Otto’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stared at the lotus emblem. The silver design caught the light, familiar curves that had haunted the margins of notebooks years ago. The same design he now carried permanently on his skin.
Could it really be her? After all this time?
He moved closer in the line, craning his neck for a better view. The woman had her head bowed as she signed a book, her honey-brown hair cascading forward to hide her face. Something about the curve of her neck, the delicate way she held her pen...
Emma turned back to him with a curious expression. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Otto muttered, not taking his eyes off the author. The scent grew stronger as he approached, vanilla and moonflowers, but underneath it was something distinctly wolf. Pack. His fingers unconsciously traced the tattoo on his shoulder through his shirt.
When he was just three people away from the front, the author looked up to thank the fan she’d just served, and Otto froze. Those eyes, amber with flecks of gold around the pupil. He’d know them anywhere, even if everything else about her had changed. Gone was the shy, hunched posture. Gone were the oversized sweaters and the glasses that had hidden her face. In their place sat a confident woman whose beauty had only grown in the five years since he’d seen her last.
Nora. Nora Stirling was Crystal_Lotus.
His mouth went dry. She hadn’t noticed him yet, too focused on the fan in front of her. Otto’s mind raced. Did she know about the arrangement? Was that why she’d disappeared? Had she been writing these books all along?
The person ahead of him stepped up to the table, and Otto realised with a start that he didn’t even have a book for her to sign. He glanced around frantically, spotting a display of her latest novel on a nearby table. He grabbed one without looking at the cover and stepped forward.
Then it was his turn. He stood before her, book clutched in his hand, words stuck in his throat.
Nora looked up, her practised smile freezing on her face as recognition dawned in those amber eyes. For a split second, he saw panic there, quickly masked by professional courtesy.
“Hello,” she said, her voice steady despite the slight tremor in her fingers as she reached for his book. “Who would you like this signed to?”
As if she didn’t know exactly who he was. As if five years and a thousand regrets didn’t stand between them.
“Otto,” he managed to say. “Otto Forest.”
Her pen hesitated for just a moment before she began writing. The silence stretched between them, charged with unspoken words.
“I didn’t know you were a fan,” she said finally, not meeting his gaze as she continued signing.
“I’m not—“ he started, then winced at how that sounded. “I mean, I haven’t had the chance yet to read your work, busy with work, you know how things are.”
“Right of course, that makes sense. Mr Forest, I hope you enjoy it. I take it you wandered in from across the hall. I asked if I could stop by and take a look at the photos. I like to look at old photos; it helps with writing characters.”
Otto shifted his weight uncomfortably, the book suddenly heavy in his hands. “Actually, I’m... I just wanted to see you.”
The pen in Nora’s hand stilled. Her eyes remained fixed on the page, though he could see her pulse quickening at the base of her throat.
“Five years is a long time,” she said quietly, resuming her signature with practised strokes. “I’m surprised you recognised me.”
“I’d know those eyes anywhere,” he admitted before he could stop himself.
“Right, why would anyone be looking for the school nerd of our year group?”
“I…I tried to reach you many times, I wrote to you, Nora, I tried so many times to say I’m sorry.”
“I know I read them pretty words, but not action, now please I need to get back to work if I’m to join later, don’t tell your friends who I am yet some surprises are better left that way…”
Otto’s pulse quickened as he processed her words. She wanted him to keep her identity secret, which meant she’d be at the reunion later. And she’d read his letters, all those desperate attempts to apologise that he’d thought had disappeared into the void.
“Nora, I—“ he began, but the woman behind him cleared her throat impatiently.
Nora, Crystal, gave him a tight smile as she handed the book back. “Thank you for stopping by, Mr Forest. Enjoy the reunion.”
The dismissal stung, but Otto nodded and stepped away, clutching the signed book to his chest. He glanced down at her elegant handwriting for the first time:
“To Otto – Some mistakes follow us forever. Others teach us to become better. – Crystal_Lotus”
His thumb brushed over the silver lotus stamp beside her signature. The same lotus that marked his shoulder. The same lotus that belonged to her pack—the Moonlit Falls pack. His mind raced as pieces clicked into place. Nora Stirling. Lady Stirling of the Alpha line. Could she be his arranged mate?
