Regina’s POV

I felt wrung out.

Hollow.

Like something had been scraped clean from inside of me.

My eyes burned from crying, but at least I had the sense to do it alone, in the quiet of the hospital corridor, where no one could witness the collapse.

I hated weakness. Hated the heaviness in my bones that felt permanent.

It had always felt permanent.

By the time I had driven back, my head pounded and my body felt lethargic.

I didn’t know the last time I had a proper night’s sleep or had a proper meal.

The Veyron estate was quiet when I stepped inside.

Too quiet,

My heart lurched when I went upstairs and peeked into Mia’s room. Relief washed over me so forcefully that I almost buckled where I stood.

Both Mia and Ivan were curled up in her little single bed, tangled together like puppies. His small arm draped protectively over her while her cheek was pressed into his shoulder. Their breathing was steady, untouched by the chaos swirling in the adult world.

I wish this kind of peace was some

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 142: Undone

Maxwell’s POVThere was an itch under my skin.I wanted to get out of this bed, get out of this hospital, and never look back.I wanted to spend time with Ivan and Mia. My sweet, innocent children who had done nothing wrong to deserve all of this. This world wasn’t fair. This life wasn’t fair. When the door clicked shut behind Regina and the silence pressed down on me, I let every negative feeling resurface. You put your kids in danger. You let someone deranged live with Ivan. You entrusted your son to someone who had the capacity to... to kill.I shuddered at the reminder. The past couple of days, while the painkillers had been making me sleep, the flashes of Ivan and Mia’s tear-streaked cheeks and fearful eyes did not leave my mind for a second. They were there, within the darkness, grasping at each other for support as Morgana held them at gunpoint. How could I have been this foolish?Another pang of guilt made me clench my heart.Regina.She’s been here, worried for me, looking af

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 141: Hurt Buried Within

Regina’s POVI watched from the corner of the room while the resident doctor physically examined Maxwell and looked at his charts, humming thoughtfully every couple of seconds.I had sent the children home with Mother, wanting them to spend the least amount of time they could at the hospital. I wanted them far from this sterile room, away from the smell of antiseptic and the faint, metallic tang of blood that still lingered on Maxwell’s skin despite repeated cleanings. Ivan and Mia had been through enough already. They deserved one night where they could sleep without hearing sirens in the distance or imagining Morgana’s voice whispering liesI felt bone-tired. The kind of tired I had felt a long, long time ago. The time I didn’t like thinking about. But I needed to be here for Maxwell, just like he had been there for me earlier, when Morgana had our children in her clutches.Maxwell had been there for me in that warehouse. He’d thrown himself in front of a bullet for me. For our chil

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 140: First Steps

Regina’s POVMaxwell looked smaller in the hospital bed than I’d ever seen him. His left shoulder was heavily bandaged, his arm immobilized in a sling, and pain medication had left dark circles under his eyes. But when I knocked softly on his door, carrying Mia while Ivan bounced beside me, his face transformed with something I’d almost forgotten existed—pure joy.“Daddy!” Ivan rushed to the bedside, careful not to bump Maxwell’s injured shoulder. “Are you really okay? The nurses said you were sleeping for two whole days!”“I’m okay, buddy.” Maxwell’s voice was hoarse but steady. “The doctors fixed me up good as new.”Mia pressed closer to my side, her small hand gripping mine tightly as she stared at the man in the hospital bed. This was the moment I’d been dreading—the first time Maxwell would speak to our daughter knowing she was his child.“Mia,” I said gently, “remember what we talked about in the car?”She nodded solemnly, her gray eyes wide and uncertain.Maxwell shifted carefu

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 139: The Truth About Love

Morgana’s POVMother sat across from me in the visiting room, wearing the same faded cardigan she’d had since my childhood, but something was different about her posture—straighter, firmer. She looked at me with the same gaze she’d had the night she killed my stepfather.“Hello, Morgana,” she said quietly.“You shouldn’t have come.”“Where else would I be? My daughter needs me.”I stared at the table between us, unable to meet her eyes. “I shot him, Mother. I shot Maxwell.”“I know.”“I didn’t mean to. I was aiming at Regina, and he—” My voice broke. “He threw himself between us. He chose to protect her instead of me.”“Of course he did.”I looked up sharply. “What?”“Of course he protected the woman he loves. That’s what people do when they actually love someone—they protect them without thinking about the cost.”“But I love him—”“No, sweetheart. You’re obsessed with him. There’s a difference.”“That’s not true.”“Isn’t it?” Mother leaned forward. “Tell me, Morgana—when did you ever

  • After I Died, He Truly Panicked   Chapter 138: The Last Gift

Morgana’s POVThe gun fell from my hands like it was burning my skin. Maxwell lay on the concrete floor, blood pooling beneath his shoulder, and all I could think was that I’d killed the only man I’d ever loved.“No, no, no,” I whispered, reaching toward him before FBI agents grabbed my arms. “Maxwell, please—I didn’t mean to hurt you.”But he wasn’t moving. His eyes were closed, his face gray with shock and blood loss. Regina knelt beside him, pressing her hands against the wound while screaming for paramedics.I’d shot him. I’d actually shot Maxwell. The agents were saying something, but their voices sounded like they were coming from underwater. Everything felt distant and unreal, like I was watching someone else’s nightmare.“Maxwell?” I called desperately as they dragged me away from his body. “Maxwell, I’m sorry! I love you! I didn’t mean—”“Ma’am, you need to calm down,” one of the agents said, but I couldn’t calm down. I couldn’t process what I’d done. The children were scream
