Sweat drips down my back, stinging the open cuts that are taking forever to heal and I'm fairly sure my right shoulder is dislocated, but Levi, the third ranked warrior in my class, is still standing and my father will not accept anything less than first place, even during training, so I grit my teeth and force myself into position. Gene has a secret, I've known for a while but just assumed he had an embarrassing crush or something. Maybe she's too young or too old, maybe it's a guy or someone already mated. This has felt like the longest week of my life, everyday after school I’ve come home with my mother to cook and clean the house, forbidden to go for a run unless I’m with someone from my family and even then it’s restricted to a short one before we go to my Grandparent’s to check on them. My Gran is a kindly old woman, but she’s like a replica of my mother and Tabitha, she doesn’t understand why I would want anything more than to settle down with my mate. Gene started acting weird during training, so when he said he had to be somewhere straight after then ran off before I could ask him anything about it, I followed him. From enough of a distance that he wouldn't realise if he was checking, but he's being sloppy anyway, rushing towards the old quarry and I suddenly wonder if he's meeting someone here. There’s screaming and sobbing when I come to. Gene is pulling me upright, shaking me and calling my name in a panic. My body hurts, far more than I remember it hurting before but it takes seeing Seraphina completely covered in blood, Levi trying to talk to her and stop her screaming for her dad, to remember what was going on. I try to scramble to my feet, looking around and seeing the dead bodies of the six rogues, the closest one to me is barely recognisable, torn apart. “Did you do this?” I ask Gene, falling back onto my ass. He looks at me in confusion, but doesn’t get a chance to say anything because Seraphina’s dad is bursting through the woods and gathering her into his arms.
