CHAPTER 33 -

A Soft and warm sun shine through Killan loft windows, Imani blinked, her eyes opening up. Her eyes were swollen, Her throat was dry. She remembered how much she has cried last night, she must have cried her sleep to bed — her cheeks still had dried tears, her eyelashes stuck together.

Her hands ran over her mouth, She didn‘t know when she slept there. In Killan’s room?

Last thing she remembered was crying in front of Killian, After that — nothing. She must have passed out from exhaustion.

She sat up fast, looking around. Facepalming herself in embarrassment, she looked at his mother‘s frame on the nightstand thenlooked over the couch, Her red blazer folded neatly on the chair. But Killian wasn‘t in bed.

“Killian?” she called. “Killian?”

No one responded.

Which got her worried. She swung her legs off the bed — she was still in yesterday‘s inner clothes — and walked barefoot toward the stairs.

Until she walked down the stairs and her nostril hit with a delicious aroma of food.

Pancakes.

Killian was already cooking.

He was in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, hair still messy from sleep, in gray sweatpants and a black tee, flipping pancakes at the stove. Two plates already set on the dinning table.

He saw Imani coming down.

“Morning,” he said, soft, like he didn‘t want to scare her. “You slept. Finally.” His smile grew wider than anything else.

Imani touched the railing, embarrassed. “I — I didn‘t mean to sleep in your bed. I —”

“You needed it,” he said. “Come. Eat.”

They sat at the dinning, Pancakes with blueberries, scrambled eggs, orange juice. A simple breakfast.

Imani ate slowly. Killian watched her eat more than he ate. “Someone give me a hint, you know?” He suddenly said making Imani look up from where she sat.

“What hint?”

“The pancakes. They are your favorite aren’t they? Someone told me I’d win your heart if I make you those,” He answered and that was when Imani remembered how Jaden had told him that the last time he came.

Imani chuckled, “You remember that?” She said.

“Yes. I can’t forget any details regarding you,” Killan replied. Imani froze on her food and looked at him.

“You—”

“And yeah, I‘ve got something for you,” he said, pouring more juice. “And somewhere to visit later. If you‘re up for it.

“Is that a surprise?” she asked, voice still hoarse from crying.

“Finish your food first,” he smiled. “You‘ll see.”

Like Imani wished for the food to finish immediately, she was more than eager to see what Killan has in store for her, when they finished eating.

Killan took Imani by hand taking her to the main entrance, “And….”

She look at Killan, fidgeting with her hands. “Killian, you don‘t have to—”

“Open the doors,” Killan instructed and immediately, the entrance door clicked and it opened.

Killian looked at the door and smiled. “That‘s it.”

Imani froze.

“Jaden?!” She screams looking at her precious son in front of her.

Jaden jumped into her arms. “Mommy!” Imani dropped to her knees and caught him, holding him so tight she couldn‘t breathe

“My baby — my baby, how —”

His nanny, Mrs. Rome, came in as well, smiling. “Ms. Emily told me what happened, don’t worry Jaden did well last night.”

She said to Imani who was still hugging her child

“And when Mr. Morgan called me early morning, ma‘am, I knew how much you must have missed Jaden so he asked me to bring him over,” The nanny added.

Slowly, Imani pulled away from Jaden and her head lifted towards Killan. she reached over and hugged Killian — tight, hard, her face buried in his chest.

He was stunned and it made him stiffened for a second, surprised but then hugged her back.

“Thank you,” she whispered into his shirt. “Thank you, Killian. Thank you.”

It was over two minutes before Imani realizes what she’s doing, she cleared her throat and immediately pulled away from Killan, looking away making sure not to meet his gaze.

The whole room fell silent, no one was willingly to talk.

Jaden interupted, “Mommy! Daddy is taking us to the amusement park!” He shouted.

Imani‘s eyes widened. “Daddy?” She added an awkward laugh, “He’s not ‘Daddy’ he’s uncle Killan, huh!” She cautioned the little kid.

Jaden grumbled, “Okay mommy,” He went silent after.

Imani looked at Killan for an explanation, “Amusement park?”

He cleared his throat, looking anywhere but at Imani. “I told him we might go somewhere fun,”

“I mean, I already booked us a reservation at the amusement park. Just the three of us. Let’s go have fun, Imani,” Killan said, he looked at Jaden.

