up.

He took a few strides towards me and I shrank back, wishing I could force myself into the cabinet while trying to still my pounding heart.

My mind was a mess, my head was throbbing and I began to shiver on the spot as sweat and goosebumps broke out.

“Why? Can’t you look at me again?” He demanded as his hands wound around my neck. I shook my head vigorously, unable to say a word as I began to hyperventilate.

“Are you scared? Didn’t you stare at me that night? Didn’t you stare at my wolf? Have you lost your courage?” His voice sounded like thunder and I winced with each word that came out.

I was slightly shaking my head, pleading in my mind for the goddess to save me.

“Oh really? Do you need me to remind you? Have you forgotten how you screamed and pleaded for me not to kill you?” He whispered, his lethal voice laced with mockery and I flinched.

The scene played in my head and I shook more, unable to get the image of his bloodstained claws out of my head.

I wailed quietly, biting my lips to stop myself from making any sound, I didn’t want to infuriate him.

“Can’t you speak! Tongue tied now!” He barked, lifting my chin up roughly as he forced me to look at him but I shut my eyes tightly, tears spilling as I whimpered quietly, still trembling while my hands clung to my sides tightly, holding onto the hem of my dress nervously.

For a few seconds he didn’t say a word and I was tempted to open my eyes but I shut them even tighter.

I flickered my eyes open the moment his hands left my neck, he released me weakly and I staggered back, panting heavily with my chest rising.

Without a word, he walked out, leaving me stunned as to what was happening.

I glided to the ground immediately, my knees were too weak to hold me and I couldn’t stop sobbing.

“Why me? Why do I always have to be different? Why does my life keep getting worse with each passing day?” I whispered to myself as I sobbed away the sorrow in my heart.

Nothing I did was good enough, my life became a nightmare ever since the day my father died, having a wolf and mate which I thought was my way of escaping this cruelty of the world turned out to be a big joke when I turned 20 and still get no sign of a wolf.

I was 21 now and I had given up, my hopes of having a wolf or mate were completely crushed and with me working in this pack, I was closer to death than I ever was to having a good life.

“I may be late but I’ll always be here for you, Nora…” I heard a voice mumble inside of me and I jolted with fear.

My heart raced heavily as I looked around, trying to wonder if anyone had spoken to me but I was alone in the huge kitchen.

“Who… Who are you and where are you…” I muttered, looking around cautiously. It could be one of the maids trying to mess with me.

“I’m Nyx, your wolf…” I heard the softest whisper and my eyes almost popped out in shock.

“Argh!” I yelled with all my might? My hands placed on my face firmly and I shut my eyes, shaking my head vigorously.

This was a dream! It wasn’t real… Someone was messing with me… How… I…

“I… I… have a wolf… This is some joke… Is someone messing with my head? Is this real? Am I hallucinating?” I asked myself repeatedly and she giggled.

“No, silly. I’m your wolf, I’ve always been with you, right from when you turned 10…” She announced and I froze in shock.

“You’ve been with me for the past 11 years, why haven’t you ever said a word to me? Comfort me or try to help me?” I asked, the thought of having someone yet being lonely overwhelming me.

“That’s a story for the future, you have a lot coming your way, Nora. I just hope you’re prepared…” She said, sadness was visible in her voice.

“What are you talking about… Nyx… Nyx… Please don’t leave me! Nyx…” I called but got no response. I felt anxious for a moment as I thought she had disappeared but her soothing and warm presence filled the air and I exhaled with relief.

I have a wolf and that’s all that matters to me now… Having a wolf now meant I could find my mate and who knows, maybe my mate could be a member of this pack…. And who knows, maybe he could’ve been waiting for me, all his life….
