Cut the Crap

ROMY'S POV

I didn't sleep at all that night. I lay awake staring at the photo until three in the morning, and then I deleted it, and then I wished I hadn't.

Paloma had to be behind it. She had laughed too hard when I said Brice didn't show up, and she had wanted that lipstick far too badly.

So at ten the next morning, I took a taxi to Bel Air.

The Pembroke Residence wasn't a house you could see from the road. There was a black iron gate, a long wall covered in ivy and a guardhouse with two men in dark suits who watched the taxi pull up without blinking.

I rolled down the window. "Hi. I'm here to see Mr. Pembroke."

"Name?"

"Romilly Ashcombe."

The guard checked his tablet, and then he checked it again. "You're not on the list."

"I know, but I was told to come in three days, and I need to speak to him today. It's important."

"Ma'am, nobody gets through this gate without clearance."

"Can you call him? Please. Tell him it's the woman from the courthouse."

The guards looked at each other, and something in their faces told me they had heard a lot of women say a lot of things at this gate.

"Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

The taxi driver was already sighing. I was reaching for my purse when a black car came up the drive behind us and stopped.

The back window slid down.

It was him. In daylight he was somehow more intimidating, all sharp lines and dark eyes, and he looked at me through the window with no surprise at all.

"Eager already?" he said. "You couldn't even wait three days to move into my house?"

"That's not why I'm here."

"Get in."

I paid the taxi driver, who looked relieved to see me go, and climbed into the back seat beside him. The car smelled of leather and something expensive. He sat on the far side of the seat with his phone in his hand and didn't look at me while the gate swung open.

"Mr. Pembroke," I said. "Sir. I need to tell you something, and I need you to let me finish."

He kept scrolling.

"I'm not the woman you were supposed to marry. I was waiting at the courthouse for someone else. His name is Brice Tolliver, and he never showed up, and you grabbed my wrist before I could.."

He laughed, low and short.

"Cut the crap."

"I'm serious."

"So was my grandmother, for six months." Finally he looked at me, and I wished he hadn't. "You signed the paper. You took the card. And now you're at my gate a day after the wedding, telling me it was all a mistake. Do you think I haven't seen this before?"

"Seen what?"

"A woman negotiating." He turned back to his phone. "Whatever you want, put it in writing and give it to Hollis."

"I don't want anything from you."

"Everyone wants something from me, Mrs. Pembroke. The ones who say they don't just want more."

"That's not my name."

"It is now." He didn't look up. "You made sure of that yesterday."

The car stopped in front of a white stone house so large that I couldn't see where it ended.

A man in a dark suit opened my door before I could reach for the handle, and Evander was already walking up the front steps without waiting for me. Inside, he left me in a living room with a ceiling twice the height of any I had ever stood under. A gray-haired housekeeper who introduced herself as Mrs. Quarles brought me a glass of water, and she studied my face the whole time she set it down. I didn't drink it. Through an open doorway, I could hear him on a call, speaking in short, cold sentences about a board meeting in New York.

My hands were shaking, so I did the only thing I could think of. I stepped into the hallway, where he couldn't hear me, and I called Brice.

If I could get Brice to admit it, if I could get him to say he was the one I was supposed to marry, then this man would have to believe me.

It rang four times. Then, for the first time in two days, he answered.

"Romy." He sounded bored. "Stop calling me."

"Brice, where were you? I waited for two hours. You need to come and explain to.."

"Explain what? Listen. No matter how much you paid, I was never going to marry you."

"What are you talking about? We had a contract."

"We had a joke." He laughed, and somebody laughed with him in the background. "Babe, she wants to know about the contract."

Someone else came closer to the phone, and I knew who it was before she said a word.

"Tell her about the deposit," Paloma said.

"Your deposit?" Brice said. "We used it to buy her a bag."

They were both laughing when I hung up.

I stood in that hallway with the phone against my chest. Five thousand dollars, almost everything I had saved in two years, and my sister had spent it on a bag. There had never been an agency, and there had never been a groom. She had sent me to that courthouse in a white dress so she could watch me get stood up.

And instead, I had married a stranger who thought I was a liar.

"Paloma," I whispered. "How could you?"

"Who's Paloma?"

I spun around.

Evander Pembroke was standing at the end of the hallway with his phone still in his hand. I didn't know how long he had been there.

