LOGINDOMINIC
I was two seconds away from killing her.
The goddess knew it was taking all the self control and discipline I'd mastered in my twenty nine years on earth to keep from grabbing the Omega and flinging her halfway across the banquet hall.
Instead of the hiss that hovered impatiently on the tip of my tongue, a fake hollow laugh escaped my lips as I shook hands with the next set of Alphas that had just arrived.
“Alphas James, Newton, Saul…good to see you all,” I welcomed them.
“We wouldn't miss it for the world,” Newton said in an overtly animated tone.
Beneath their smiles I could sense the questioning looks hanging in the air. The slight raise of eyebrows as they glanced at the Omega before heading to their seats.
They were laughing at me.
Hell, the entire fucking world was laughing at me right now.
The news of my mating ceremony was enough of an embarrassment. Now, I was forced to publicly claim a mate I despised. As though that wasn't bad enough, I had to do it with a phony smile on my face the entire time.
It was humiliating.
I wrapped one arm around her waist and felt her stiffen. My Lycan, seemingly oblivious to this disaster of a night, jumped at the close proximity and that tempting scent of hers wafted past my nose, almost prompting me to nuzzle her neck.
I forcefully subdued my Lycan and pulled the Omega even closer to me, still keeping my hand on her waist. I would hold my damn breath if I had to, as long as I got this over with.
I smiled as I motioned for the music to be turned down.
“Keep your chin up and stop fucking embarrassing me,” I hissed at her under my breath, the smile still plastered on my face.
She made a sleazy attempt to straighten up, but she seemed to have a perpetual slouch, with that deer in headlights look about her.
I hated to admit it but she confused me. There was such an alarming disparity between who I thought she was and the attitude she portrayed.
Didn't she cunningly force herself into this position?
She'd gotten what she wanted, and naturally, she should be happier, flaunting her new title and trying to rub shoulders with every person of importance.
But instead she was just…there. Aloof. Almost scared, even.
What game was she playing?
I was yanked out of my thoughts when I realized the music had faded. The hall was silent now, waiting for my cue. And I had just spent long seconds staring at her.
Clearing my throat, I raised a champagne glass.
“Alphas, Betas, honored guests, I welcome you all. As you all know, tonight is a night of celebration. The ancient laws decree that a King is incomplete without a Queen, a Lycan or Alpha incomplete without his Luna.”
The idea of shooting myself in the throat had never been more appealing.
Nevertheless, I continued.
“So, it is my honor to introduce you all to my chosen mate–”
I froze. The realization that I did not know her name hit me in the face.
Shit.
To me she was just an Omega. A nobody. It didn't occur to me that she even had a name. I glanced at her as if seeing her for the first time.
“Uh…My Queen and Luna of Whitewolf Pack,” I quickly added to conceal what would have otherwise been an embarrassing situation.
The entire hall burst into applause, but I could feel the bewilderment in the air.
At this rate, I wasn't even sure I could make it through the night.
ADELINE
I wasn't sure I'd ever been so overwhelmed in my life. The banquet hall was crowded with people, some of them staring at me curiously, others with disdain and a few regarding me with amusement.
It was a disaster, being paraded before a pack that hated me.
To my greatest shock, Alpha Dominic seemed to be taking it better than I expected. I watched him fleet across the hall, greeting guests, making polite conversations and laughing at intervals.
When he'd wrapped his arms around me earlier, I'd felt a shiver run down my spine. Fear and an emotion I knew I definitely shouldn't be feeling made me tremble.
But then he shot me a warning and I knew this was just all for show. I'd heard what the oracle said that day at the mating ceremony. The bond could not be broken. But of course, the rumors had spread, so he was forced to play into the illusion.
I was just a pawn.
A temporary one at that. And there was no telling what would happen to me once he was able to break the bond.
I swallowed and tried to keep my head up like he instructed. But it was almost impossible. I'd been a servant for so many years, so this sudden transition to Luna was a lot to take in. I couldn't even beckon to a waiter for a drink.
If anything, I envisioned a time when I was the one serving drinks.
“Stand here until I return. I have to mingle,” Alpha Dominic's voice floated into my thoughts.
“You're leaving? Where are you going?” I asked panickedly.
He regarded me with irritation, making me shrink back.
“I-I'm sorry..” I apologized, but he had already walked away.
Without him by my side, I felt exposed. I rubbed my arms and retreated to a less crowded corner of the hall, praying for this to be over with. I felt anxious, jumpy and exhausted.
My eyes were lazily scanning the crowd when they landed on a familiar figure in the crowd. A man clad in blue traditional wear; the same one I had laundered so many times before.
I stood up straighter, refusing to believe my eyes.
It couldn't be.
But how could I ever forget the face that still haunted my nightmares.
I let out a strangled gasp. All the air drained from my lungs as I staggered backwards.
Hilton.
