Chapter 2

Autor: Sage
"You and Lyra planned this, didn't you? You agreed to make it sound worse than it is?"

Theodore's expression darkened. He could not stand being challenged by a doctor.

"Lyra, stop pretending. Every time this happens, you sleep it off and wake up fine."

Hearing him say my name took me back to the day they hid my emergency medication in an ice bucket.

When the attack hit, I collapsed and struggled on the floor for more than ten minutes.

Theodore stood over me with Eliana in his arms.

"Answer me, Lyra! Which do you love more: me or your own life?"

I told him we were mates and that I loved him, but I wanted to live, too.

He left the decision to Eliana.

"Ana, sweetheart, you decide."

That day, I knelt at Eliana's feet for five minutes.

She made me swear that whenever she needed Theodore, I would never get in the way.

I clenched my teeth and never gave in.

Only after I was admitted did Theodore take my hand and apologize. "I'm sorry, Lyra! I misjudged how far to take it. I promise there won't be a next time."

He had made the same promise after each of the first ten tests.

Each time, I chose to believe there was still a place for me in his heart.

As they loaded me into the ambulance, Theodore picked up the emergency kit my father had put together for me.

Inside were my medications, heat packs, and a note listing everything my father wanted me to remember.

"Lyra, how many times do I have to tell you! Don't carry this around. People will think their Luna is frailer than an Omega!"

He always found something to criticize. Then he tossed the kit into the trash.

I had carried that bag for twelve years. When its zipper broke, he once stitched it back together himself.

When my father gave him the kit, he asked Theodore to take good care of me.

And now he did not even hesitate before tossing away the one thing that could save my life.

"I'll buy you a better one. Be ready tomorrow."

He knew perfectly well what my father's kit meant to me.

It was all I had left of home after coming to Westridge!

As the ambulance pulled away, I saw through the side window that Eliana had held her hand out to Theodore.

He bent over Eliana's hand, blowing on the scratch, his eyes soft with concern.

What happened to me did not matter.

By the time we reached the hospital, I was drifting in and out of consciousness.

The catheter bag filled with dark brown urine.

Acute hemolysis. Kidney damage. Severe anemia.

Any one of them could kill me.

Yet at one in the morning, messages from the pack kept lighting up my phone.

Eliana's friends had edited footage of me kneeling, begging, and crying into a video.

They had given it a humiliating title: "The Luna's Second-to-Last Test Before the Marking Ceremony."

"That's exactly what she needs. Play it tomorrow, too!"

"She needs to learn her place. Better now than after she starts giving Eliana trouble!"

Right after that, a message came in from Theodore.

"How are you? Don't be late tomorrow. Be good! You embarrassed me in front of everyone today. Behave tomorrow, and I'll let you keep what's left of your dignity. Cooperate with Eliana, keep her happy, and the marking ceremony will go smoothly."

  • After He Left Me to Freeze, I Rejected Him as My Mate   Chapter 14

A year later, I returned to the hospital for a follow-up.The walk-in freezer was being dismantled. Its steel door had been removed and left beside the road. There were scratch marks all over it.They were the marks of my desperate struggle inside. Then someone called my name. "Lyra."Theodore stood at a distance beside the road.Over the past year, he had not looked for another mate.I heard he had started therapy and, to everyone's surprise, was working to help the poorest wolves in his pack.A gust of wind swept past.By reflex, he took a step toward me. He saw me take a step back, and he stopped. "Did your follow-up go well?""Everything was fine."He lowered his head. His voice came out rough. "Good."He pulled a key from his pocket. It was the key to the freezer from that day. After the trial, Theodore had taken it with him."I don't know what to do with this key."He watched me nervously."Throw it away."Theodore closed his hand around the key. "Five minutes after you went in,

