Amber’s pov

It was already evening before I could discuss with Vee the reason why Adrian’s grandmother came to see me and she wasn’t having it.

“What do you mean she wants you to marry her grandson to change him? Does that even make sense?” She said irritated.

“I don’t know what to do Vee, I’m confused.”

“You don’t have to be confused, this is ridiculous. Since when did marriage become the cure for his arrogant and derogatory attitude?”

I could feel it, she was reaching her limit. It’s been a while I saw her this irritated and it was called for anyways. But why did it feel like the right thing to do? Why couldn’t I refuse her the moment she said it.

“Amber, don’t tell me you are agreeing to it.”

I sighed

“What’s the worst that can happen Vee, I already live with him as it is so it’s nothing new. I just have to sign the contract. That's all plus don’t forget there’s a monetary benefit. We need all the money we can get Vee, I can finally own my dream restaurant.”

Sighing in defeat.

“ I don’t know why I don’t feel comfortable about this but whatever you say, I will support you.”

“It’s fine, what could go wrong ? And lest I forget, he asked for a meeting and I need you to go with me tomorrow Vee.”

“You don’t even have to ask, I will go with you.”

The office building felt colder than usual when I arrived or maybe it was just me.

Vee eventually came with me which I appreciated more than i could admit. She walked slightly ahead, scanning the space like she was ready to fight someone if needed.

“You don’t have to do this if it feels wrong,” Vee muttered under her breath.

I gave a small, tight smile. “I already signed the intent letter. Backing out now would be messy.”

“Messy is better than emotional damage.”

I didn’t respond, I just chuckled and kept moving, not daring to keep bantering words with the queen.

He was already in the conference room when we arrived. Sitting at the head of the table looking as arrogant and bossy as usual. Crisp suit, calm

expression and somehow he looked appealing.

“Ms. Amber,” he said formally like he didn’t just dig into my lips days ago.

“Sir,” I replied just as formally.

Vee’s eyes darted between us immediately like she was trying to make out something.

The contract signing started. Pages, clauses and Legal terms. Vee made sure to scrutinize every tiny detail, I allowed her so that way she would be less worried.

I barely read anything past the first few lines. My mind kept catching on confidential agreement and the fine that came with it if I exposed it to any other party other than the people here.

“You understand the terms?” he asked, sensing my confusion.

“Yes,” I said quickly.

I could feel his eyes stay on my face a second too long.

“Good.”

When it was done, Vee leaned in immediately.

“I don’t like this,” she whispered. “At all.”

I sighed. “It’s just a job arrangement, nothing serious.”

Vee raised an eyebrow. “People don’t look at ‘just job arrangements’ like that.”

I didn’t ask what she meant because I already knew where she was driving to.

The contract signing was done and effective immediately, Vee parted ways with me much to her dismay.

The ride home was quiet, so quiet I could literally hear the sound of my heart beating. As if the driver knew my thoughts, he drove as swiftly as he could and I was happy to eventually go to my room to rest when he suddenly spoke.

“It starts today.”

“Of course it does.” I answered sharply.

“You know you have to stay away from Richard and anyone that would compromise the marriage and the reason for it. I don’t want another scandal with another man, it will affect my company.

“I know sir” I answered making sure to drag the sir.

“You didn’t have to accept,” he said.

That made me look at him properly for the first time since the office.

“You already know why I did,” I replied.

“So you are saying you are doing this for the money?” He asked.

I glanced at him and could see disbelief written on his face, which was understandable. I couldn’t tell him that his grandmother begged that I help restore his humanity even though she didn’t give me a back story. She also made me promise not to say a word to him about her plea.

“Yes, why else would I pause my life and enter into this hectic world of yours as your wife ?”

“Mmm, I see.” He said.

With that, he walked out and I was sure that changed the perception he had of me not like it was a new thing.

Adrian’s pov

I watched her walk into the conference room with her shoulders raised high as usual. It’s been two days since the kiss and I hadn’t seen her until today. I don’t know how much I yearned for her presence, till I saw her today. She was dressed in a simple corporate gown but her body hung onto it perfectly.

