JULIA

Professor Bancroft's eyes darkened and his jaw ticked as he watched me. He had expected me to decline the subtle challenge and walk away with my tail tucked between my legs.

He straightened, his fingers brushing against the front of his shirt in a practiced move.

"Very well then" he said evenly and turned around.

I watched him as he reached for his notepad, my mind warring with an internal battle.

'Turn around and leave' it screamed at me but I stood stiffly, refusing to lose.

"Leave your contact information here" he held out a thin piece of paper and his pen.

I looked from his fingers holding them loosely to his eyes and I saw it again.

The challenge. An opportunity to say no and run.

"Okay," I said, my voice a lot firmer. I reached for the paper and our fingers brushed, just briefly and I pulled away.

Professor Bancroft eyed me as I scribbled my phone number on the thin paper. Once I finished, I handed it over to him, taking great care not to brush against his finger.

A moment passed and he retrieved it.

"I'll look forward to hearing from you" I said with a sweet smile, issuing my own challenge. It was up to him to back down now.

I turned around and walked out of his office, my posture upright even though my heart was beating erratically in my chest.

Once I closed Professor Bancroft's door behind me, I exhaled loudly. Keeping my hand over my pounding heart, I scurried out of the faculty office hallway and back to the student waiting area.

Nina was the only one in the hallway and she looked up at the sound of my footstep.

"Julia?"

"Let's go" I said and grabbed her arms, pulling her out of the exit.

"Julia, what happened?"

"Let's go" I insisted urgently and she let me pull her away.

Our ride home was silent, my head filled with the brief but intense encounter with Professor Bancroft. He'd lectured me for two years. This was the third semester and I'd never had any personal encounter with him.

Until now.

The details of his offer stayed cryptic but the intention was clear. And I should have screamed at him from the first offer and turned away but I didn't. And now, I was counting on him to back down.

"Okay. Tell me what happened" Nina asked as soon as we were behind our dorm door.

"With?"

"Professor Bancroft of course. He heard you call him names and he was very pissed"

I shrugged nonchalantly and she watched me closely.

I kept my expression neutral as I responded. "Nothing"

"Nothing? You mean he just let you go like that?"

"He let me off with a warning" I lied through my teeth. Nina stared at me in disbelief, trying to read me and get the answer she was looking for.

"I'm going to take a nap" I mumbled and walked past her, into the bathroom, and took a shower. I struggled to keep my mind off Professor Bancroft and his offer until I lay down for a nap.

When I opened my eyes again, the sky had darkened. Nina was laughing loudly on her phone with someone I presumed was her boyfriend. My fingers instinctively reached for my phone.

I checked my messages first and saw nothing. Not a message from Professor Bancroft.

The emotions were a strange mix inside of me.

Disappointment? Or excitement that he had backed out and I had won by default. I couldn't tell which was which.

"What are your plans for the short holiday?" Nina asked and I only just noticed her call had ended.

"Jared and I are going camping" I hummed in my throat as I thought about it.

I couldn't go home for the holiday. Not because I didn't have any family but because they had concluded I was a huge disappointment for deciding to get a degree in 'sex'

Over the years, I'd grown tired of explaining it all to them. They'd never understand so I found it useless to keep explaining.

"I'll just stay in the dorm and catch up on my studies"

"That's boring Julia. You should come with us"

"No. I would hate to be a third wheel" I said with a smile. Jared and Nina were good friends who tried to include me in everything but I'd rather not spend a whole week watching them suck face.

"Timothy will be joining" I scowled at the mention of Jared's best friend.

"I'll pass. Besides I need to work on my writing if I'm going to pass Professor Bancroft's class at the end of the semester"

"Ughh...I really wish you'd come" Nina grumbled but she was already back to clicking on her phone.

My phone vibrated on the bed and I picked it up. A message displayed on the screen.

9pm. I'll pick you up.

                 ~Edmund Bancroft

I stared at Professor Bancroft's full name at the bottom of the text.

My pulse raced the longer I stared at it and mild irritation prickled at me. He didn't back down.  He'd only thrown the challenge back at me.

My grip on my phone tightened. He was ridiculous if he thought I was going to back down.

"I have to go Julia. I'll see you later" Nina shouted as she hurried out of the dorm. I looked back at the text on my phone and at the time.

I had two hours until he arrived. I could text back and let him know I wasn't interested. But my curiosity was stronger so I rose from my bed.

My shower was longer than usual. I took my time washing myself and then oiling my skin. I skimmed through my wardrobe as I searched for something appropriate but daring.

My eyes stopped on the green dress and my fingers brushed against the material. Soft.

I pulled it off the hanger and slipped it on. The material clung tightly to my frame, neckline plunging deep to reveal the outline of my breast.

I stared at myself a little too long as I applied my lipstick.

'What are you dressing up for?' The voice in my head screamed and I paused.

'The challenge' a darker voice whispered and my fingers moved again.

I wasn't dressing up for him.

I was dressing up for the battle I didn't intend to lose.

