Chapter 1

“Tessa, help me arrange a false death.”

The moment the call connected, I got straight to the point.

Tessa fell silent. “What happened?”

I lowered my eyes to the photos still glowing on my screen.

In them, Cassian was half-naked, with bite marks across his neck. The one taking the photo had stood close enough to make sure I would see everything.

“I don’t want this anymore,” I said. “In five days, I’m leaving with the pup.”

Tessa’s voice changed at once. “Have you thought this through? The mate bond is still there. If he wants to find you, he will.”

“So I need the witch’s draught too,” I said. “I want the link severed.”

She was quiet for a moment, then said, “That draught doesn’t just cut the bond. It hurts. Once it starts working, it’ll feel like the link is being torn out of you little by little.”

“I know.”

“And the pup?”

“The pup comes with me. He’ll never know he has one.”

Tessa let out a long breath. “All right. I’ll handle it. Five days from now, a wreck on the mountain road. Fire. Death.”

I had just hung up when I heard a transport roll into the courtyard below.

Cassian was home.

I locked my phone and got to my feet. The bedroom door opened almost at once.

He came in fast, took one look at me, and crossed the room. His hand touched my forehead, then settled on my shoulder.

“Why do you look so pale? Are you feeling sick again?”

I looked at him and said nothing.

If not for those photos, I had meant to tell him tonight that I was carrying his baby.

When I didn’t answer, he crouched in front of me and placed his palm over my stomach. His voice softened.

“The healer said you can’t overexert yourself now. No stress. No shocks. No strong emotions. Is the pup troubling you?”

At the word pup, my fingers curled, but he either didn’t notice or chose not to.

“When the pup is born, I’ll be a good father,” he said. “Nothing will happen to you or the pup.”

He sounded so sincere that for one terrible second, I almost believed him.

But last night, he had been with someone else.

“I’m fine,” I said. “Just tired.”

Cassian took my hand.

“Lyra, I know you’ve been wronged lately. Selene’s sudden return stirred up too many old matters in the pack. I couldn’t just ignore all of it. But you need to understand this, you are not the same as her.”

He looked at me and went on in that same steady voice.

“You are my Luna. You’re carrying my pup. No one can take your place.”

Then he dropped to one knee before me, his hand still resting over my stomach.

“I’ll take responsibility for both of you. When the pup is born, the whole of Frostmoon Pack will know that you and the pup matter most to me.”

My throat tightened.

Cassian did love me. I had never doubted that.

But he had still betrayed me.

That was what made it unbearable.

I drew my hand back and asked quietly, “Cassian, if one day I disappeared, would you come looking for me?”

His expression changed at once.

“Don’t say things like that. With the mate bond between us, where could you possibly go?”

I said nothing.

He was right. As long as the bond remained, he would always be able to find me.

But five days from now, that bond would no longer lead him to me.

Cassian took my silence for unease and pulled me into his arms.

“Don’t think too much,” he said. “I’m here.”

I closed my eyes and breathed in the scent I knew so well, but my heart only grew colder.

Five days from now, I would leave with this pup.

From that day on, the pup would never call him father.

And I would never look back again.

On the day he was discharged, he asked to take me to the restaurant I used to love.Just like seven years ago, he walked beside me looking almost hopeful.I felt only tired. When the food came, he placed a dish in front of me himself.“You always liked this one most.”I looked down at it, then back at him.“I don’t anymore.”He froze.I set down my chopsticks.“Seven years is long enough to change anything. The Lyra who loved this, the Lyra who loved you, died on that road.”He went pale.“No.”“Yes.”I rose to leave. He stood so quickly that the chair legs scraped hard against the floor.“Sit back down. Please. Just a little longer. I can make this right.”I looked at him and felt that same deep fatigue again.“You still think love is something you can get back by refusing to let it end.”His face tightened. Then, with sudden desperation, he pulled out the folding knife he had been carrying since the pack clinic and held it against himself.“If you leave now, I’ll do it.”I stared at

