Evangeline – POV

The air in the restaurant turned suffocating for me. My breath stuttered in my chest, and I could feel every beat of my heart like a drum inside my ears. My fingers twitched on the table as my son’s innocent voice echoed so loud, so cruel without knowing.

“…a little sister soon!”

The words felt like acid in my veins. Lora’s face flushed red instantly. She fumbled with the napkin on her lap, not meeting my eyes. Nathan froze, his mouth parted like a man caught mid-lie. His eyes darted between his son, his Lora, and me. I could see the panic setting in behind them.

A little sister. So, it was real after all.

I stared at them, my ex-husband and the woman I had pulled off the streets like a dying bird. I couldn’t breathe. My lungs turned into cold steel.

I stood up so suddenly my chair screeched back against the floor. Noah’s big eyes looked up at me with confusion, the remnants of his joy still on his face. It broke me more than anything else could have.

Evangeline's POVThe morning sun filtered through the cheap curtains like golden fingertips, brushing against my cheek, coaxing me awake.I didn’t move. For a long moment, I just lay there—staring at the ceiling of the hotel room I’d booked for the month. It wasn’t home. At least it was mine for now. My little corner of the world. Temporary, but still a place to breathe.Eventually, I dragged myself up and padded to the bathroom. I let the shower run a bit too hot, let it sting the skin on my back until the fog in my head started to clear. Still, I couldn’t shake the weight in my chest. The dream had come again. The forest. The eyes. The feeling of being watched.I pushed it aside like I always did. Ever since I left Nathan and moved on, I have been having weird dreams especially each time I had a tantrum with that cold-hearted CEO.After dressing in high-waisted jeans and a soft knit top earthy green, my comfort color, I tied my curls into a loose bun and grabbed my tote. It was the

Damien's POVThe room swallowed me whole the moment I stepped in. I didn’t bother turning on the light. Moonlight bled in through the high windows, casting silver streaks across the floor, over the corners, like the house itself was holding its breath. The silence here was different, denser and much personal. Edward’s voice still echoed faintly in my head, but I shoved it away as I shut the door behind me and locked it. The click of the lock felt final. I crossed the room, my footsteps heavy against the floors, until I reached the built-in shelf tucked discreetly behind a wall panel. Gave it One push, and it opened with a low sigh. Inside sat a single bottle. Dark amber. Aged longer than some wars I’ve fought in. I pulled it free without hesitation, uncorked it, and downed the first swallow like it owed me pain. The burn hit instantly. Deep in my chest, like fire catching bone. I didn’t stop. Three long gulps later, my hand tightened as I stared at the glass. The memory of Y

Damien’s POVYharina’s footsteps faded behind me, the soft rustle of her robe brushing against the floor like finality as she retired for the night.I stood still, stag at nothing in particular, though I saw nothing. My hands tightened to my sides. My chest tightened, my lungs struggling to fill themselves. The healer’s words reverberated in my skull with a quiet violence.“She will die anyway…”“And you will go feral…”I raked a hand through my hair and turned away from the hearth, pacing the length of the room like a caged beast. The tiles swallowed the sound of my footsteps, but it didn’t lessen the storm inside. The walls suddenly felt closer than they should, the ceiling lower. The weight of the truth pressed down on me, cruel and cold.I was the Alpha. The leader of one the most powerful packs in the northern territories. I had stared down death, led wars, quelled rebellions with nothing but a word. And yet, one woman. One infuriating, sharp-mouthed, doe-eyed human woman with a

Damien's POV I didn’t move at first. The soft click of the office door echoed in the silence behind me, but my eyes remained fixed on Madelyn. Her dress pooled around her feet like a silken puddle, her body reeking with want. But I felt nothing. No tightening hunger in my groin. No animal pull in my core. No surge of lust. Just a growing stillness inside me, like ice hardening around a truth I didn’t want to admit. Her scent, once intoxicating, was no longer enough to stir me nor arouse me. Madelyn reached toward me, her bare form faltering slightly, the desperation in her eyes unhidden now. “Please…” she said again. “Damien, it’s been too long.”I clenched my jaw. “Get dressed.”Her lips parted slightly. Hurt flashed across her face, but it wasn’t real pain, it was her pride wounded. She was the mistress of the Alpha, the seductress of the high court. She was used to getting what she wanted. Especially from me. But I wasn’t the same Alpha anymore. “You just drank from me,” sh

Damien’s POV “Drink from me,” she said again, her voice a low murmur but it struck me faster than I expected. The words barely settled between us before her head tilted with practiced grace, her long hair falling away from her neck like it had been rehearsed in a mirror a thousand times. She knew exactly what she was doing, offering herself, her pulse, her history. And my beast, my cursed, unruly, aching beast recognized the invitation before my mind could even protest. I saw her bared throat. Pale. Warm and open. The soft skin stretched with the tension of a heartbeat. Her breath came slow but deep, steady despite the danger she was stepping into. I should stop her. Called her out for her games, for her manipulation, for using the part of me that I had locked away like a snarling dog in the deepest part of me. But I didn’t. Instead, my hand moved, swift, unthinking and wrapped around her neck instantly. Not cruelly nor violently. Just… instinctively. My fingers curved to th

Damien's POV The silence between us stretched quiet, but not peaceful. Madelyn's fingers still rested lightly against my cheek, but they had changed and slid down, lazily tracing the shape of my jaw. She wasn’t just touching, she was studying, reminding of her. I stepped back but she followed. The kind of woman who never needed to move fast to close distance. All she had to do was exist, as the air between us folded. "Madelyn," I said, my voice low and firm, letting the name settle between us like a line I didn’t want crossed. Her eyes gleamed. The soft curve of her lips pulled into a knowing smirk, and she rose from the chair with elegance that had always felt rehearsed. Her hands smoothed over her hips, her body shifting with calculated grace. And then, slowly, pointedly, she stepped closer to me. Much closer. I could see the way her gown clung to her curves, the neckline low enough to tease. But this time, she made sure I noticed. She shifted her shoulders back just e
