Mica pov

The doctor's words echoed inside my head.

*She doesn't have much time.*

No.

No.

This couldn't be happening.

My legs refused to move as the doctor pushed open the ICU door.

The steady rhythm of the heart monitor filled the room.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

It was too slow. Too weak. Too... final.

The scent of antiseptic burned my nose as I stepped inside.

My heart shattered.

"Ophelia..."

She looked so small.

My sister, who had always seemed larger than life, was buried beneath white hospital sheets, tubes snaking from her arms, oxygen resting beneath her nose. Her usually rosy cheeks were pale, and her lips had lost their color.

Yet she smiled.

She actually smiled.

"There you are," she whispered.

My vision blurred.

I rushed to her bedside, taking her cold hand between both of mine.

"Don't..." My voice broke. "Don't scare me like this."

She chuckled softly. "Oh, Little Bean."

My chest tightened.

Little Bean. She hadn't called me that in years.

"You still cry too easily."

A sob escaped me. "I'm not crying."

"You've always been a terrible liar."

I laughed through my tears. "I hate you."

"No, you don't."

"No..." I pressed my forehead against her hand. "I really don't."

A warm hand settled on the other side of the bed.

Nyric.

He lowered himself onto one knee beside her, carefully brushing a strand of hair away from her face.

"My love."

The tenderness in his voice made my throat ache. I'd never heard Alpha Nyric Ashcroft sound like that. Not the feared Alpha King. Not the billionaire CEO.

Just a husband.

Ophelia reached up weakly, touching his cheek.

"You need a haircut."

Nyric let out a breath that almost sounded like a laugh. "You've been saying that for months."

"And you keep ignoring me."

"I was waiting for you to nag me again."

"I am nagging you."

His lips curved into the smallest smile. "Yes, you are."

For one impossible moment, everything felt normal.

Like we'd go home after this.

Like Ophelia would complain about the hospital food. Like she'd make Nyric carry her bridal style to the car because she claimed walking was overrated. Like she'd make me cook dinner while secretly stealing food from Nyric's plate because she insisted it tasted better.

Maybe the doctors were wrong.

Maybe she'd be okay.

"I don't like everyone looking so miserable," Ophelia murmured. She looked between us. "You two still can't stand each other?"

Nyric and I answered at the same time.

"No."

"Yes."

We turned to glare at each other.

Ophelia laughed. A real laugh. It filled the room with warmth.

"I knew it. My two favorite stubborn people."

"I'm not stubborn," Nyric said.

I stared at him. "You've got to be kidding."

"See?" Ophelia said, eyes shining. "This is what I've missed."

The words were so soft I almost didn't hear them.

My smile faded.

"You're coming home," I whispered. "We'll argue again tomorrow."

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Nyric.

Then at me.

Her smile became sad.

"I wish that were true."

The room went silent.

"No," I said immediately. "No."

"Mica—"

"No."

I shook my head over and over. "We'll find another specialist."

"We already did."

"We'll go overseas."

"I've been everywhere."

"There has to be something."

"There isn't."

The heart monitor suddenly sped up.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Ophelia's breathing grew uneven.

"Doctor!" I shouted.

The door burst open as nurses rushed inside. One adjusted her oxygen. Another checked the monitors.

Nyric stood so abruptly his chair crashed to the floor.

"What's happening?"

"Her heart is under severe stress," the doctor said quickly.

"Ophelia."

She reached out blindly. "Nyric..."

He immediately took her hand. "I'm here."

Then she searched with her other hand.

"Mica."

I grabbed it before she finished speaking. "I'm here too."

She squeezed our hands with surprising strength.

"Listen to me."

"No."

"Mica."

"No."

Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.

"You promised you'd watch my children grow up."

Pain flickered across her face. "I know."

"You promised we'd grow old together."

"I wanted to."

"You promised..."

"I know." Her voice cracked. "I know."

Silence settled over the room.

Then she looked at us. One after the other.

"I need you to promise me something."

Nyric shook his head before she could continue. "Absolutely not."

"You don't even know what I'm going to ask."

"I know that look."

She smiled weakly. "You always do."

She took a shaky breath.

"If I don't survive..."

"Stop."

"...I don't want my dream to die with me."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

Tears rolled down her cheeks. "I always wanted to give Nyric a family."

My stomach twisted.

"But I can't."

The room became impossibly still.

She looked at me. "Mica..."

My pulse pounded.

"...I want you to become Nyric's surrogate."

Everything inside me stopped.

"What?"

"I've already spoken to my doctor."

"No."

"I've prepared everything."

"No!"

I stumbled away from the bed. "You can't ask me that!"

"I have to."

"No!"

"Mica—"

"He's your husband!"

"And always will be in my heart."

"Then don't ask this of me!"

She looked at Nyric. "My love..."

He was already shaking his head. "I won't do it."

"Nyric."

"I said no."

"If I'm gone—"

"I won't replace you."

"You never could."

His voice cracked. "There is no one else."

She smiled sadly. "I'm not asking you to replace me."

She turned back to me, tears shining in her eyes.

"I'm asking you to protect the family we never got to have."

I couldn't breathe. "I can't."

"You can."

"I'll hate myself."

"You won't."

"I'll never forgive myself."

She reached for me again. "Little Bean..."

My heart broke.

"You're the only person I trust with the two things I love most."

Her eyes found Nyric. "He's one."

Then they returned to me. "Our child is the other."

"I..."

"I can't lose both."

The monitor screamed.

BEEEEEEEEEP!

