Tristan's POV

The response from Artemis' pack arrived barely a day after the marriage proposal letter left the palace.

‘Richard Whitmore, Alpha of the Artemis Pack, accepts His Majesty's proposal with gratitude and humility.’

I read it once and set it down beside the silver pendant on my desk. The little crescent moon caught the lamplight. I had not let it leave my sight in three weeks.

"A day," Kade said from the doorway, as if he could read my thoughts. "He didn't even pretend to consider it.

Tristan’s POVThe study door closed behind me and I stood in the corridor with my hand still on the handle, breathing like I had run ten miles.‘I am never letting you go.’I had meant every word. What I had not accepted was the way my chest tightened when she said she would never fall in love with me. Never. She had said it so easily with that small, stubborn chin lifted, and my wolf had thrown himself against my ribs as if she had struck him.A smile tugged at my lips. Interesting.“Your Majesty?”Kade stood at the end of the corridor, his expression carefully neutral. He had been waiting outside, and judging by the way his eyes moved from my face to the study door, he had heard just enough to become curious.“What?” I asked.“Are we leaving already?”I glanced at the door once more. “Yes.”Kade fell into step beside me as we walked towards the entrance. The moment we entered the sitting room, Alpha Richard hurried to his feet. His wife stood beside him, while his daughter was still

LAYLA’s POVFor a full three seconds, I forgot how to breathe. The man standing at the foot of my father's staircase was the same man who had held me in that dark room. The same icy blue eyes. The same face I had dreamed about every night since that day.Only now he wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing a tattoo along his forearm. Was I actually dreaming? The Lycan King? The same ruthless monster with the hideous scarred face who threw women out before sunrise?I looked at his face again, trying to find at least one flaw, but there was none except a sharp, devastating, ridiculous amount of handsome. What was I even thinking?I quickly composed myself and stopped midway down the stairs. "It's you again?" The words fell out of my mouth before my brain could stop them. "Why are you here?"Of course I had to pretend I didn't know. He had dared to call me a breeder, and the worst part? I actually felt like one, since I was already carrying his child, though I dared not sa

"He didn't even pretend to consider it.""Well, that was the purpose of the letter.""I know. I'm still not sure it was wise." He walked in and dropped into the chair opposite me. "As a breeder for the heir to the Lycan throne. Tristan, I've known you my whole life, and It almost felt like a motive when I read it.""If I had asked politely, he would have haggled." I turned the pendant over with my thumb. "A man like Richard values nothing he cannot sell. He sees a wolfless daughter who embarrasses him. If I call her my mate, he start

Layla's POVThree weeks after the worst day of my life, I was on my knees on the bathroom floor, throwing up my dinner. This was the third time in a row."It's stress," I whispered to myself. "Just stress."That word had become my favorite lie. It explained the nausea, the dizziness, and the way the smell of my stepmother's perfume made my stomach turn. It also explained why my body felt like it belonged to someone else, warmer and more sensitive than ever. But it did not explain why I kept dreaming about him. Every night it was the same. The moonlight spilling across the sheets. His hands, big and rough, mapping my skin like he had all the time in the world. His voice against my ear, low and hungry. Mine.I would wake up gasping, soaked in sweat, my thighs pressed together and my whole body aching for a man whose name I didn't even know.I rinsed my mouth and stared at myself in the mirror. My fingers drifted to the mark below my ear. It had never faded. If anything, it glowed a litt

Tristan’s POVI had spent the better part of the morning staring at a small silver crest on my desk.It was shaped like a crescent moon surrounded by three tiny stars, with a narrow line engraved through its center. I had found it on the floor of my hotel room after the woman who had turned my entire world upside down ran out of it.I still didn’t know her name or surname except the initials of L engraved behind the crest. I didn’t even get the chance to ask for her name, where she lived, or why the sight of her had made my wolf nearly tear through my skin. But I only knew one thing. She was my mate yet she had looked at me like I was a stranger who had wronged her, and I had never in my life felt so useless.I had hunted rogues across three territories and negotiated peace between packs that wanted each other dead. Yet I couldn't stop one woman from walking out on me. “How ironic!” I muttered to myself as I leaned back in my chair, dragging a hand over my face. The memory of her wi

Layla’s POVBy the time I reached home, my head was pounding, my feet hurt, and the memory of those icy blue eyes refused to leave my mind. Even Adrian never looked at me that way.I shook my head and sneaked in through the back doors. The first thing I noticed before heading up the stairs was the collection of beautifully wrapped boxes arranged across the sitting room.My stomach twisted. Was he really that shameless?I climbed the stairs and locked myself in the bathroom. I needed ten minutes, just ten, to be a person again. The water was scalding, but I didn't care. I leaned my forehead against the tiles and closed my eyes, and that was a mistake. Fragments of the night came rushing back. His hand sliding slowly up my thigh. His breath against my neck. His low, rough voice saying you smell really good while my body arched towards him like it had been waiting for him all along.Heat pooled low in my stomach and my knees nearly buckled. "Stop it," I whispered to myself, snapping the