  • Accidentally Married As The Wrong Bride   The Extra

ROMY'S POVThe soundstage in Culver City had been dressed as a hospital ward, and I had been dressed as Nurse Number Two.My three lines were on a card in my pocket. Doctor, she's crashing. I'll get the cart. Should I call her family? I had said them to the bathroom mirror at six that morning, while Evander slept, and again to the driver, who pretended not to hear.Tamsin Holt arrived at nine-thirty with two assistants, a personal makeup artist and an iced coffee nobody else was allowed to touch. She walked past the row of extras without looking at any of us. Then she stopped and came back."Oh my God," she said. "It's Raff's leftovers."Somebody behind the camera laughed. Then a few more people laughed, mostly because she was the lead and they wanted to keep their jobs."Hi, Tamsin," I said. "Congratulations on your engagement."Her smile slipped for half a second, and then she put it back on. "Thanks. It's a real ring, you know. Not the kind you have to film yourself crying over."S

  • Accidentally Married As The Wrong Bride   Mr. President Doesn't Like Your Clothes

ROMY'S POVI read the message four times, and it still said one hundred thousand dollars.I had never seen that many zeroes in my own account. I had barely seen them in anyone's. The last time I checked my balance, the morning of the courthouse, it had been two hundred and twelve dollars and some change, and I'd decided I could live on instant noodles until the first video with Brice went viral. My phone rang while I was still staring at it. It was an unknown number, and I almost let it go to voicemail before I remembered that every unknown number in my life lately had turned out to matter."Mrs. Pembroke? It's Hollis.""Hollis. Hi." I sat up straighter, though he couldn't see me. "I think there's been a mistake. Someone put a hundred thousand dollars into my account.""No mistake, ma'am. That's your weekly allowance for living expenses. It will arrive every Sunday." He said it calmly, without the slightest change in his voice. "There's one more thing. Mr. President has arranged for a

  • Accidentally Married As The Wrong Bride   Just the Number

EVANDER'S POVHollis was waiting in the back of the car with two tablets and a folder."Good morning, sir. The New York team moved the call to ten, and the Singapore numbers came in overnight. They're better than we feared, but not by much." He held out the first tablet. "And about the Audi from the other night, I've started..""Later."He closed his mouth and put the tablet on his knee. The car went down the drive and through the gate. I watched the canyon go past the window and tried to think about Singapore, and I thought about my wife instead.Last night, in the back booth of the club on Sunset, Wells had leaned across the table and asked me her name. It should have been the easiest question anyone asked me all week. I had opened my mouth to answer, and I'd realized I didn't know it. I had signed a marriage certificate beside her, and I had never once looked at the line below mine. I'd covered it with a drink, and Wells had laughed at me for ten minutes.Somewhere around the botto

  • Accidentally Married As The Wrong Bride   Don't Come Closer

ROMY'S POVI woke up alone again, but this time his side of the bed was still warm. For a few seconds I didn't move. I lay there with the sheet pulled up to my chin, staring at the ceiling and listening to the shower run on the other side of the wall, and I waited to feel ashamed. I didn't. I felt rested, and a little sore, and more awake than I had been in months. Then the shower stopped, and I remembered that he still thought I was somebody else.I got dressed before he came out. I pulled on jeans and a sweater, tied my hair up and went downstairs before I could lose my nerve, because if I waited for him in that bedroom, I knew I would never find the right words.Mrs. Quarles had laid breakfast out in the glass room off the kitchen, with eggs, toast, cut fruit and a pot of coffee big enough for six people. I poured myself a cup and sat down. My hands wanted something to do, so I buttered a piece of toast I had no intention of eating. He came down ten minutes later in a dark suit, wi

  • Accidentally Married As The Wrong Bride    Drunk Enough

ROMY'S POVWhen I woke up, his side of the bed was already cold.I found Mrs. Quarles in the kitchen, slicing fruit nobody had asked for. She told me Mr. President had left for the office at six, because New York had called and something was on fire."Not literally," she added, when she saw my face.I spent the whole day waiting for him to come home and say Brice's name. Every time a car came up the drive, I went to the window, and every time it was a delivery. At two o'clock, Paloma texted me.How's Atlanta? Send pics of the set!!I stared at the message for a long time. Then I took a photo of my coffee cup against the plain white wall of the breakfast room, where nothing could tell her which city I was in, and sent it.Long day. No pics allowed on set, sorry. She replied in less than a minute. Cute cup. Which hotel?I put the phone face down on the table and didn't answer.By nine that night, he still wasn't back. I ate dinner alone in a dining room built for twenty people, and Mrs.

  • Accidentally Married As The Wrong Bride   The Room With a View

ROMY'S POV"Ma'am," the driver said quietly, "is anyone supposed to be following you today?"I didn't turn around. "Silver Audi?""Yes, ma'am.""No. Nobody is supposed to follow me."He nodded once, and that was all. At the next light he waited until it turned red and then went through it anyway. He took two quick turns into a residential street and a third up a narrow road that climbed into the hills. When I finally looked back, there was nothing behind us but a gardener's truck."Lost him in Bel Air," the driver said. "He'll know which neighborhood, but not which house."That was almost worse. Brice knew I had gone to Bel Air, so Paloma would know within the hour, and Paloma knew I was supposed to be on a plane to Atlanta. The gate opened as soon as we reached it this time, and the guards didn't ask my name. Mrs. Quarles met me at the front door. She smiled warmly, but her eyes went over my face again, slowly, the same careful look she had given me two days before."Welcome home, Mrs
