MAY

"You shouldn't leave like this!" Abby chased after me. I only smiled and ran faster. Abby caught up to me when I got to the garage. I was panting which was unusual. I used to be so athletic. Was it the pregnancy?

"We have to go somewhere," I announced.

"Where? I will bring Ken!" Abby informed me.

"No, you can drive instead," I replied. "Ken can stay behind. I am not going into a warzone. I am only going to the hospital for the sake of my unborn child. I need to be examined, you know."

"Well... My instincts tell me..." Abby had begun to say.

Fuck your instincts, I wanted to shout. However, I smiled pleasantly. I had to win Abby over so there would be smooth sailing. However, Abby was a hard kind. She could literally see through me. I had to learn how to fool ber properly.

"What hospital are you going to?" Abby asked.

"Where else?" I acted as if it didn't matter. "I am going to Greenfield hospital. Get in the car and drive. We need to be there in thirty minutes."

"That explains it!" Abby exclaimed. "You have another reason for going to the hospital. It is certainly not about a checkup."

I could never fool Abby. However, I decided to play dumb regardless. I helped myself into the back seat of the car and reluctantly, Abby entered the driver's seat, got the car running, and we drove off. Abby asked me no questions after. She respected my decisions, a trait I liked about her.

"Why aren't you asking me about my real intentions for going to Greenfield hospital?" I asked calmly.

"I don't want to be nosy," Abby replied.

"Oh, that's cool," I replied, mildly disappointed. I had begun to see Abby as someone I could trust but if she was never interested about what I wanted to do, there was no way it would work. A part of me wanted to tell her regardless but I beat that feeling. If she didn't want to know, I shouldn't be a chatterbox.

Susan was there to welcome me. Abby was there with me when Susan escorted me into her office. She complimented me several times, telling me how better I looked compared to last time.

"I'm sorry I didn't attend your wedding," Susan said sarcastically. "I wasn't exactly invited, you know."

It was her own way of scolding me for not inviting her to my wedding ceremony. Well, I had little control over that. Even Sherlyn and Emma got no invites. They didn't deserve it but as my family in name, Nicholas should have given them. Anyway, this was about Susan, my only doctor friend.

"I'm sorry about not inviting you. It was out of my control and everything was so rushed..." I apologized.

"It's fine," Susan replied. "If you are truly sorry, invite me home for dinner. I heard you had world-class chefs in your new home."

"Well, Nicholas is pretty particular about who prepares his meals. World-class chefs weren't an exaggeration," I replied. Susan was so excited that she kept asking when she would be invited over. I already made a mental note regarding that.

"I came here for an important reason..." I told Susan. I looked really serious here.

"For the checkup?" Susan asked. "I will call a friend from the gynecology department."

"No, that's not it," I replied. Susan looked alerted. I turned towards Abby who had been around ever since. Abby was standing by the window. Since we were on a top floor, she could see whatever happened below clearly.

"Then why?" Susan wanted to know.

"I came because of my father. I have to know how he is doing..." I held Susan's hands. "You work here. You can tell me all that has happened so far."

Susan took a deep breath and stared at Abby.

"It's fine," I reassured Susan. "You can talk. Abby is a trusted fellow."

Susan nodded, "I am not sure about the current situation of your father but it might be pretty bad. For weeks, Sherlyn has banned visitors. There are guards at the door everytime and only one person apart from Sherlyn has access to the room. I wonder how a single doctor can take care of him and if anything is being concealed. At least, there should be nurses who go in to check on him as well."

"Who is the doctor?" I asked carefully.

"His name is Dr. Charles. He is a genius, alright and I believe he was scouted by your father when he was healthy," Susan explained. "My gut feeling tells me he has joined Sherlyn."

"Of course," I shrugged. "That's the only reason he is the only doctor aware of my father's current condition."

"I think your father is being isolated..." Susan explained further. "Everyone knows at the hospital that he always has visitors. However, no one, not even his close doctor friends have been allowed to visit him. Something smells fishy."

"I have to see him!" I said firmly.

"They won't let you. There are guards at the door," Susan told me.

"How many?" Abby asked. This was her first time interrupting and all eyes fell on her.

"Three guards," Susan replied.

"I will take them," Abby told me confidently. "Susan can lead the way. You will see your father today, Miss."

"I am talking about three grown men!" Susan shouted at Abby. "Don't be reckless. Those men are well trained bodyguards. If something goes wrong..."

"I am well trained as well!" Abby said firmly.

"But... But you are a..." Susan paused.

"But I am a woman?" Abby laughed. “If that's what you think, you must be really naive indeed. How about you stop warning me and lead the way instead? Or wait, is it that you are afraid of losing your job?”

My eyes fell on Susan. She looked nervous.

“I will lead the way,” Susan muttered. She took a deep breath and did so. Abby followed closely behind while I took the rear position. We were at the VIP room's entrance in no time and Susan came towards me as Abby faced off the three guards.

“Leave here, bitch!” One of the guards pushed her.

Abby's eyes were fixed and her fists were clenched. I took a deep breath on her behalf. I must be the most nervous person here.

May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta

Susan's POV I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be sa

Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc

MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks

  • ACCIDENTAL SURROGATE FOR THE BILLIONAIRES   Chapter 26

MAY I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already? "Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath. "Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly. "Where are you going?" I asked him. "I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me. "I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed." Nicholas sighed. "Just go to b

NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
