LOGINJace
The hallway falls silent, but not the usual kind. The kind that comes after a bomb explodes. Every face turns toward me, mouths hanging open, phones frozen halfway in the air. Nobody expected those words. Hell… neither did I. My heart pounds so loudly in my chest, I wait for the words to come out, to deny her, to say i didn't mean everything i said. That Skye is not my girlfriend. Yet i remain standing, not denying, not trying to take back what i said. Tiffany blinks, then she laughs loudly—sharp, almost hysterical. “You are joking.” I don't answer, and the smile slowly fades from her face. “Jace?” “I meant what I said,” i utter coldly. Another wave of whispers spreads through the hallway. “What the hell?” “He dumped Tiffany.” “Did he seriously choose Skye Bennett?” “I thought he couldn't stand her.” Neither did I. Or at least, that’s what everyone believed. Not anymore. If they are all going to cause her pain, then i won't accept it. They have to go through me first. Especially Tiffany, who still watches me like I've suddenly grown a second head. Tiffany marches toward me until she’s standing inches away, her cold eyes settle on me before she spits. “You embarrassed me.” “You were humiliating someone who couldn't defend herself.” “So you're defending her now?” she laughs, the sound tears through the dorm. I glance at Skye. She hasn't moved; she's standing exactly where I left her, one hand gripping the wall—as if it's the only thing keeping her upright. Her cheek is already turning red from Tiffany’s slap. Something twists painfully inside my chest, and I look away. I've seen that look before—years ago, back when we were kids. Skye Bennett always cried silently, never loud enough for anyone to notice. Except… I noticed. Always. She thought no one did. She made sure. Yet i did. Because it maybe sound stupid but i was always watching. Whenever she thinks no one was there to watch her crumble. I watched. My jaw tightens. Tiffany studies my face before letting out another bitter laugh. “You actually care.” “No,” the answer slips out too quickly, too automatically, too falsely. “I don't just like bullies.” She scoffs. “Since when?” Since… I stop before finishing. That answer isn’t for her—it's for no one. The hallway grows noisier as more students spill out of their rooms, phones everywhere. Every second, someone records another video. Perfect. Before lunch, the entire campus will know—exactly what I want. Everyone needs to know that anyone who touches her answers to me. I'm the only one who’s ever bullied her; no one else has that right. No one. Except me. Tiffany folds her arms. “So that’s it? We broke up, and suddenly she’s replacing me?” My voice stays calm. “I already told you, it’s over.” Her eyes widen. “You are lying.” I shrug. “If thinking that makes you feel better, go ahead.” She searches my face for a crack, a smile, anything that shows this is one of my usual jokes. She finds nothing. Her expression crumbles slowly. “You slept with her…” “I did.” A chorus of shocked gasps ripples through the hallway. My eyes drift to Skye. She’s staring at me as if I’ve completely lost my mind. Honestly, maybe I have. Because five minutes ago, I had no intention of making a scene—I only wanted everyone to leave. Then Tiffany posted those pictures. I saw how Skye looked at the floor—as if she wanted it to swallow her whole. And before I could stop myself, the words were out: “She’s my girlfriend.” The biggest lie I've ever told. Or maybe the lie I wanted to be true. I push the thought away before it can settle. Not happening. Not in this lifetime. Not when the only person she’s ever looked at is my brother. I learned that years ago—the first time she smiled at Ethan, the first time she saw Ethan pass by and looked right through him, as if I wasn’t standing there. Some things never change. So why does it bother me now? Why did I get so angry when he rejected her last night? Or when she hit the floor and laughter erupted around her? Behind me, I hear the faintest whisper, “Jace…” Her voice is shaky, broken. I close my eyes for a brief second before opening them again. There’s no taking it back now. I look at the crowd. “I meant every word. You all should know she belongs to me now. Nobody bullies her—no one ever again.” Another noise erupts, and through it, a familiar voice cuts through the crowd: “What the hell is going on here?” Heads turn. Ethan. He pushes through the sea of students, his eyes flicking from Tiffany to Skye, then to me. Confusion slowly shifts to disbelief. “What did I just walk into?”Skye Jace is not wearing the football jersey anymore. Instead, he has on a plain black T-shirt that clings to his broad shoulders, his damp hair pushed back as though he’d just showered. The setting sun cast long shadows across the empty stadium, making his gray eyes look almost silver. These things never affected me before. I've known Jace since forever and I never noticed how breathtaking he is. What the hell is wrong with me? I shake my head, refusing to succumb to this stupidity. Jace looks at me without surprise. “I knew you would come.” The confidence in his voice immediately irritates me. “You are so full of yourself.” The corner of his mouth twitches, “Thanks for the compliment.” I fold my arms, “I haven't even agreed.” “No? Then why are you here? Miss me?” My nose wrinkles in disgust, I would rather jump off the bridge. I open my mouth to say something. Nothing comes out. Yet his question hangs in the air. Why am I here? After several awkward seco