“Right?” He asked and the little boy nod frantically.

“Yayy!” Jaden exclaims. Killan grabbed his little wrist walking ahead while Imani shook her head with a little smile lingering around her lips.

---

They got to the amusement park and truly, it was just the three of them there. Imani shoot her eyebrow up, “Only us? Did you rent it out?”

Killan shrugs his shoulders pretending not to know what Imani is talking about, then he pointed changing the subject, “Look! Let’s take the rollercoaster!”

Imani widened her eyes, “That rollercoaster has a lot of height…aren’t you scared? I heard people cry after riding it,” Imani teased and Killan scoffed.

“Me? Cry? Why should I cry over a mere Rollercoaster?” He proudly said, leading the way.

Imani let out a laugh, “hmm, let’s see..”

Few minutes later, they all finished riding and guess who made the loudest scream and was wiping his tears?

“I thought you said you won’t cry huh? Look at you…crybaby…hehe,” Imani teased.

Killan tried to keep a strong face, “But I—”

He didn’t finish his words when Jaden splashed water on his face from his water gun, “That’s not nice, Jaden…” He said.

“Yes Jaden..that’s not nice, you can see Mr Killan is still sulking..” Imani teased.

Killan suddenly felt like his pride got hurt, he grabbed the water gun beside him too and splashed water on Imani jokingly — just a little squirt from Jaden‘s toy.

Before they knew it, they had started fighting with water splashing all around. Screaming, laughing, running around the stalls, Imani‘s hair wet, Killian‘s black tee soaked, Jaden in the middle shouting “Mommy wins! Yayy!”

“Gotcha!” Killan laughed from the bottom of his whole heart. It was rare laughter yet genuine.

Imani forgot her problem right at the moment, she was laughing so hard that her stomach began to hurt.

The water fight went on for about 45 minutes and spent extra hours at the amusement park until they realized it was getting dark and they sat by a bench, Jaden already sleeping on Killan’s lap.

Killan and Imani was eating cotton candy while they watch the lights in the amusement become so beautiful, Imani let out a breath.

She looked at the sky, her eyes getting thinner in excitement, “I had fun today..” she said and Killan looked at her.

“I’m glad you did,” He answered.

“You rented this place out because you thought I’d be uncomfortable right?” Imani suddenly asked.

“I—”

Imani phone buzzed, interrupting. it was a message from Emily. “Ma’am, the company stock skyrocketed. We received an anonymous support from a shareholder.”

“His name is KM. He bought a large amount of shares…we—we are back on our feets!” Another message.

Huh? Imani stared at the message. She didn’t know what to do.

Her company is out danger? “Who is KM?” She whispered.

He almost killed them! Just so he could become partners with you! He wanted your company, not you!” Luke stood up so fast that his chair fell. “She’s lying! She’s insane! Don’t listen to her, Imani—” he defended and looked over at the guards. “Guards! Take her out,” Luke yelled and they kept pulling Sarah out but she only laughed like a maniac. 30Morning came faster than anything else, the office homepage on social media filled with claims of theft. Suprisingly someone has leaked the project from Imani’s office. Not in the news but on the company’s page where everyone had access to. At 9:03 AM, an anonymous email was forwarded to the entire Imani Tech board, to all department heads, to Legal, to PR. The subject line:RE: PROJECT ECHO - STOLEN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?Inside was Sarah Velt’s photo of the credentials file. And a note:> “As a concerned employee and eye witness, I have reason to believe that PROJECT ECHO is not an original project. This is a stolen project from another tech company. His badge — IMANI TECH - HEAD OF RESEARCH - ROI MORGAN — sat on her desk.Imani stood by the window, arms crossed, looking at him.Now she understood why the new Head Researcher’s name sounds so familiar.“Are you Killian’s brother?” Imani asked directly. No hello, no welcome.Roi smiled. That same Morgan smile, but colder than Killian’s. “Took you long enough. I was wondering when you’d notice. We are alike, aren’t we?”“We are not—” Imani stopped herself. They were. Same jawline. Same height. Same dark hair. But Killian’s eyes were always tired, always carrying something. Roi’s eyes were empty and amused.“What brings you to my company? I checked your résumé and I saw your great works which made me wonder why you left them and came here?,” Imani said quietly Roi touched the back of his head unconsc
