CHAPTER 34

Killian drove them back home, the reporters were gone and no one was stalling in front of her house anymore.

Jaden was half-asleep on her shoulder, she pat his hair.

“Thank you,” Imani said to Killian in the car, her voice quiet. “For today. For Jaden. For — for everything.”

Killian looked at her, his hands still on the wheel. “You don‘t have to thank me.”

“I do,” she said. “For a while, I forgot my worries and it was possible because you were there,” Imani muttered.

“…I don‘t know who saved my company, but I know it wasn‘t luck.” She mumbled getting off the car.

Killan came out of the driver seat, “Tomorrow is going to be a great one. Have a goodnight rest,” He waved and Jaden lifted his head on Imani shoulder.

Jaden woke up just enough to wave, he got down from Imani’s arms, “Bye, Daddy!” He giggled and ran inside the house

Imani froze, her face burned. “I‘m sorry, he — he keeps saying —”

“It‘s okay,” Killian said softly. “Goodnight, Imani.”

She watch him get back into his car and pull away, her heart still rejoicing over her company getting back on its feet.

“Who could be K.M? Who forced the truth out of Luke?” These questions battled in her head and she shrugs her shoulders and walked into the house.

On getting into the house, she met her father, Mr. Shawn —a retired CEO, putting on a leather jacket—seated on one of her couch.

“Dad?” Imani said, startled, Jaden already cuddled to his feet, “What are you doing here?”

He stood up, his eyes on Imani’s first. He went closer and pull her into a warm hug. Few seconds later, he pulled away.

“I saw the news,” he said, his voice low, tired. “Your ex-husband face is all over the news intimidating shareholders…Your stock dropping? Imani, I‘m your father. You think I wouldn‘t come?”

“Grandpa! I went to a fancy place! Daddy took us!” Jaden chipped in.

Mr. Shawn‘s eyebrow went up. He looked at Imani. “Daddy?”

Imani swallowed. “Dad, it‘s — Killian Morgan gave Jaden a ride to the and —”

Her father didn‘t shout, “I’m glad someone was there to make you feel better.” He said taking his seat.

Then Mr Shawn cleared his throat, “I know Jaden wouldn’t just call anyone his Daddy. So, tell me who‘s been acting as Jaden’s daddy?”

—

While Killan drove back home, he couldn’t stop reminiscing over what happened today. For the first time in years, he felt light. He had seen Imani laugh, he had seen Imani open up to him.

Just for a moment, his hope went high. He’s made someone smile for the longest time. He had done something right for once.

He got into his garage and parked, “She’s cute…too cute,” His head replayed how Imani had splashed the water on him. If anyone saw him right now, they’d thought he’s going crazy because he kept smiling to himself.

He took an elevator into the house, his lips danced in joy as the door opened.

But all of that washed away when he saw his father and Roi was already waiting.

His father, was sitting in Killian‘s chair like he owned the place. Roi was standing by the window, arms crossed, looking down, not looking at Killian.

The atmosphere was odd, Killan knew what’s coming next. “Dad?” Killian said, closing the door. “What are you doing here? I was just about to give you a call.

Finally, his father looked at him.. “I heard from Roi. You decided to buy 13% of Imani Tech shares. That wasn’t what’s in the plan? Why are you taking another route?”

Killan swallowed the lump in his throat, “That’s the fastest way to earn her trust, father,” He answered, Roi scoffed from where he stood.

Mr Morgan nodded, he lean forward and Roi poured him a drink, “I guess, you’re moving faster than I thought,” He gulp down the drink.

“That’s why I told you I will take care of it. You shouldn’t have sent Roi over..” Killan mentioned.

“I sent Roi over so he can keep you in check. I was afraid you had started to move astray,” His father answered then he sprang up on his feet.

His eyes ran to the coffee table, His mother’s frame was still on the table…a smirk escaped his lips. Mr Morgan took in a deep breathe and turn to Killan, “You have debts to pay remember? You should always remember and live in that guilt and carry out this plan successfully, all right?”

Killan folded his fist, his heart tightened from guilt. His father walked away and left his house.

Killan headed to his room, Roi trailed behind, his hands crossed. “Are you going to let Dad push you around?” He asked but Killan didn’t respond.

“Does Imani even know you have this evil side of you?” Roi mentioned but Killan didn’t utter a word.

Roi rolled his eyes and ran in front of Killan, “It’s this same attitude! It’s what made Mom died..tsk, are you about to murder Imani too—”

Roi hasn‘t talked before Killan gave him the reaction he was expecting, his folded ball acted before his brains.

Killan fist turned into a tightened ball and it came running down to Roi lips.

It was fast. What seems like an easy punch, but enough to split Roi lower lip.

Roi stumbled back, his hand on his mouth. He touched the blood on his lips, his eyes widened.

“Next time you utter such nonsense…it won’t be only punch, I’d be strangling you.”

Roi laughed, wiping blood off his mouth,“What? Tsk, Now you’re feeling bad for Imani?”

“Shut up Roi! Don’t let me—”

“Why? You’re going to kill me just like you killed Mom?”

What the hell are you talking about?”Sarah laughed, even as the guards pulled her. “You trapped me with a fake file? Cute. But your precious Luke tortured a few of the shareholders! He almost killed them! Just so he could become partners with you! He wanted your company, not you!” Luke stood up so fast that his chair fell. “She’s lying! She’s insane! Don’t listen to her, Imani—” he defended and looked over at the guards. “Guards! Take her out,” Luke yelled and they kept pulling Sarah out but she only laughed like a maniac. Then just as she was being dragged away, messages, videos, news flew through everyone’s phone, gasped followed. 30Morning came faster than anything else, the office homepage on social media filled with claims of theft. Suprisingly someone has leaked the project from Imani’s office. Not in the news but on the company’s page where everyone had access to. At 9:03 AM, an anonymous email was forwarded to the entire Imani Tech board, to all department heads, to Legal, to PR. The subject line:RE: PROJECT ECHO - STOLEN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?Inside was Sarah Velt’s photo of the credentials file. And a note:> “As a concerned employee and eye witness, I have reason to believe that PROJECT ECHO is not an original project. This is a stolen project from another tech company. Credentials show it was copied from a popular Tech’s internal archive. Imani Shawn is putting Imani Tech at risk of a massive lawsuit and theft! - A Loyal Employee”Sarah sent it from a burner email, but she stood by the coffee machine like an eyewitness, like a hero.“It’s true!” she told anyone who would listen, her voice shaki

29Roi was now in Imani’s office, his suit jacket had been taken away to clean it properly. He was in his white shirt, sleeves rolled up, tie loosened, sitting like he owned her office. His badge — IMANI TECH - HEAD OF RESEARCH - ROI MORGAN — sat on her desk.Imani stood by the window, arms crossed, looking at him.Now she understood why the new Head Researcher’s name sounds so familiar.“Are you Killian’s brother?” Imani asked directly. No hello, no welcome.Roi smiled. That same Morgan smile, but colder than Killian’s. “Took you long enough. I was wondering when you’d notice. We are alike, aren’t we?”“We are not—” Imani stopped herself. They were. Same jawline. Same height. Same dark hair. But Killian’s eyes were always tired, always carrying something. Roi’s eyes were empty and amused.“What brings you to my company? I checked your résumé and I saw your great works which made me wonder why you left them and came here?,” Imani said quietly Roi touched the back of his head unconsc
