The police officer ignored them and continued, reading her Miranda rights to her.
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you can afford an attorney. If you can't afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.”
As the police put Sonia in handcuffs, Rose’s phone rang.
“Oh that's probably Austin,” Rose said to herself, with relief.
The doctor handed her the phone.
She got more curious when she saw “No caller ID,” but she picked up.
“Hello?”
A deep, cold voice came in:
“You bitch! I knew you were not dead.”
“Who are you?” Rose shouted, putting the phone on speaker.
“I might have messed up that operation, but trust me, next time I get you, I'm taking your head.”
“Who are you?” Rose yelled again.
He chucked. “Sorry, two heads, actually.
Yours and that dumbass woman who saved your life.”
He cut the call instantly.
All of them in the room heard the conversation, and the room went silent for a while.
“Get this thing off me!” Sonia yelled at the police officer as he removed the handcuffs from her wrists.
“I’m sorry, ma,” he apologized.
“That‘s how y’all go around arresting innocent people. Please, get out of here!” Sonia yelled again.
“Ma, you need to tone it down. This is a hospital, we have patients in other rooms. And, officer, Please leave now,” the doctor ordered.
The police officer left immediately.
“Nurse!” The doctor called the nurse nearby.
“Please, continue with the test. I need to attend to another patient.”
“Okay” the nurse replied as the doctor left.
“How are you doing?” she asked Rose.
“I’m good. Thank you so much for saving my life. I’m Rose parks.”
“I’m Sonia Martin.” They shook hands as they introduced themselves.
“But what really happened? Why would someone want to kill me? I offered him money, but he refused,” Rose asked in confusion.
“He wasn't trying to kill you or rob you. In fact, your items are intact. He was targeting your baby,” Sonia answered.
“But why?” Rose responded.
“Did you hurt anyone, or are you connected with a gang?” Sonia asked her.
“No,” Rose responded.
“Well, he was focused on your belly, and I noticed he was trying to force some abortion pills into your throat. That was when I used force to hit him with the umbrella.”
Immediately Rose heard this, she took her phone to reach out to Austin.
Sonia kept explaining what happened, but Rose wasn't paying attention. Out of fear for their baby, she quickly dialed Austin’s number to send him a message, then remembered that Austin had blocked her line.
“Oh yes,” Rose said with relief, remembering, she had another SIM card in her purse.
“Sorry, is there any problem?” Sonia asked her.
“No, I need to text someone,” Rose replied as she exchanged the SIM card in her phone.
“Is it your husband?” Sonia asked out of curiosity.
Rose ignored her as she typed a message on her phone.
“Hey, it's Rose. I was attacked by a masked man. I think I'm in great danger. I have no idea why someone would want to hurt me or our baby. I passed out due to the attack, but I'm stable now. But, with the reactions from the doctor, I don't think our baby survived. Please, I need you right now, I'm at the Avenue Hospital.”
She sent the message.
“Rose, have you even been listening? The nurse is asking you a question.” Sonia asked, tapping her arm gently.
“Yes, yes,” Rose answered, confused and lost.
“What’s your blood group? You've lost so much blood and we need someone to donate for you. Any relatives?” the nurse asked.
“I’m O positive, and I've got no one,” Rose replied.
“What of your husband or father of the child? Isn't that who you were texting?” Sonia asked her.
Rose went silent and didn't respond.
“I’ll donate, I'm O positive too,” Sonia offered.
“Are you sure?” the nurse asked Sonia.
“Yes,” Sonia answered.
The nurse left quickly to prepare for the donation.
“Why are you doing all this, please?” Rose asked, feeling emotional.
Sonia sighed. “Well, let’s just say, you know the worth of something you don't have.”
“Awww, I'm so sorry.” Rose held her hands, feeling very sorry for her.
“I’ve been married for eight years now, No kids,” Sonia said, and she burst into tears.
“I couldn't watch him do that to you. Having longed for a child for so long, losing a child like that would be an unforgettable pain you'd blame yourself for. I really have faith and believe your baby is fine,” Sonia said, rubbing the tears from her eyes.”