JULIAI was barely recovering from the shock when he dragged me backward. My heart was pounding in my chest, unable to believe it. The strict Professor Bancroft was in a club. And in a questionable area. The door opened and I was dragged out to the top of the stairs with minimal light but enough to see the anger in his eyes and the black mask.Professor Bancroft tore it off."What are you doing here?" He barked at me, his jaw ticking. The shock wore off quickly at the sound of his voice. I crossed my arms over my chest as I stared him dead in the eye."I could ask you the same thing" His eyes twitched and my lips curved."I bet you wouldn't have an answer to that"His face reddened and I expected an explosion from him but he turned away, reaching for the door."Leave"My nerves pricked in irritation at being told what to do."Why?""This isn't a place for little girls" I scoffed at him. "Really? But it's fine for you""You don't know what goes on in there""And I'm more curious to f

JULIAMy eyes swept over the packed club. Coloured lights spread across the dance floor and the heavy bass music vibrated against my chest, reminding me of the exact reason I didn't like clubs.I looked over at Nina, already nodding her head in tune to the music and searching for her boyfriend in the packed crowd. As if sensing my eyes on her, she glanced at me."What's wrong?" She yelled over the loud music."This is more than I expected" I yelled back and she broke into a new smile."You'll have fun" she tried to encourage and I looked back at the crowd.I really doubted I'd have fun in a place like this. But I'd agreed to come, so I had to endure it."I'm going to grab us some drinks" she yelled again and before I could stop her, I saw her blend into the crowd."Damn it, Nina!" I muttered under my breath, walking on the edge of the dance floor, heading for the darker spot in the club.I'd just settled on an empty seat when a voice called my name. I froze and slowly turned around.T

JULIAI pushed the door open into Professor Bancroft's office. His eyes followed me as I walked, the relaxed posture unsettling me."Sit" the sharp order followed and I obeyed. My legs were trembling and it felt like they'd give out if I didn't sit down quickly."The essay is ready" I said softly, meeting his gaze for a second and quickly averting it as I reached for the copies I'd printed during the day."I want to hear it" "You won't look at it?" I asked sharply, feeling myself getting irritated. "No""But...""Did you write the essay yourself Miss Walker?""Of course I did" I retorted sharply."Let me hear it" I formed. What was the point of writing five hundred words if he only wanted to hear me say it? My fingers curled. He was only trying to torture me."We don't have all day Miss Walker" he growled, twirling a fancy pen between his fingers. My eyes followed the movement and then I drew my gaze back to his face."Love""Obsession first" he growled."There's no order" I watche

JULIAMy fingers flexed around the strap of my back and my heart raced. Professor Bancroft gathered his books, not sparing me a glance until the door closed behind the last student. And then he looked up again.I sucked in a breath as our gaze clashed, suddenly very self aware under his gaze."You weren't paying attention" he said sternly and a wave of what I refused to accept as disappointment rushed through me.I'd expected him to mention the evening at his home but from the look on his face, I had a feeling he wouldn't be addressing that."Julia" he snapped again, his voice echoing my name like a smooth caress."You've never struggled in my class before" he ground out."And yet I keep failing" I muttered under my breath and he arched a perfectly carved brow at me."If you can't concentrate in my class...""I'm fine Professor" I cut him off and his gaze narrowed at me. He probably hated my rude interruption, or maybe it was the impatient tone in my voice that irked him."Then why co

JULIAI couldn't stop thinking about the night at Professor Bancroft's home. The line I discovered I couldn't cross. The way his eyes stared at me as if he could read through me. It made me ask myself a lot of questions. And what lingered on my mind and made my fist clench repeatedly was the message he'd sent. That had been his way of telling me that he'd won and there was never a chance for me.I stared at it for long hours after I returned to my silent dorm room. Nina had been waiting with a lot of questions but I managed to brush her off and buried myself under my warm covers. It had been exactly six days since I left his home. And in less than 48 hours, I'd be sitting in the same class that he was going to lecture in. I didn't think I could look him in the eye but determination burned low in my stomach. I may have bolted from his house but that didn't end the challenge. If I avoided his gaze, I'd only be a bigger loser. I was determined to stare him deep in the eye and prove tha

JULIAI shifted uneasily at the question. Professor Bancroft's eyes stayed on me even though I wished he would look away."What needs to be written?"He shook his head. "I want details Julia" his gaze darkened again."I want to hear all of it"I swallowed again, my throat felt too dry."Chemistry and tension""No feeling" he said in the same even tone."Have you ever been with a man Julia?" I flushed instantly at the question. The urge to hide my gaze was strong but I stopped myself. I had no reason to be embarrassed."Of course" I couldn't help the defensive tone I used. Professor Bancroft hummed, as if digesting the information."Then I'm right to think you aren't unfamiliar with the art of pleasure...sex""No""Then you must be able to write something you have experienced easily?" I stared at Professor Bancroft's, whose eyes hadn't left mine once. His questions were drifting towards an edge that made me furrow my brows. Was he digging for a specific answer?"I don't understand how
