EMMA

I was told Conan was sick and my mother saw it as the perfect opportunity to get closer to him. It made sense to me as well and I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. However, the issue was that I had never taken care of a sick person. In any case, I didn't get worried over this. Conan would probably have a nurse beside him so I wouldn't have to do much.

It was my first time at Conan's house. Even though he proposed to me during the engagement party meant for May, he still seemed distant from him. Like a snail, I was determined to creep into his heart slowly. A maid received me in the corridor and led me into Conan's room. He was well tucked in bed, sleeping.

I walked over and stood beside his bed.

“Hey, I'm here,” I tapped him carelessly. He woke up and I could tell from his eyes that he was really sick.

“Why did you do that?” The maid asked out of concern. “He just managed to sleep but you woke him from such a deep slumber.”

I turned towards her angrily. How dare she talk in that manner in my presence! I changed my mind last minute because of Conan. I didn't want to make a bad impression on him.

"I didn't know you would come..." Conan managed to say.

"Of course, I have to," I replied calmly. "I am sorry to see you in such a sad condition. How are you feeling?"

"Same," Conan replied. "I've taken medications so I will be fine. I was told to get some rest but since you are here, I don't think I can do that."

Conan laughed. I smiled as well and touched his shoulder carefully.

"Resting isn't that good! How about we go on a date?" I asked. "You don't look that good but I'm sure you can walk, can't you?"

"I can but..." Conan looked perplexed.

"Then that's it!" I exclaimed. "We shouldn't do something tiring because of your condition. How about we visit the cinema to see a movie? There is this new Hollywood movie that I've been dying to see. It's a romantic comedy. You will laugh and we will be happy and..."

"He is sick!" The maid shouted. "Who in the world goes on a date with a sick person? You should tell him to rest instead."

Now I can't take it anymore.

"And who the hell do you think you are, you lousy maid!" I shouted with care. "I am his fiancee! He is engaged to me. Get out of here. You are fired."

"She isn't a maid!" Conan shouted. I turned towards him and honestly, he looked disappointed. He offered no further explanation so I had to turn towards the maid. Oh, Conan just said she wasn't.

"I am his cousin," She revealed. "I flew in from Spain yesterday for a short vacation with Conan. He was sick so I was going to take care of him until you arrived. I never knew you would offer to drag his sick body out with you on a date instead."

"It's fine, Lovett. Don't make an issue out of this," Conan muttered. I knew I had fucked up. I should have known this would happen since I entered so tactlessly. But what could I do now? Damage control.

"Rest up, Conan. The doctor said you need lots of rest," His cousin, Lovett, told him. She sized me up dangerously and left the room to both of us. I was embarrassed as to the errors I had made.

"You should leave too. Let's have the date later," Conan told me. He laid properly on his bed and closed his eyes.

"Right," I replied. "Now is a bad time."

Conan didn't respond. I left the room quietly and the moment I was out, I almost hit my head on the wall to punish myself for my faults. I knew I would meet Lovett lurking around somewhere. It would be dangerous to make another mistake so I decided to call my mother and ask for advice immediately. I made the call in the lobby and explained things properly to her. She listened and cursed on the phone after.

"You can do nothing right! At this point, I can't be sure you are my child. You must have been switched at the hospital," Sherlyn said angrily. Those were the lines she always used.

"Just tell me what to do next. I put my pride down to ask you so I won't make any more mistakes," I replied over the phone.

Sherlyn calmed down and advised me to also stay calm and do nothing rash. I was to follow the lead of Lovett who was obviously better at caretaking than I was. Since I had ran my mouth dangerously, I should make up for it by talking less.

"He who talks too much is bound to say nonsense," Sherlyn told me. "Be careful. You are there to properly gain Conan's heart not lose it!"

She cut the call and I sighed. I turned back only to find Lovett right behind me with a smile on her face.

"Ahhh!" I screamed. I almost went nuts but my scream didn't shake her. She remained fixed in her position and she waited for me to come around.

"How long have you been there?" I asked her, dreading her answer.

"Long enough to know that you've been spying for your mother," Lovett replied. "Your family is a joke, you know that?"

"Please..." I pleaded. "Conan shouldn't know. If he knows, I will really be in trouble."

"Is that so?" Lovett asked. "Then that gives me more reason to let him know. I refuse to let him end up with someone like you."

I held her hand just as she wanted to turn back.

"I will do anything..." I told her desperately. "All I ask is that you keep this from Conan."

“Anything?” Lovett smiled. It was that dangerous smile of hers.