She came with someone I presumed to be her friend and they both read the contract together before she signed and she didn’t even hesitate.

No questions, no arguments, she just signed.

I signed after her, sliding the document aside.

I saw her converse with her friend who occasionally gave me a warning that looked like she was daring me to hurt her before they said farewell.

The drive home was quiet and awkward and I wondered why she was yet to ask me why I kissed her or was she playing the ignorant side ? We finally got home and I could see her make a way for her room which meant I wouldn’t have a proper conversation and know why she agreed to the contract.

“It starts today,” I said.

“Of course it does.”

“You know you have to stay away from Richard and anyone that would compromise the marriage and the reason for it. I don’t want another scandal with another man, it will affect my company.”

I mentioned Richard because I wanted to see how she would react to it but she didn’t show any reaction. Either that or she was masking it very well.

I studied her for a moment.

“You didn’t have to accept,”

That made her look at me properly for the first time since the office.

“You already know why I did,” I replied.

“So you are saying you are doing this for the money?” I asked in disbelief. I didn’t want to believe she was like every other girl out there.

“Yes, why else would I pause my life and enter into this hectic world of yours as your wife ?”

“Mmm, I see.”

I guess I was delusional to think she was different.

With that, I walked out, hoping to send a signal across

Richard’s POV

I stared at the screen, my grip tightening around the glass in my hand.

“Adrian Volkov Announces Sudden Marriage”

I let out a dry laugh. Of course, as usual.

He always had a way of doing this, Taking things, people, opportunities even without trying.

The grip on my phone became tighter and within a split second, I flung it towards my study table and I’m very sure it shattered.

Amber.

I replayed her image in my mind, the way she looked that night, the way she smiled at me. She didn’t belong to him and I wouldn’t iust let her go like that.

A slow smile formed on my lips.

“If he thinks this is over…” I murmured.

He’s mistaken, very mistaken.

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 18:”Calm before the storm”

Adrian’s pov Standing outside her room, I kept pacing back and forth not knowing whether to knock or just walk past. Since the last incident, she’s been avoiding me and it’s worse since we didn’t go to work anymore.I could hear the rustling pages of a book, I guess she’s reading a book. I really don’t even know how to go over and invite her for the banquet we would be going for. She made it clear to me that she hated my guts and didn’t want to have anything to do with me but this banquet is a huge deal for me as I get to meet investors too. I knocked on her door twice but got no response and just as I was about to leave, I heard the door creak open. It looked like she had been away for months while she was just here but staying away from me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to give you this.” I said stretching out my hand to give her a box. It contained a gown and jewellery for the banquet tonight. She looked at the box and back at me before muttering some words. “What’s

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 17: “Bait”

Adrian’s POVI watched the footage again and it was clearly Amber’s room. The camera angle was precise and it looked like it was planted more like a device. It didn’t look like it was taken by chance or from outside, it looked like an inside job. Who would come to my house to plant a device or did my workers betray me?My jaw tightened.“Run it back,” I said. The screen flickered as the video replayed. The angle didn’t move, it was a fixed position and it was hidden well. This wasn’t Aaron. This was way too professional and well thought out to be Aaron. Aaron was clumsy, he didn’t even have the resources to be able to get this close to my house. This wasn’t some desperate ex trying to make money, this was calculated. My phone buzzed.“Sir, we’ve got movement again.”“Location?”“It’s inconsistent. He’s switching fast. Burner devices.”I exhaled slowly, forcing my thoughts into order. Burner devices? Now it’s clear, I have ruled out Aaron certainly. He’s not capable enough to use bu

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 16: “He’s watching”

Adrian’s POVI didn’t sleep a wink last night, not because of her this time but because of that message.“You really think you’ve won? Let’s see how long she stays yours.”I stood in my study, staring at the screen again like I could figure out who the coward was or the words would somehow change. Whoever this was, they weren’t just bluffing. And that meant one thing, this wasn’t random.I dialed a number immediately, and he picked up the second ring.“Sir.”“I want everything pulled up again,” I said, my voice sharp. “Calls, messages, digital footprints. I don’t care how clean they think they are, find them.”“Yes, sir.”“And increase security.”“For her?”“For the house, for the office and everywhere she goes.”“Yes, sir.”I ended the call, my grip tightening around the phone. Whoever this was, they knew exactly what they were doing. I thought about this long and hard but I couldn’t figure anything out and it was driving me crazy. I stepped out of the study just as I saw her walki