As the investigations concluded, Eliana and Theodore found themselves face-to-face at trial.Eliana still had not given up."You don't actually think that handing over evidence will make Lyra love you again, do you?""No.""Then why help her?""Because I wronged her."Eliana gave a mocking laugh. "You never used to see it that way. You thought she would never leave you. You said she'd die before she ever left you."Theodore slapped her.Eliana clutched her cheek and snapped, "What gives you the right to hit me? You planned the game. You hid the key. When she was on her knees begging me, nobody was more excited than you. Theodore, you and I are exactly the same."He could not argue.Because every word of it was true. They had enabled each other and kept raising the stakes. One wanted to test whether I would ever leave. The other wanted to test which of them mattered more.In the end, they both got their answers.Eliana was held primarily responsible for the intentional harm, the unlawfu

The negotiations failed.I rejected both families' private settlement offers and insisted on taking the case to court. The police continued investigating the criminal side of the case.Mr. Hale formally filed the civil suit. The people who had mocked and jeered at me deleted their videos and distanced themselves. The standing Theodore valued above all else collapsed overnight.A week later, he came to my room at the rehabilitation center carrying a cardboard box.Inside were the things I had left in the home we were supposed to share. The emergency kit, the records from every hospitalization, the handwritten letter I had given him, and the tie I had chosen for him.A line of words was embroidered along the tie in fine stitching.Love is two hearts beating as one.At the very bottom lay an old medical record showing that after the fourth game, when I was pushed into the fountain, I had gone into cardiac arrest.Theodore's voice was painfully hoarse. "Was that when you started wanting to

Once the police investigation began, Eliana panicked. She blamed everything on Theodore. She claimed he had planned it all, including the freezer test.Hoping to save herself, she volunteered more evidence. One recording dated back to the planning of the seventh game.Theodore asked, "If she gets on her knees and begs you, will you feel sorry for her?"Eliana laughed out loud. "No. I want to see how low she'll sink for you."Theodore laughed too. "Then let's keep the game going a little longer."The criminal investigation continued.Meanwhile, the settlement conference Mr. Hale had arranged went ahead. Both sets of parents, the packmates who took part and spread the videos, and the attorneys for both sides attended. The large screen played footage from all twelve games, one after another. No one who had laughed in those videos could hold their head up in the room.Mr. Hale read each category of damages aloud.Medical costs.Rehabilitation costs.Damages for emotional distress.Damages

Three days later, everyone involved received a formal demand letter. The pack erupted. Some said they had only watched for fun.Others begged me through tears to go easy on them and not ruin their lives.I watched without sympathy.I gave them the same indifference they had shown when I begged them to open the freezer. They repented only because they feared the judgment ahead.Eliana's parents arrived at the ward with their arms full of gifts.Eliana's mother dropped to her knees as soon as she entered. "Lyra, Eliana is young and impulsive. You're alive. Don't ruin her life over one misunderstanding."I looked at Mr. Hale. "Escort her out."Eliana's mother dragged herself on her knees to my bedside. "You're alive. Why are you trying to kill her?"My father gave a humorless laugh. "My daughter survived because help arrived in time. And you have the nerve to use that as an excuse to clear your daughter?"Eliana's father's face darkened."Lyra, don't take this too far."Mr. Hale stepped f

When the sun came up, Theodore stopped making excuses for what he had done.He gave the police the cloud-storage login, the original audio files, and every chat log.The operating room light went dark. The doctor came out and told us I needed to be transferred to the territory's top medical center.Theodore stepped forward immediately. "I am going with her."My father glanced at him. "What right do you have?""I know her. I know everything about her. I know when she sleeps she—""You know her?"My father did not let him finish. "You knew her well enough to strike where it hurt most every time."They wheeled me out of the operating room, still unconscious.Theodore had barely started toward me when the heart rate on my monitor spiked.A nurse stepped between us. "Her heart rate is spiking. Please step back."He had not said a word yet.But my body knew his scent far too well.My father watched the monitor. "She will not forgive you. She isn't even conscious, and she's still afraid of yo
