MasukSelena froze. Hot blood rushed through her veins as her father’s presence loomed behind her. She glanced at Jenny, catching the pity in her friend’s eyes before Jenny quickly looked away.
The noisy restaurant suddenly felt like a graveyard. Customers laughed and clinked glasses, but Selena knew it was only a matter of seconds before they all turned to watch her get scolded—again. For the hundredth time that day, she wished Mikey would walk through the door. His money had a magic way of softening her father; as long as she was with him, lateness didn’t matter. Anger flared hot in her chest. Mikey had chosen work over her. Again. She’d begged for one day together, and he’d brushed her off with excuses. She’d told herself his job was important, that he was building their future—but standing here, facing potential humiliation, those excuses rang hollow. Mistrust crept in, sharp and unwelcome. Slowly, she turned, forcing a bright smile. “Hello, Dad!” His face was grave, etched with thin lines that hadn’t been there last year. A sneer twisted his mouth, and Selena’s legs felt rooted to the spot. She braced for the lecture. “Yes! Nice to see you too!” he growled. “Uh… I… I…” she stammered. Then his expression shifted. The sneer vanished, replaced by a genuine smile. “How are you feeling now, Selena?” It sounded more like a statement than a question. “You had me worried. I told Jennifer to call you, but she said you didn’t pick up.” Selena blinked, confused. The shift was so sudden she almost laughed. “Sorry, Dad. My phone was on silent. SHIT!” She glanced at the screen—8% battery. “It’s dying.” “What’s wrong?” he asked, smile widening. “Battery’s almost dead.” “Oh.” His grin grew. “Guess you had a great time with him.” “Yeah… it must’ve drained while I dozed off with the game on.” “Dozed? Game?” Surprise flickered across his face. “You mean you weren’t with him?” “Who?” “Michael Dangoat, of course.” “Uh… no. I was home.” His smile faded instantly, replaced by his usual stern business look. Selena understood why—without Mikey in the picture, she was just another employee running late. “Anyway, hurry and get to work. No time to waste. Make sure the Pillows are served properly, yeah, Jennifer?” He gestured toward the VIP section, where a well-dressed family waited. “Yes, sir!” Jenny replied. With that, he strode off to the far corner, already barking orders at a group of waitresses. Selena turned to Jenny, catching the quiet sigh of relief that escaped her friend. “He thought I was with Mikey,” Selena whispered. “That’s why he didn’t call me out.” “Yeah… I think so.” Jenny hesitated. “Do you think he really likes him, or is it just the money?” “I don’t know anymore.” Selena forced a grin to change the subject. “How’s business been?” “Same as always. But oh—!” Jenny grabbed Selena’s arms, eyes wide with excitement, pulling her back a step. Selena knew that look—something juicy. “Just some idiot who got too boozy and knocked wine glasses off Zendy’s tray—right onto me. Had to change my uniform and reapply perfume.” Selena finally took in her friend’s appearance: short, red-dyed dreads coiled tight, bright dark eyes, small nose above red lips that parted to show neat white teeth. The standard uniform looked fresh. “Oh no! Did anyone see?” “Everyone saw. I wanted to die. But then a prince charming saved me.” Jenny blushed. “He covered for me, made it look like nothing happened. Oh—and he caught me when I almost fell. By the time I cleaned up, he was gone. Didn’t even get to thank him.” Selena smiled. “You sweet thing. I’m sure he’ll come back. First time you’ve seen him?” “Yes!” Jenny answered before Selena finished. Selena opened her mouth to tease, but spotted her father across the room. “Dad’s watching. Better get moving.” “You bring your charger?” “Nope. Didn’t realize the battery was low till now.” “No problem. I have mine. Let’s change into your uniform first.” “Sure!” They wove through the crowded tables toward the staff room. Selena noticed something different about Jenny—a spark she hadn’t seen in ages, not since that awful breakup. Her friend was falling for someone again. As Jenny pushed open the dresser-room door, Selena hoped this time it was the right guy. Until she met him, though, she couldn’t fully approve. But deep down, watching Jenny glow, Selena felt a quiet ache. When was the last time someone made her feel that way—protected, seen, without strings or money involved? Maybe never.Just like any other Sunday, Selena curled herself comfortably in the blanket and was unwilling to get up. She would never get up in that early morning cold, and even if anybody bothered asking, the comfort of the bed over mucus would be her answer. But that was not all. Sundays were the only free days she had in a week. That meant she could get up at any time it pleased her. Selena rubbed her closed eyes when she felt something. Slowly, she tried to open them but ended up closing them again. Through the frame of the window, the rays of sunlight hit her so violently that she wished she had closed the curtains last night. Just as she was about to go down and close it, a knock sounded at the door. "Don't tell me you are still sleeping at this time, Sely" it was her younger sister, Bethy."Just when I thought this would be my best day" Selena mumbled. She opened the door and let Bethy in. "What?" she asked when Bethy kept on staring at her. "I hold nothing against you, except for t
