EMILY'S POV

I laid flat on my back, staring at the ceiling and lost in thoughts. He had asked me to marry him. Threatened me, actually.

He offered to pay me off, as though money was everything. Yes, I wouldn't dare lie that the amount of money he was offering to pay, wasn't huge.

At least, I would be able to build my life from scratch after I divorced him, knowing that I want nothing more to do with my father and his family after this.

Maybe I could finally chase my actual dreams, unlike my father had wanted. To live for myself and make up for lost times with my uncle's family.

My mom?

I guess I was just going to keep her away from my life. She was the origin of my problems moreover. I was tired of putting her before myself and looking out for her, even when she didn't care how her actions affected my life.

Just then, a faint knock on my door pulled me out of my thoughts, and I released a low sigh.

Hopping down the bed, I made my way to the door, another knock

  • ACCIDENTAL SURROGATE FOR THE ENEMY DON   23

EMILY'S POV It was already too late to call uncle Matteo or Agatha, to know how my mother was faring, so I decided to wait until morning. I had woken up really late, because I wasn't able to get any sleep until midnight. I woke up by some minutes past 11am, but didn't even bother to have my bathe before putting a call across to Agatha. She had picked up, but was unstable. I couldn't properly make out her words because the background sounded rowdy. She ended the call, but not before saying she was going to call me back. It was over two hours now, and she was yet to call back. I had my bath and brushed my teeth already, but didn't really have the appetite to eat the meal that the villa's chef had brought in a few hours back. Looking at my phone screen for the hundredth time that day, tears stung my eyes. I knew I said I wasn't going to care about what went on with her anymore, but then.... I just couldn't help it. She was still my mother, junkie or not. More than anythi

  • ACCIDENTAL SURROGATE FOR THE ENEMY DON   22

EMILY'S POV Did Isabella just ask her such?! Clara looked at me, and I could see that she was uncomfortable. Great! I wasn't weird for feeling uncomfortable then!! Why were the other women laughing at Larissa's expense?! "Isabella..." Her name left my lips, before I could hold back. Tears stung my eyes, and I wasn't even the one being harassed. "Emilyyy..." She dragged my name, flashing me a sugary smile that could leave anyone diabetic. I took in a deep breath, trying to stay composed as I realized they were all looking at me now. Including Clara. "I find it particularly interesting, that you seem soooo...." I paused, trying to find the right words. "...So worked up over who Mr Matteo chooses to bring as his date." The silence in the air was piercing. It answered all the questions in my head. Isabella most certainly had a past with Matteo once upon a time. But wasn't she married now?! The women all looked at me like I had done what no other person would dare

  • ACCIDENTAL SURROGATE FOR THE ENEMY DON   21

EMILY’S POV It had been two days since the wedding. Dante had said he would be back the next day, but he didn’t come back. I stayed alone in the villa, doing little, saying little. Vito checked in sometimes, asking if I needed anything, but mostly, it was just silence. I sat by the window as the warm rays of the setting sun hit me, watching the waves roll lazily against the rocks below the villa. The air was warm, the kind that made you sleepy. Just as my eyes started to droop close, a memory flashed through my mind, and I flung them open. Why did he have to kiss me like that?! I hated that I could still smell his rich Cologne in the air around me. I was lost in thought when I heard a knock on the door. “Come in.” I said, turning my head to the door. Vito walked in, holding a large white box in his hands. “What’s that?” I asked, sitting up. He placed it on the bed and gave a small nod. “A delivery for you, Signora. From the Don.” “From Dante?” A small frown appea

EMILY'S POV The organ began a soft hymn, as I walked into the chapel. I released a tiny nerve wracking sigh, not surprised to see just a few people quietly sitting in the pews. I didn't even expect anyone would come, seeing as we were hurriedly getting wedded outside of Italy. Dante stood near the altar, beside the priest, his hand clasped behind in a composed stance. As I walked further down the aisle, our eyes locked and I quickly looked away, gripping my bouquet much firmly. Just when I thought I’d made peace with my fate, disbelief hit me all over again. I was marrying Dante. Within seconds, I got to the altar and the priest smiled warmly at me. "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." He began. "Amen." The few people in the congregation replied. "Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we have come together in the house of God, to witness the joining of Dante and Emily in the holy sacrament of matrimony." "Marriage is a sacred coven

  • ACCIDENTAL SURROGATE FOR THE ENEMY DON   18

DANTE'S POV When she asked me what the catch was, to gain her freedom, I smiled internally. We were finally getting somewhere with her. Atleast, she had made peace with the fact that she had to give something, to gain another thing. So, I laid out my cards. She had to marry me. Over my dead body, will I watch Marco be legally recognized as my child's father. She looked at me as though I had gone mad, making me release a mockful scoff. "You're joking, right?" She asked. "Do I sound like I am?" "No, but it has to be a joke. I cannot marry you, Dante! I will not." "Ahhh.... Collombo." I chuckled distastefully. "I definitely do not wish to marry you, but my child comes first." I watched as her eyes grew dim for a brief moment, before she quickly blinked away the emotion I had seen in them. "First of all, do not call me that. My name is Emily. And of course, I never thought you'd be insane enough to wish to marry me." "So what should I call you, huh?" I took a s
