Imani locked her eyes into her laptop, trying to reply to all her mails, her eyes ran to her phone and she checked the time, it was few minutes to 10 o’clock. She shut her eyes, then opened ot briefly and looked at where Emily sat, she’s turned off her lights and went home. “Argh, I told her to go home… Damn! Jaden will be waiting for me at home,” Imani mumbled to herself, packed her things and headed to the company’s garage, where her car is. Today was really a long day for her, if she hasn’t been prepared for situations like this, it would have been hectic than this. After the stress she went through at the police custody, she barely ate and her body was only running on the coffee she drank in the morning. As she dragged her feet on the floor out of the elevator, her heels echoed sharply against the concrete floor of the private underground garage. She just wanted to go home. To her bed, to her little bundle of joy. Jaden. Then she lifted her head and she saw him. Leaning against her matte black Bugatti Chiron, arms crossed, suit jacket off, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Killian Morgan He wasn't looking at his phone, his eyes were on the elevator doors, waiting for her. Even when she came out, he was still staring…at her. was looking right at the elevator doors. Waiting. For her. Imani stopped dead. Her brows knitted, “What are you doing here?" Her voice was tired, but sharp. "This is a private garage, Killian. You can't just —" “Let’s get something to eat,” Killan said sticking out his hands “Your keys?” He asked but Imani scoffed and crossed her arms. “Who are you to tell me that, Killan?” Imani argued. Killan knew there’s no way he’d get Imani to come with him, he rubbed the back of his hair, "I heard what happened,” he said, his deep voice cutting through the cold garage air. He pushed off the car and walked towards her. Slowly. “I came because of that,” He ended. But that only rub salt on Imani’s injury. "Let me guess. You came to see if the rumors are true? If Shawn Tech is finally falling?" she spat, clutching her bag tighter. She’s been holding it in all day, her heart is about to explode from what she’s been through today…and what Killan said only let her emotions out. She bit her lower lips, “..or should I say, you came to confirm if I’m about to steal away your amazing ideas? Since that’s what the news said??” Killan shut his eyes, massaged his forehead then took a step closer, close enough she could smell his cologne — dark, clean, expensive. "No," he said quietly. "I came to see if you were fine.” That made her pause. Killian's eyes — that impossible grey — scanned her face. The faint dark circles under her eyes, the tight line of her lips that she only got when she was holding everything in. "You look exhausted, did you get to eat at all? I-” he murmured, trying to touch Imani. Imani hid way her hands and swallowed hard before saying, "I'm fine," she lied instantly, looking away quickly before she get caught. Killan leans in, his face right in front of Imani’s face. "Liar. You shook your head ‘no’ while you said you are fine. That’s a lie defect,” he pointed out almost immediately. Before she could react, he reached out. His fingers barely brushed her cheek, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His touch was warm against her cold skin. Imani almost lost herself in his gentle touch, then she flinched. She slapped away his hands "You have no right to touch me. Don’t cross the line, Killan” she warned and was heading to the car. whispered. "Why not?" Killan suddenly asked. “Why can’t I cross a line?” "Because I don't need anyone's pity. Especially yours." Imani replied almost immediately. He let out a low, humorless chuckle. "Pity? Do you really think I pity you?" He stepped closer, caging her against the concrete pillar without even touching her. "I was worried sick, Imani,” he admitted, his voice dropping. "When I saw them put you in that police car on the news..." "So you came to rescue me?" She raised a challenging eyebrow, trying to regain control. "I handled it, Mr. Morgan. I don't need saving." "I know, Imani Shawn can handle anything and needs no one’s help. " he said, his eyes locked on hers. "That's why I’m here. At least, to get you to eat. Emily told me you didn’t eat since the news broke.” Silence stretched between them, thick and electric. Imani was dumbfounded for a while, she only stared into his neat handsome face. That distraction made Killan seize the chance to snatch her car keys from her bag and roll it between his fingers in the air. Imani got a snap of herself, “What are you doing?! Give me my keys!” Imani snapped but Killan shrugs his shoulders. He left her side and opening the passenger seat for her, "Get in. I'm taking you home." Imani stared at the open door, then at him. She can’t believe her ears, “This is my Car. I can take myself home.” She refused. "Imani." He said her name like a warning and a plea at once. "For once, stop trying to be invincible. Just let me drive you home." Killan persuaded. Imani Jaw tightened, “Get ready to defend your ideas once again, huh? I won’t let this slide..” Imani grumbled, looking at the car, his outstretched hand. She grumbled and slid into the passenger seat reluctantly. Killan smile came on in a slow, victorious smirk. “About my ideas, I’m more than ready to defend it over and over again. That’s what I live for,” He whispered to Imani, smirked. Imani rolled her eyes. A smile broke across Killan face, he gently closed the door for her. Imani looked out through the window. After going through such a rough day, her shoulders felt empty unlike in the morning. Her eyes ran to the rearview, Killan started the car and drove out of the private parking garage. Imani lost herself again, staring at him from the rearview mirror. ‘He came for her’ those words lingered around.CHAPTER 34Killian drove them back home, the reporters were gone and no one was stalling in front of her house anymore. Jaden was half-asleep on her shoulder, she pat his hair. “Thank you,” Imani said to Killian in the car, her voice quiet. “For today. For Jaden. For — for everything.”Killian looked at her, his hands still on the wheel. “You don‘t have to thank me.”