You're kidding right babe? Just tell me you are not being serious" Selena rolled her eyes when she read the text message from her best friend, Jenny. She rubbed her fingers together and with a vicious snarl, she texted back. "Like really babe. The party is so boring". She was about to send it but on second thought, she decided to add it. "But that doesn't mean I'll spend the whole time texting with you, so bye for now. I'll tell you everything when I get back home", then she sent it. With a lazy sigh, she put the phone back in her purse and decided to pay full attention at the party again. Ever since Mikey brought her to the party, the only thing interesting she had done was being introduced to Mikey's rich friends. Oh, yeah, and listening to some sweet talks from one of the rich guests. In the next three hours after that sweet speech, Selena had been texting witph Jenny and even when she told her she couldn't continue talking anymore, Selena had begged and promised to buy her cof
Two million dollars? Did Jason hear correctly or was his mind playing tricks on him? The MC introduced him as the guest of honor, before thanking Angelina for donating two million dollars. Was it the same money he had given to her?Jason turned slowly as if a lump had suddenly grown on his neck and focused his gaze on her, hoping for any signs from her that it wasn't what he thought. But to his surprise, she didn't look his way or make any effort to explain anything to him. Her attention was glued to the MC, with a beaming smile on her. Jason turned away from the sight of Angelina before he became too enthralled in just watching her. Her smiles always had this effect on him but this time, he needed a straight mind in order to address the situation at hand. "...and that of course would be the last slot. Now ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together as we have a word from the guest of honor, sir Jason Tynara".Jason heard Boris Daren say. He didn't realize he'd spent quite much t
It took Jason and Angelina just about ten minutes to drive from the building to the hotel the party was supposed to be organized, but even at that distance, Jason found himself being accompanied by a convoy, a feat he never liked. When he had protested, Angelina reassured him that it was for their safety and protection. Jason had much pride in his rags-to-riches story and was particularly grateful for the riches and power that came with his billionaire status, but the fact that he could not move around without any bodyguards always made him uncomfortable. "But son there is a way you can walk around this" He could remember the conversation he had with Mr. Bransen a few months ago. "You do. How do I do it then?" Jason had asked."please do tell me…..""Well, the answer is simple. Get a coach and train your bones so tough that your security wouldn't matter anymore""Wait, you mean I should go to the gym.? But that doesn't…….""No son, not the gym. I mean get a teacher to teach you so
Selena was almost wordless when Mikey stopped the car a few meters away from the main entrance to the hotel. Instead of going down, she remained fixed as if pinned to her chair and gazed out the front door glass at what appeared to be security agents at the entrance. They seemed to be the search party who inspected the guests before letting them enter. Being five in sight, they wore black suits, dark sunglasses, and coiled tube earpieces. One of them had a data pad in his hand from which he seemed to ID the guests, while two others had hand-held metal detectors to scan those who had been approved by the data pad. The rest of the security agents were placed at the door and opened it as guests walked in. Nevertheless, it wasn't the security protocol that carried Selena's attention but the caliber of gusts that waited to be checked. The men and women were all dressed in clothes Selena had seen only on TV before. The hands of the men were adorned with watches that she knew were worth hun
"Baby! I'm almost done" Jason said frustratingly to Angelina."You've said that for almost Twenty four times in an hour already"She put her hand to her face and hissed "Oh gosh I can't believe this is happening right now"."But it's not that late. The party starts at 7 right? we can still make it" Jason assured."That's what you always say. I don't know if you care about me. You hardly have any time for me. I'll be waiting in the sitting room" Angelina picked up her purse and walked out of the room noisily in her high-heeled shoes and slammed the door behind her. Jason sighed, put down the shoe he had in his hand and sat on the bed. ''well, it isn't my fault we're late''. He said to himself though not aloud. The Jason that had been four years ago was different from the present one. Once, he thought rich people had no problems but looking at the expensive shoes and clothes in his closet, he soon realized he couldn't make a concrete choice on which to wear. Suits were considered the
The meal was perfect. It had been as Jason always felt back in those days when he ate good meals after spending the whole day without food. His mind wondered who had made the salad. 'Maybe it was Gina' he thought. But again, he changed his mind and went for ma'am Teresa.Ma'am Teresa had always been go
Selena Dundro didn't know whether she was properly cleaned nor cared to. In a super flash, she'd been to the bathroom and back now, found herself rubbing. "Hey take it easy sweetie" Jenny advised in her usual walkie-talkie voice. "I know, but I can't" she said as she adjusted her underpants. "If I w
"Are you still there baby?" Mikey's voice was etched with worry. "Y-Yes" "Good! are you coming?" Selena thought about it for a moment. But before she could answer, Mikey spoke again. "Oscar award-winning actress, Angelina Jolie would be there. Beyonce is coming too, Fritz Dizols would be there, Dr M
"Hey it's not fair" Jenny complained sulkily. "Oh, my sweet baby" Selena mocked. "But you are not as smart as me right?" She said dryly. "But we've been playing the game fairly Jenny. Only Selena has been too lucky to reach King very often" Veronica tried to reason with Jenny. "Too lucky you say?" S