Cassian found me three days later. Not at the Project. Not at my quarters. At my grandfather’s house. He stood outside the gate and refused to leave. The first day, he stood under direct sun until his skin burned. The second, rain drenched him through by nightfall. The third, he was still there when the lamps came on.On the fourth morning, he collapsed. They took him to the pack clinic. He burned with fever and woke demanding to see me. When the attendants brought food, he refused it. When they tried to sedate him, he fought them.In the end, I went.I walked into his room already angry.“Cassian, you’re past forty. Can you stop using your own body like this?”He looked up at once. Then, absurdly, he smiled and held out a box.“I got this for you.”Inside was a new moon-wolf carving from a market line I used to collect. Before I could speak, he reached under the pillow and pulled out a bundle of cards tied in cord.“I wrote these over the years,” he said, almost eagerly. “Every place

Selene lived. But the injury kept her from dancing again, and whatever future she had tried to claw back for herself collapsed with it.She reported Cassian. There were inquiries, hearings, and accusations. Favoritism. Improper conduct. Infidelity after formal bonding. The scandal spread quickly through the pack academy and the pack.Cassian did not defend himself. When they moved to strip him of rank, he submitted his resignation before they could finish. He told the elders he was no longer fit to teach young wolves anything. Then he disappeared.I heard all of this seven years later.By then, the Dawnreach Research Center had entered its second phase. For seven years I had lived under another name, behind secured gates, among research halls and controlled compounds. It was the first time I had stepped into a public market in all that time.I never expected to see him there.Cassian had aged more in seven years than some wolves did in twenty. He was leaner, rougher, the lines around h

  • After My False Death, My Alpha Lost Everything   Chapter 7

By the time dusk fell, Cassian looked nothing like the youngest alpha Frostmoon Pack had once admired. His shirt hung loose, his hair was damp with sweat, and he moved through the streets like a wolf who had lost his way and forgotten how to stop. When he got back to the house, some part of him still expected the same small, familiar scene. Lyra would come running out at the sound of the door, throw herself into his arms, and laugh as if nothing in the world could really break between them. But when he pushed the door open, the house was dark.No light. No scent of warm food.No soft voice calling his name.He went straight to the bedroom and stood there breathing in the last traces of her. Then he saw the papers on the bedside table. His heart lurched. For one wild second, he thought she had left him a note. Thought this might still be some cruel punishment, some test he could survive if he just endured it long enough. He snatched them up.What he found was worse: the signed bond-brea

The old alpha looked at Cassian with cold, steady contempt.“When she wanted to be with you, I refused,” he said. “She knelt outside my study for three days and three nights. She kept telling me you would treat her well, that you were the wolf she trusted most in this world. She even threatened to sever ties with me for your sake.”Cassian dropped to his knees. The old alpha did not stop.“And you promised me you would protect her. That you would cherish her. Instead, you let another wolf humiliate her, wound her, and drive her out while you stood there talking of obligations.”His voice hardened further.“Do you know what she gave up to stay with you? If not for you, Lyra would have taken the path her parents once chose., the same path her parents once chose. She gave that up because she wanted an ordinary life with you.”Cassian’s face had gone completely bloodless. The old alpha held the urn in one arm.“I was the one who ordered the cremation. You do not deserve to see her one last

Cassian stood there as if the words had struck him numb. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then his voice finally came out broken.“That’s impossible. You made a mistake.”“Lyra was waiting for me. We were supposed to eat together. She can’t be dead.”The voice on the other end stayed flat.“We found her identification in the transport. The pack guards confirmed her identity.”Something seemed to collapse inside him.His knees nearly gave way. He caught himself against the wall.Selene stepped forward at once. “Cassian, could this be some kind of trick? Maybe she was angry you came to see me and wanted to scare you. Some wolves do things like that when they want to be chased.”He seized on that at once.“Yes. That’s it. She’s angry. She’s trying to frighten me.”But before he could say more, another message came through.A video.A transport crushed beneath a freight hauler on the road outside the lower market. Fire. Screaming. Then nothing.Cassian opened it with shaking hands. When