“I do,” she said. “For a while, I forgot my worries and it was possible because you were there,” Imani muttered.“…I don‘t know who saved my company, but I know it wasn‘t luck.” She mumbled getting off the car. Killan came out of the driver seat, “Tomorrow is going to be a great one. Have a goodnight rest,” He waved and Jaden lifted his head on Imani shoulder. Jaden woke up just enough to wave, he got down from Imani’s arms, “Bye, Daddy!” He giggled and ran inside the house Imani froze, her face burned. “I‘m sorry, he — he keeps saying —”“It‘s okay,” Killian said softly. “Goodnight, Imani.”She watch him get back i
CHAPTER 33 - A Soft and warm sun shine through Killan loft windows, Imani blinked, her eyes opening up. Her eyes were swollen, Her throat was dry. She remembered how much she has cried last night, she must have cried her sleep to bed — her cheeks still had dried tears, her eyelashes stuck together. Her hands ran over her mouth, She didn‘t know when she slept there. In Killan’s room? Last thing she remembered was crying in front of Killian, After that — nothing. She must have passed out from exhaustion. She sat up fast, looking around. Facepalming herself in embarrassment, she looked at his mother‘s frame on the nightstand thenlooked over the couch, Her red blazer folded neatly on the chair. But Killian wasn‘t in bed. “Killian?” she called. “Killian?” No one responded. Which got her worried. She swung her legs off the bed — she was still in yesterday‘s inner clothes — and walked barefoot toward the stairs. Until she walked down the stairs and her nostril hit with a delic
CHAPTER 32 - BREATHEImani got into Killian's car, she slid in and went quiet. She saw Emily diverting the reporter away from Killan’s car. Killian got in the driver's seat, locked the doors, and pulled out of Imani tech garage, past the cameras, past the whole chaos. The whole street of New York as loud but suprisingly, inside the car it was silent.Imani rested her head against the window, series of questions ran through her mind, loud and messy.“Did I know? Did I ignore the signs about Luke?” “How long has be been a threat?” “Did I ruin everything by setting that trap?”She stared out the window, hands clenched in her lap, breathing shallow.Killian didn't ask her to talk. He just reached over and pressed a button on the console. He helped her open the car roof — the panoramic sunroof sliding back, allowing her to receive fresh air.Cold breeze touched Imani face distracting her from all what she has been thinking, she looked at Killian who only focused on driving. "Breathe,"
CHAPTER 31 The room froze after hearing what Sarah had just uttered, Imani frowned. “What? What the hell are you talking about?”Sarah laughed, even as the guards pulled her. “You trapped me with a fake file? Cute. But your precious Luke tortured a few of the shareholders! He almost killed them! Just so he could become partners with you! He wanted your company, not you!” Luke stood up so fast that his chair fell. “She’s lying! She’s insane! Don’t listen to her, Imani—” he defended and looked over at the guards. “Guards! Take her out,” Luke yelled and they kept pulling Sarah out but she only laughed like a maniac. Then just as she was being dragged away, messages, videos, news flew through everyone’s phone, gasped followed. Emily who has received a message as well, ran towards Imani with a dark and pale face, holding an iPad with trembling hands, “Ms Shawn... you need to see this.”On the screen — a video. Shaky, taken in a dark steakhouse. Luke Anderson sitting with two of Imani
30Morning came faster than anything else, the office homepage on social media filled with claims of theft. Suprisingly someone has leaked the project from Imani’s office. Not in the news but on the company’s page where everyone had access to. At 9:03 AM, an anonymous email was forwarded to the entire Imani Tech board, to all department heads, to Legal, to PR. The subject line:RE: PROJECT ECHO - STOLEN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?Inside was Sarah Velt’s photo of the credentials file. And a note:> “As a concerned employee and eye witness, I have reason to believe that PROJECT ECHO is not an original project. This is a stolen project from another tech company. Credentials show it was copied from a popular Tech’s internal archive. Imani Shawn is putting Imani Tech at risk of a massive lawsuit and theft! - A Loyal Employee”Sarah sent it from a burner email, but she stood by the coffee machine like an eyewitness, like a hero.“It’s true!” she told anyone who would listen, her voice shaki
29Roi was now in Imani’s office, his suit jacket had been taken away to clean it properly. He was in his white shirt, sleeves rolled up, tie loosened, sitting like he owned her office. His badge — IMANI TECH - HEAD OF RESEARCH - ROI MORGAN — sat on her desk.Imani stood by the window, arms crossed, looking at him.Now she understood why the new Head Researcher’s name sounds so familiar.“Are you Killian’s brother?” Imani asked directly. No hello, no welcome.Roi smiled. That same Morgan smile, but colder than Killian’s. “Took you long enough. I was wondering when you’d notice. We are alike, aren’t we?”“We are not—” Imani stopped herself. They were. Same jawline. Same height. Same dark hair. But Killian’s eyes were always tired, always carrying something. Roi’s eyes were empty and amused.“What brings you to my company? I checked your résumé and I saw your great works which made me wonder why you left them and came here?,” Imani said quietly Roi touched the back of his head unconsc