Rose held her hand tightly, “I'm sorry about how you feel. Everything will work out well for you in due time, you just have to have faith.”
“Well, let’s cheer and drink to faith,” Sonia said, cleaning her eyes and chuckling.
“What are we going to drink in this boring hospital?” Rose smiled.
“Oh, they're here to take my blood, we’ll drink and cheer with that,” Sonia said sarcastically, as the nurse entered.
They both laughed.
“I apologize if this might change your mood, but don't you have any family or relatives who are aware of what just happened to you?” Sonia asked with curiosity.
Rose went silent again and remembered Austin. She checked her phone again, nothing from him.
“Expecting a call from someone?” Sonia asked.
“No,” she answered as the doctor came inside the room.
“Doctor, any update?” She panicked immediately.
“Ma’am, congratulations, your baby is perfectly fine, despite the internal bleeding but…”
“Yes!” they both screamed at the same time, not allowing him to finish.
“But, you’re really weak and you need to rest until we transfuse some blood into your system,” the doctor finished his sentence.
“Please, miss, follow me, let’s get your blood quickly,” the doctor instructed Sonia.
“Yes, I knew it! Congratulations, Rose,” Sonia said as she rubbed Rose’s stomach. “So, we're gonna have a baby?” She added as she followed the doctor.
Out of excitement, Rose quickly dialed Austin’s number to break the news to him that their baby was safe.
The phone rang, and immediately Austin picked up the call, he yelled:
“What do you want from me, woman? I got your message, and I really don't care if the baby’s gone. Deal with it.”
He hung up.
Her heart sank instantly, and tears rushed down her eyes slowly.
Austin assumed the baby was dead and he called Robin immediately.
“Hello, boss,” Robin answered.
“Nice job done, she lost the baby, and that's exactly what I wanted. Come to my office by evening to collect double of what I promised.”
He hung up immediately.
Rose received another call, she felt a little hope again.
“Oh, maybe Austin has come back to his senses,” she thought to herself.
She looked at the phone and saw what she wasn't expecting.
“No caller ID” again. She panicked right away and her heart beat faster.
Sonia knew she had messed up.“Frank, I can explain," she cried.“Explain what? You applied for the position of a director in your office and you didn’t tell me?” “Frank, I didn’t know how to tell you.”“Austin offered me the position and told me to send my application."“Oh, Austin now? No more boss, you call him by his name now?”“Frank, I wanted to tell you, but I knew what it would look like.”“Hold on. Let me understand. He told you to apply for director? “Yes, Frank.” “Is there any other person applying for that post?”“Erm,” she stuttered. He let out a bitter laugh. “Nevermind. I have my answer already.” *A few weeks earlier- (FLASHBACK)Austin had called her into his office.“Good morning, Sonia. Please, feel free and have a seat.”Sonia sat and smoothed her skirt. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and smiled.“Sonia, I know what you’re trying to do,” Austin said, watching her.She smiled wider. “Really? I’m not doing anything, or do you just lose it whenever you
“Leave me alone, Frank! I’ve vowed never to argue with you again. Why do you keep getting mad for every single thing?” “Because I don’t trust you anymore. I don’t even know the wife I married,” Frank yelled.“Oh, you don’t trust me? All because I travelled with my boss? That’s the grudge you’ve been holding against me?”“No, you don’t get it. Sonia, you’ve changed completely.”“Changed? Sonia shot back. “No, I didn't change. You changed from the day I entered that jet to San Francisco.”“Check yourself, Sonia. I’m clearly not the problem here.” “Oh, you think you’re not the problem? Ever since I got back, you always return home late, you always ignore me whenever I try to have a conversation with you.”He sighed deeply, “Please, I’m too tired for this.”Rose had overheard the argument. The last few weeks after Sonia’s return from San Francisco had been heated. Arguments over minor issues, insults upon insults. The home was no fun.Frank was jealous, especially noticing how Sonia alw