ADELINEI was in the middle of washing clothes in the basement when a man in white robes appeared. He didn't say a word, just pointed toward the stairs. I knew he was one of the oracle’s disciples. My hands were raw from the powdery soap and the cold water, but I wiped them on my apron and followed him without asking questions. I knew better than to argue with a summon. The walk up to the high tower was long. My legs felt heavy, and my breath was shallow by the time we reached the top. I hadn't been eating much since they moved me to the servant wing, and the constant work was starting to drain me. I felt a slight dizziness as I stepped into the round room, but I forced myself to stand straight. I couldn't afford to look weak. The oracle was standing by a large silver mirror. He didn't turn around when I entered. He just stared into the glass, as though looking for something in it. "Come closer," he said, motioning forward."B-But Alpha Dominic said the ritual was stopped. Why am I h
DOMINICThe question hung in the air like a foul scent. “When is she leaving?” I finally looked up from the documents on my desk. My pen hovered over a trade agreement as I stared at Princess Vivian. She was leaning over my desk, her dress cut low enough to be deliberately provocative. She was beautiful, certainly, every bit the princess she should be. But as I looked at her, my wolf remained silent. There was no pull, no spark of recognition. I felt nothing but growing irritation.I knew I had to learn to change that. In just a short time, she would be my wife. I couldn’t snap at her on Adeline’s account. That wouldn’t be right. But for now, I was in the mood to entertain a“Princess Vivian,” I said. “I believe I told you to get settled and comfortable. I do not remember inviting you to audit my household staff or my guest list.”Vivian didn't flinch. If anything, she leaned closer, a small, confident smirk playing on her lips. “Oh, Your Majesty. We both know she isn't a guest.
VIVIAN “Send word across immediately if you need anything, alright?” “Yes Father, I will,” I spoke, trying not to roll my eyes again. This was the third time he was saying that and I was tired of responding, but I knew he meant well. Perks of being an only child, I guess. He pinched my cheeks and pulled me into a hug. “Your mother and I will miss your presence.”This time I actually rolled my eyes. “You’ve both seen me for years. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Plus, you’ll both be here for the wedding. It’s happening, right? You promised, Father. I don’t want to be embarrassed again.”I folded my arms and looked away. Every time I remembered that I was replaced by that stupid, pale. white haired Omega, my blood began to boil. Never in my life had I been faced with such humiliation. The whole kingdom laughed at me, gossiped about me, and spread the most ridiculous stories concerning me. I couldn’t even face my friends after it happened. After bragging for months about how I would be get
DOMINICThe air in my study was thick with silence and tension as I sat behind my desk, my hands clasped together. Across from me, Boris sat with his legs crossed, looking every bit the powerful Alpha he was. He was a man who valued tradition and strength above all else, and that was the very reason I had agreed to this in the first place. We were here to discuss the alliance. Our packs had been destined to join for years, a union of blood that would make our territories untouchable. But the accident of my mating bond with Adeline had thrown everything into chaos.“The preparations are moving forward, Alpha Boris,” I said. “My scouts have already mapped out the shared borders. The trade agreements are being drafted as we speak. This alliance is the future of our people, as we already discussed. It took a while to kick off, but I assure you that it is now in motion.”He nodded slowly, but his eyes remained sharp. He leaned forward, tapping a thick finger against the desk. “The trade ro
ADELINEI stood frozen at the door. I looked at Princess Vivian, and my breath caught in my throat. She was even more beautiful up close, but her amber eyes were filled with a dark anger that made my skin crawl.A heavy silence enveloped the room as she looked at the packed bags by the door and let out a cruel laugh. “So finally, the stray dog has been sent out,” she said, eyeing me with disgust. “I must say, I’m surprised the Lycan King even allowed you to sleep in the same room as him. A dirty, useless Omega laying in royal sheets? That’s disgusting. But it’s fine. I’ll have everything you touched burned and replaced when I move in.”My chest tightened. She was moving into Dominic’s room? That was…sudden. I tried not to think about it too much, but it wouldn’t leave my mind. My heart felt like it was being ripped into two. I gripped the hem of my shirt until my knuckles turned white. I felt weak and tired, but I forced myself to stand straight. I did not want her to see me trembl
ADELINEPrincess Vivian did not see me. She walked up the stone steps of the palace with her head held high, her dress billowing behind her. She moved with so much grace that it made my chest ache. The guards bowed low as she passed them, their faces full of respect. They didn't look at her with the disgust or the anger they usually showed me. To them, she was the true Luna. I stood there for a long time, frozen in place. My legs felt weak, and my heart was heavy. I told myself not to care. I told myself that I knew this would happen eventually. From the moment the bond formed, the elders had been screaming for her return. But knowing it and seeing it were two different things. Seeing her beauty and her confidence made me feel small. It made me feel like the mistake everyone said I was.Despite my attempts to stay strong, I felt the hot sting of tears in my eyes. I turned away from the entrance and hurried inside through a side door. I didn't want to run into the welcoming party.
DOMINIC I took a sip of champagne, my eyes roaming the hall in search of Adeline. When I didn't see her in the spot where she'd been standing last, I straightened up with a jolt, my senses on full alert.Although I sent her off to mingle with the crowd, my eyes had been trailing her discreetly, fol
DOMINIC I was almost running by the time I reached the training field, my chest heaving. But when I neared the spot where the two of them were standing, my movements came to an abrupt halt. I'd barged out here without thinking it through. But now that I thought about it, I had no idea why I was h
ADELINEI woke up with the rays of sun from the windows nearly blinding me. Yawning, I rubbed my eyes in an effort to wake myself up, wondering why the floor suddenly felt so comfortable. But when I tried to stretch out my arms, I felt a resistance holding me back. When I blinked away the sleep t
ADELINEI was out of breath by the time I reached the pack armory where I'd been told Grant was. He was inspecting some of the weapons when I barged in, my chest heaving. “Adeline? What's going on? Is everything okay?”“Yes, yes,” I said, standing upright in an effort to look casual. “I was just l
