"How many crates?" Russell asked as he sucked on his Cuban cigar, shrewd gaze taking in the van that was being offloaded.

"Ten. There are six containing military level, untraceable machinery, while the others have your crystals." I replied.

His mouth curved into an excited smile. "Excellent. I knew doing business with you was the right call."

I nodded in agreement.

Russell suddenly glanced over at me, one eyebrow cocked. "You know, Santiago, you could make a whole lot more money if you dappered in the flesh business. All the big league gangs and operations have shares and influence in the_"

"I don't deal in people." I cut him off coldly.

A rule I’d bled for. One I wouldn’t break, no matter what rumors said.

He smirked, looking undeterred. "So you say, but that's not what I hear."

"Oh?" I asked, trying to keep my irritation off my face.

He pulled his cigar out and blew smile into the air while rubbing a hand over his chin. Russell was old-school crime—Godfather fantasie

Rafael"And then she fell off the fire escape." Tony concluded his report. By then, my jaw was already clenched so tight that it was a miracle my teeth hadn't cracked and shattered. Trading guns and drugs while trying to keep up the facade of the perfect, philanthropic business man was nothing compared to trying to keep that foolhardy cop out of harm's way. For the millionth time, I asked myself why I even cared. It would be far easier to sit back and watch her dig her own grave. By the look of things, she was already half way done with the digging anyway. So why had I hired someone to babysit her? Tony's skills were costing me a pretty penny and he was probably confused as to why he was being made to watch over an FBI agent. He was a top rated and sought after mercenary, not a bodyguard. "Is that all?" I asked. He shrugged, looking bored. "The police spoke to her, combed through her building and my location on the rooftop across from hers." "Good. Continue trailing her." I sai

Nina "I can't believe Paul let you go there!" My best friend hissed over the phone as I trudged home from work the night after our near death experience at The Sprawl. "Let me?" I scoffed. "I don't need Paul's permission. I'm a full grown_" "Don't you dare say adult, because no self preservating adult in their right senses would go anywhere within a ten mile radius of that place." Katy spat out the last word like calling it a place was an affront on it's own. I cursed myself silently for even letting it slip that I had gone to The Sprawl. In my defense, Katy was as persuasive as they came. She was a living lie detector. I had tried to steer the conversation in a million different directions but she had kept on pressing till the truth had come tumbling out. "Katy_""I don't even want to talk to you right now." She cut me off with a growl."I needed to get answers." I sighed. "You could have died there. And I wouldn't have had any idea where to even recover your body from." She ma

Nina "Get in there and get rid of them." I heard someone snarl. "But the boss wanted the girl alive." Another voice argued. "Change of plans." The first person replied. "The bitch now knows too much. She's become a problem. Kill her, kill 'em both." My stomach dropped, and a faint ringing began in my ear. I crawled over to where Paul lay unmoving. Relief spread through me when I saw that his chest was rising and falling. There were specks of blood on his face and a dark red circle spreading over the shoulder of his white dress shirt. "Paul." I shook his shoulder, but the only response I got was a deep grunt. In the distance I could hear the sounds of guns cocking and boots crunching on the gravel as the killers inched toward the camper van. I was injured, had no weapons, an unconscious partner and we were surrounded. No one was coming. Not the neighbors. Not the cops.As Paul had said, this was the place people went to disappear. No cop in their right senses would come all the

Nina "Are you sure about this?" Paul asked as we crawled underneath the wire fence surrounding the sprawl. "No. But it's a little too late to back out now." I told him just as the hem of my dress caught on something sharp. The ripping sound was too loud in the silence that surrounded us. I cursed under my breath as I accepted the fact that this dress wouldn't be anything more than rags by the end of the night. We waded forward anyway. The Sprawl wasn't what i had been expecting. When Paul had described the place, I had envisioned some run down buildings, a sad looking street and camper Vans. But the reality was far worse. It had the same feel as an isolated radioactive town in a horror movie, with a crooked warning sign dangling from the wire fence. A big part of me was reconsidering my decision to come here at night, but I pushed the terror away. D7 was probably dead, and if that was true, then whatever he’d uncovered had been worth killing for. I needed to find out what that

Nina "Get the hell off her." Paul snarled, marching forward and reaching for Santiago. Santiago moved before Paul even reached him. One smooth turn, a calculated grip, and suddenly Paul’s arm was locked tight against his own throat—controlled, effortless, humiliating."What are you doing? Let him go!" I snapped. The taller man didn't spare me a glance. Instead, he bent his head to Paul's ear and whispered something that made the other man's eyes go saucer wide. A cruel smirk curled Santiago's mouth and then he tossed Paul away. "You crazy son of a bitch!" He roared. "How dare you attack an agent? Do you know how much shit you're in right now?" "Paul, calm down. Let's just leave." I said. "You're the one who's at my party without an invitation." Santiago shrugged. "Not to mention that you tried to put your hands on me. I only defended myself." "I'm here as Nina's date. So nice try, asshole." One dark brow lifted in curious amusement. "Oh? Her date? Is that so?" "Jealous?" "Pa