Skye “I won't do it.” The words leave my mouth before I can second-guess them. Jace doesn't react. He watches me with those unreadable gray eyes, as if he’d expected that answer all along. “I’m not going to pretend to be your girlfriend Jace,” I say, making sure he heard me quite well. Silence falls. The breeze sweeps across the football field, lifting loose strands of my hair into my face. Around us, the last two players are leaving practice, throwing curious glances our way before disappearing into locker rooms. Jace finally slips his phone back into his pockets “Fine.” I blink, “Fine?” “You made your choice.” his voice is calm. Too calm. He brushes past me without another word. For a second, I simply stand there, staring after him. That’s it? No sarcastic remark. No argument. No trying to convince me. He just…. Walks away. Something about it unsettles me far more than if he’d kept fighting. My eyes follow his retreating figure until he disappears bene
Jace The first thing Mason does is punch me in the shoulder. Hard. “What the hell was that for?” I shove him away. He grins, “For making the greatest announcement in Royal Haven history.” The rest of them burst into laughter. We had barely finished football practice when every single phone on the field started buzzing. Nobody cared about the drill anymore. Nobody cared about the championship. They only cared about one thing. Me. I grab my water bottle and empty half of it down my throat. “So….”Logan drawls, throwing an arm around my shoulders. “You have finally gotten yourself a girlfriend?” “I’ve had girlfriends.” “Not the one you announced to the entire campus.” The guys whistle. Mason pulls out his phone, “Listen to this,” he clears his throat dramatically, “Jace Knight publicly claims mysterious freshman after dumping queen bee Tiffany Bentley.” Another person whistles. Logan laughs, “Man, you’ve got the entire campus losing its mind.” I snatch t
Skye Kimberly’s face pales. “Skye…” “I have to.” “I can’t pretend to be his girlfriend.” “He’ll get over it.” “So will the school.” Before either of them can argue, my phone vibrates inside my pocket. Once. Twice. Three times. I frown. Slowly, I pull it out and The screen lights up. ROYAL HAVEN STUDENT FORUM PINNED POST Official announcement. Jace Knight: “ Skye Bennett is my girlfriend. Anyone who has a problem with that can deal with me.” Below it, Over two thousand likes. Hundreds of comments. And still climbing. My blood runs cold. Kimberly leans over my shoulder. “Oh…” Chloe reads the screen. “He actually meant it.” I stare at my phone so long my eyes begin to burn. What sort of problem is this? Even after the screen goes black, I still continue to stare at it. Several moment pass, nobody speaks. Not me. Not Chloe. Not Kimberly. The only sound is the distant whistle from the football field. Kimberly is the first to break the silence. “He actually posted it.”
Skye I jerk away from Jace so quickly that my shoulder slams into the wall. “Ouch.” Heat floods my face. Chloe’s eyes dart between us—Jace and me. His hand still rests against the wall where my head had been just seconds ago. Kimberly slowly blinks. “You two were about to kiss.” “We were not!” I nearly shout. Jace doesn’t deny it. He simply pushes himself away from the wall and stuffs both hands into his pockets. Kimberly points dramatically between us. “You.” Then at me. “You.” Then back at him. “What exactly is going on here?” I open my mouth. Nothing comes out because, honestly, I don’t know. Jace answers instead. “We were talking.” Kimberly snorts. “Really? Because from where I was standing, it looked like one very intense conversation.” Jace merely shrugs. “If that’s what you want to call it.” I shoot him a glare. “This is your fault.” “I know.” “You’ve completely ruined my life!” “I know.” “And you don’t even care!” He looks at me for a second, long enough to
Skye I don’t know how long I stand there. Five minutes. Maybe ten. The hallway is so quiet I can hear the ticking of the old clock hanging above the stairwell. Then, the sound of footsteps echoes. Heavy. Unhurried. I don’t have to look up. I already know who it is. Jace. He stops a few feet away. Neither of us speaks. The silence stretches until it becomes unbearable. Finally, I lift my head. “What was that?” His eyebrows lift. “What was what?” “Don’t play dumb.” “I’m not.” “You told everyone I’m your girlfriend!” “So?” “So?” My voice rises in disbelief. “You don’t get to decide something like that!” He shrugs, completely unfazed. “It worked.” “It worked?” I almost laugh. “You call this working?” “Tiffany shut up.” “At the cost of my reputation!” He folds his arms. “Your reputation was already gone the second she posted those pictures.” His words hit like a slap. I stare at him. “You’re unbelievable.” “I’m realistic.” “No.” I shake my head. “You’re cruel.” A muscl