May's POV There was something about Susan that I couldn't figure out. She didn't give me those deep, playful expressions of hers and it bothered me. However, I concluded that meeting with my stepmother would have caused it. She must have been so nervous. Mama came into the room, wearing a smile as usual. "The meal is ready, Miss. Shall I escort you?" Mama offered. "Don't worry, Mama," I replied. "I will take my friend by myself. You should go and rest for now." Mama turned towards Susan,"You are the best friend of the lady of the mansion. Please make sure to feel at home and enjoy your stay here." "It will be a short one, ma'am," Susan replied. "I will leave after lunch." "Why?" I touched Susan's shoulder lightly. "If you are here, just stay with me till evening. I will get the driver to take you home." "I'm sorry," Susan managed to smile. "I have some papers I need to finish working on. They are research papers and they need to be submitted soon." I nodded in accepta

Susan's POV I stared at Sherlyn. She had a smile on her face and it felt as if I was giving her exactly what she wanted. I had to stop being uneasy. If I continued like this, it would be the same as giving her hints about what I really wanted. "May is a good friend..." I began to say. "She won't treat me as a slave of hers. In fact, she treats no one like they are slaves. You shouldn't use that line." "I know you have big dreams," Sherlyn told me calmly. "You studied medicine and surgery for many years in the university. You started at our hospital as a resident for four years and now, you are a fellow. Next year, you are supposed to clinch the professor's position and be an official staff member. Life would get really rosy when that happens." "What about that?" I asked feigning ignorance. "I am sure you won't give up your dreams just to become a doctor nobody knows at your friend's house," Sherlyn continued. "May is known for being Nicholas's wife but do you think she will be sa

Sherlyn The hospital's chief executive officer was right in front of me. His name was Roberts and he has been in the position since the time of my husband. I was seated while he stood. He was a tall man with a beastly aura. "I deserve an explanation for what happened yesterday, don't I?" I asked him calmly. "I am sorry, ma'am," He replied. "Stop it!" I shouted angrily. "I need an explanation rather than an insincere apology. How on earth could the VIP room be accessed forcefully. Is that the kind of system we are building? Where is the hospital's pride as the best hospital in the country?" He said nothing. He must have thought this was his best option. However, it made me angrier. "Do you know why I didn't fire you even though you were fiercely loyal to my husband?" I asked him carefully. "I'm not sure..." He muttered. "However, I think it might be because I am good at my job." "Exactly," I replied with a smirk on my face. "I fired almost every executive that was loyal to Marc

MAY What was that incident? Was it related to Nicholas's nightmare? I turned towards Mama, searching for answers. However, she looked away. I touched her shoulder lightly and looked into her eyes. "I need to know the problem if I am going to help Nicholas," I told her carefully. "He slept well last night in my arms. However, that would work only when I'm there. If you want him to sleep peacefully, tell me the reason. I will help him." "I have no doubt you can help him," Mama muttered. "It's an old matter and only a few people know it. It happened when he was ten years old and he has been traumatized by it since then. He had to see a psychiatrist for a while but he continued to have nightmares every night. I get worried about him every now and then due to that reason." "What happened?" I asked curiously. "It was an accident!" Mama replied. "He went driving with his parents and they got into an accident. Only Nicholas survived and he blames himself for what happened. He thinks

MAY I knew exactly when he entered the room. I could tell he was being delicate so he wouldn't rouse me so I simply played along. I acted as if I was asleep. He went to shower and after, he literally crawled into bed with me. When it seemed as if he was asleep, I turned to look at him. He was particularly handsome when he was asleep. I turned to sleep only to hear him jump out of bed in a few minutes. I turned out of concern and by the time I did, he was sitting at a corner in the bed. It had only been fifteen minutes when he slept off. How could nightmares come already? "Do you have nightmares every night?" I asked as I touched his shoulder. He turned back to look at me and took a deep breath. "Go to bed," He told me. He stood up and walked to the door. I sat up quickly. "Where are you going?" I asked him. "I want to grab a bottle of water. Go to bed, May," He told me. "I have water here," I pointed at the table. "Drink that and join me in bed." Nicholas sighed. "Just go to b

NICHOLAS It was eerie and that was the exact impression I wanted to leave in Charles's heart. I could see him shaking out of fear. He was right to do that. "Please don't kill me..." He muttered with his voice quivering. "I won't tell anyone about this. I won't report to the police that you kidnapped me. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to." "Is that so?" I laughed. "You have seen many movies, it seems. I haven't seen as many as you would have so I will ask you this. What happens to the victim when he sees his kidnapper's face?" "I promise I will tell nobody. Just spare my life!" He begged. I smiled and stood up from my chair. I walked behind him and slowly touched his shoulders. He was tied so he couldn't move but I could tell that he was out of breath. "I am not a kidnapper for ransom as you already know," I began. "You have the guts to whisper terrifying things into the ears of my wife and that's why you are here.""Te... Terrifying things?" He stammered. "You see, Ch