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 15: “Certainty”

Amber’s POVI stayed awake all night staring at the ceiling in my room. Sleep wasn’t forthcoming as I relayed the day’s events over and over again.I couldn’t help but think about him and the way he said those words “You’re mine.” Something about it sent a tingling sensation down my spine. The words kept replaying in my head like a song I didn’t want to remember but couldn’t forget either. I turned on the bed, pulling the duvet tighter around me.This was getting out of hand, It was just a contract.A one-year agreement and nothing more so why did it feel like something was shifting?I exhaled and sat up. Maybe I needed water or something to distract me from the excessive thinking. The house was quiet as I stepped out, what did I expect? He’s probably asleep, it’s so late on the night. But just as I got to the kitchen, I saw him. He was leaning against the counter, sleeves rolled up and a glass of water in his hand. He looked like he had been there for a while and his ruffled ha

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 14: “Our Problem”

Adrian’s POV I couldn’t sleep. Not because I wasn’t tired but because I kept thinking about her. The way she looked when I walked into that room. She looked lost and shaken, she was trying so hard to hold herself together. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like that some pathetic excuse of a man had that much effect on her. And I definitely didn’t like the fact that she didn’t tell me. That didn’t sit right with me. I stood by the window, phone in hand, replaying everything Vee had said. Aaron. The name alone irritated me. Her ex-boyfriend, Pathetic and desperate. He was stupid enough to think he could get away with threatening my wife. A slow smile formed on my lips, he picked the wrong woman. I dialed a number. “Find him.” “I want everything. Where he lives, who he talks to, what he does. Everything.” “Yes, sir.” I ended the call. This wasn’t going to take long, I trusted my sources. I stepped out, expecting to see her, but the hallway was empty. She was probably still asleep

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 13: “Not Again”

Amber’s POV“Amber, it’s time to go.”His voice came through the door again, not the usual arrogant tone but firm enough to pull me out of my spiraling thoughts.I stared at my phone, my hands still shaking. A million dollars by tomorrow, where do I get the money from ? My chest tightened just by thinking about it. “Amber?”“I will meet you downstairs. ”I managed to say, my voice barely steady.I quickly got out of bed, forcing myself to move like everything was normal. Like I wasn’t about to break down in tears. The drive to the office felt longer than usual.I sat beside Adrian, quiet, my mind replaying the video over and over again.I shut my eyes briefly, I couldn’t afford to break down now at least not in front of him. “Did you sleep at all?” he asked suddenly.I blinked, turning to him. “Why would you ask that?”“You look like you didn’t.”“I’m fine,” I replied quickly. He stared at me for a second longer than necessary before he looked away.“I didn’t ask if you were fine.”

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 3: “Nothing Changes”

Amber’s POV I knew the moment I stepped into that office that today was going to ruin me. Not because of the interview nor because of the building. Because of him. He was sitting behind the desk like he belonged there, like the entire world bent itself around his existence yet somehow, I wasn’t

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 6:”Back to square one, again”

Amber’s POVHearing him address me like that did something to me and I wasn’t sure why especially when he put his arms over my shoulders. He never behaved that friendly with me since I have known him so why now. Even after I explained how I knew him, it still felt like he wasn’t satisfied, more li

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 5: “A New Life”

Amber’s POV The first day at work felt heavier than I expected. My outfit, the only decent clothes that seemed harmless at least to me, didn't sit well with some people. Not that I cared, I just wanted to make a good impression with the people I would be working with but the whispers started the m

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 4: “No Turning Back”

Amber’s POV By the time I got home, my head was a mess. Everything felt unreal. Last night, the interview. Him. Adrian Volkov, my boss. I pushed the door open and barely stepped inside when Vee appeared in front of me. “Amber!” she grabbed my arms. “Where have you been? Do you know how worried