"She's crashing!" a nurse shouted.

Doctors rushed forward. The room erupted into chaos. Someone grabbed my shoulders, pulling me back.

The last thing I saw before the doctors surrounded Ophelia...

...was her lips moving.

One word.

"Promise..."

  • A SURROGATE FOR MY SISTER'S ALPHA HUSBAND   45: Coming Home

MicaNyric posted extra guards at the gates that night, and though he tried to keep his concern from showing too plainly in front of me, I recognized the particular tightness in his jaw that meant he was taking the unfamiliar car far more seriously than his careful reassurances suggested."It's probably nothing," he said, settling into bed beside me hours later than usual, his own restlessness obvious despite the words. "A reporter, most likely. Or someone lost.""You don't believe that.""I believe in being cautious regardless of what I believe." He pulled me gently against him, one hand resting protectively over my stomach the way it often did now. "Try to sleep. The guards will radio if anything changes."I didn't sleep well, drifting in and out of shallow, anxious dreams, and when I finally woke to gray morning light, I found Nyric already gone from the bed, his side cold enough to suggest he'd been up for some time.I found him in the entryway, still in yesterday's clothes, Ethan

  • A SURROGATE FOR MY SISTER'S ALPHA HUSBAND   44: Fragile Peace

MicaThe weeks after the scare passed more gently than I expected, settling into a rhythm that felt, for the first time since Ophelia's death, almost peaceful.Nyric had grown quieter in a way I couldn't quite name — not distant, exactly, but thoughtful, like he was turning something over privately that he wasn't ready to share yet. I didn't push. I'd learned, months ago now, that some things needed their own time to surface.By the time the third trimester arrived, my body had changed enough that I could no longer pretend any of this was still theoretical. My stomach had grown round and undeniable, the baby's movements no longer faint flutters but full, insistent kicks that sometimes woke me in the middle of the night."He's active tonight," I said one evening, wincing as a particularly strong kick landed just beneath my ribs."He?" Nyric raised an eyebrow from across the sitting room, setting down the book he'd been only half reading. "Dr. Reyes confirmed that?""No. I just have a f

  • A SURROGATE FOR MY SISTER'S ALPHA HUSBAND   43: "What were you praying for?"

NyricI finally let go of her hand somewhere near the estate gates, only because navigating the final turn required both hands on the wheel, and even then, the moment I'd parked, I reached for it again almost immediately, some instinct refusing to fully release the contact."You're going to need both hands eventually," Mica said, amusement threading through her voice despite the exhausting morning we'd just survived."Eventually. Not yet."She let me hold on a while longer, and I was grateful, more grateful than I could easily explain, for her patience with whatever this particular need actually was. That evening, once she'd retreated upstairs for an early rest, exhausted from the emotional weight of the day, I found myself alone in the study, the echoes of the appointment still sitting heavy in my chest.Ethan found me there sometime after dinner, a bottle of whiskey between us that neither of us had touched yet."How is she?" he asked, settling into the familiar chair across from my

MicaNeither of us slept much that night.I lay awake listening to the quiet of the house, one hand resting protectively over my stomach, cataloguing every small sensation with the particular hypervigilance fear brings, searching for some sign that everything was fine, or some confirmation that it wasn't.Nyric appeared at my door sometime past three in the morning, unable to sleep either, and rather than retreat to his own restless solitude, he simply sat in the chair beside my bed until dawn, neither of us speaking much, both of us grateful not to be facing the uncertainty alone. The drive to the clinic felt endless, morning traffic crawling past at a pace that made the anxiety in my chest tighten further with every passing minute."Whatever it is," Nyric said, reaching over to take my hand as we finally pulled into the clinic parking lot, "we face it together. However difficult, however frightening. Together.""Together," I repeated, needing to hear myself say it, needing the word

  • A SURROGATE FOR MY SISTER'S ALPHA HUSBAND   41: Interrupted

MicaNeither of us spoke for a long moment after he stopped himself, the unfinished word hanging between us like something physical, something I could almost reach out and touch if I tried."It's okay," I finally said, though it wasn't entirely true, some part of me aching with the particular frustration of standing at the edge of understanding without quite crossing over. "You don't have to say it before you're ready.""I want to." His voice was rough, unguarded in a way I rarely saw from him. "I want to say it, Mica. I just don't know how to make it mean what it needs to mean without also acknowledging everything it changes, everything it asks of both of us, and I'm terrified of getting that wrong.""Then don't say the word yet. Just—" I hesitated, some instinct pulling me forward despite every reasonable caution I should have been exercising. "Just let me understand what you're feeling, even without the word attached to it."He looked at me, something shifting in his expression, th

  • A SURROGATE FOR MY SISTER'S ALPHA HUSBAND   40: Almost the Word

Nyric"Come inside," I said, gesturing toward the study, unwilling to have the rest of this conversation standing in a hallway where any passing member of staff might overhear something I wasn't ready for anyone else to witness.Mica followed, settling into the familiar chair across from my desk, and I closed the door behind us, giving us the privacy this conversation clearly deserved."Tell me everything," she said. "Not the summary. What actually happened in that room."I sat down slowly, gathering my thoughts, aware that whatever I said next would either deepen the trust we'd been carefully rebuilding or fracture it further if I chose my words poorly."Blackthorn wanted a formal statement," I began. "Something that would clarify the arrangement publicly — confirm the pregnancy, explain the surrogacy, put an end to the speculation before it grows into something worse. He believes silence is giving the rumors more power than the truth would.""And you refused.""I refused because the