She rolled her gown back down.“Austin, stop,” she whispered. His grip was firm. As she straightened her back, his lips were around her neck. “Do you want me to kiss you slowly?” he asked.Sonia’s mind screamed push him away, yet her body said otherwise. “Austin, please, not here,” she whispered.“If not here, where else? In front of the mayor?“ he teased.“Austin. No,” she whispered again. His hands were still around her waist.“You finally stopped calling me sir, and you expect me to leave you now?” Sonia laughed. He rolled up her gown again, and this time, she gave in. She wore a silk slip under that showed off her hips.He reached for her neck and kissed her.“Austin, I love it,” she moaned.“Call me daddy, if not I’ll stop,” he teased again.Sonia laughed. “Daddy, please don’t stop.”He chuckled. “Good girl.”Frank didn’t kiss her. He was flirting with her when he sensed her urge to kiss him. Sonia couldn’t resist him any longer, she turned to him and kissed him slowly. She lo
They both jumped apart.Robin stepped inside, lowering his head as though he hadn’t seen anything.”“I’m so sorry, boss.” Austin frowned. “How dare you barge into my office like that?”“Boss. You called for me, so I thought it was urgent.”“I don’t care! You don’t barge into my office like that!” Austin barked.“I’m sorry boss.”“Please, excuse us, Sonia.”Sonia left the office quietly.Austin turned to Robin. “We have a flight to San Francisco tomorrow.”“Yes, boss,” Robin replied firmly.“So get ready.”“Yes sir. Got it.”“Now leave my sight!” Austin snapped.“Hey, come back here.” he called him back.“How many years have you been working for me now?” Austin asked.“About twenty years now sir.”“Good. And you know you’re the only one I trust among my bodyguards right?”“Yes, sir,” his voice firm.Austin’s voice dropped, sharp and threatening. “Anytime I hear you run your mouth about anything, I’ll slice you into pieces and feed you to my dogs.”“Yes sir,” Robin answered, his tone d
After the celebration, Rose couldn’t sleep. The threat from Austin scared her.“What if he finds out about T?” She whispered.Tyler turned to her.“Mommy, why are you talking to yourself?” he asked.“T, I thought you were asleep.”“No, I can’t sleep.”“Why, sweetheart?”“I wish my daddy was there when I was on stage,” Tyler said, looking concerned.“Oh, really? Rose asked, thinking of what to tell him.“Yes. Olivia’s dad or mom wasn’t there either. Does that mean they abandoned her?”“We don’t know about that, only Olivia knows that.”“When I see her, I’ll ask,” Tyler whispered."No, T. That’s a sensitive issue and you have to be careful.”“Okay Mom. But you said my dad didn’t stay. Why didn’t he stay?” Rose sighed. “T, your dad is a bad man.”“What makes him bad?”“T, it’s late. You have school tomorrow and you need to go to bed early.”Tyler jerked up from the bed “No, Mummy!” His tone changed.”Rose froze, shocked by his reaction.“You promised to tell me when I’m older.”Rose kne
Tyler's voice grew closer as he drew closer. “Mommy!” he kept calling.“Tyler, wait!” Olivia shouted. She grabbed him arm, pulling him back. “I need to see my mom,” Tyler insisted.“No, we’re supposed to stay with the winners. If we leave, someone could take our spot. Do you want Francis to take your spot like he almost did?“No!” Tyler said quickly.“So, let’s run back before anyone notices.”Rose breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Olivia pull him back. “If I see you anywhere close, I’ll kill you,” Austin warned coldly. He and Robin entered the car and they zoomed off.Rose hurried to Tyler. When he broke the news, she couldn’t hold back her joy. “Out of the thirty who participated, you guys came second.” She hugged him tightly, her tone filled with pride.“She took pictures of Tyler and Olivia together before the host’s voice rang out “Parents or guardians of the winners, please fill in your children's detailshere for the prize.” He handed Rose a sheet.“Where’s your Mommy?”