It couldn’t be a coincidence.
Otto backed away from the table, nearly colliding with another eager fan. He mumbled an apology and retreated to a quiet corner of the room, unable to tear his eyes from Nora. She continued signing books, smiling and chatting with her readers as if their encounter had meant nothing.
But he had seen the way her hand trembled. The way her scent had spiked with anxiety when she recognised him.
He leaned against the wall, opening the book to flip through its pages. The title caught his attention: “Moon’s Shadow: A Tale of Redemption.” His throat tightened as he read the back cover—a story about a werewolf seeking forgiveness from a woman he had wronged years before.
Had she written this about him? About them?
Otto closed the book, his mind spinning. She knew about the arrangement. She had to. And she’d been avoiding him for five years, building a life and career far from the pack politics that now threatened to bring them together.
“Dude, there you are!” Luke’s voice cut through his thoughts. “What are you doing hiding over here? Everyone’s asking about you.”
Otto quickly tucked the book into his jacket. “Just needed some air.”
Luke peered around him toward the signing table. “So did you meet her? The famous author?”
“Yeah,” Otto said, careful to keep his expression neutral. “She seems... interesting.”
“Man, you wouldn’t believe the rumours flying around about her. Some people think she’s actually from one of the packs, keeping her identity secret.” Luke wiggled his eyebrows. “Mysterious, right?”
Otto forced a laugh. “Sure. Listen, I should get back to the reunion. I’m supposed to give that speech later.”
As they made their way back to the main ballroom, Otto couldn’t help casting one last glance over his shoulder.
Once inside his suite, Otto closed the door and leaned against it, exhaling slowly. The moonlight streamed through his windows, bathing the room in silver. He pulled Nora's business card from his pocket, running his thumb over the embossed lotus.Crystal_Lotus. The name suited her, beautiful yet strong, rare and precious. And soon she would be joining him at his pack, the shared living room between his suite and the Luna suite, which she soon would be moving into, for him to court her properly. The thought of her moving in so close to him sent a rush of heat through his body. Otto loosened his tie and tossed it onto the dresser, trying to process everything that had happened tonight. Five years of searching, of regret, and now Nora would be just on the other side of a shared living space. Close enough to catch her scent every day, yet still separated by walls and the weight of their complicated past.He crossed to the large windows overlooking the forest that surrounded the pack house
Luke and Marcus exchanged glances, visibly processing Otto's words. The tension in the SUV remained thick enough to cut with a knife."So you're saying there's a chance this Nora isn't the Lady Stirling?" Luke asked, his voice unusually subdued.Otto sighed, rubbing his temples where a headache was beginning to form. He didn't want to lie outright to his friends, but he couldn't betray Nora's confidence either. The weight of her business card pressed against his thigh through his pocket, a tangible reminder of their connection."What I'm saying is that regardless of who Lady Stirling turns out to be, our pack needs to make a good impression at the birthday celebration. The Moonlit Falls alliance is too important to jeopardise with immature behaviour."The car fell silent again. Otto turned back to the window, watching the familiar landmarks of their territory slip past. The moon hung heavy in the sky, nearly full, calling to his wolf. His tattoo seemed to burn beneath his sleeve, the
Now, as he moved to one of the passenger seats and the driver returned to the driver's seat, his friends started to file out of the Club one by one.Luke was the first to approach, his eyes narrowed as he took in Otto's rigid posture."Hey, you just disappeared after talking to the book nerd," he said, sliding into the seat across from Otto. "What's going on with you tonight?"Otto's jaw tightened at the dismissive term. Five years ago, he might have laughed along. Now, the casual disrespect made something protective flare in his chest."Her name is Nora," he said, keeping his voice even. "And she's accomplished more in five years than most of us will in a lifetime."Luke raised his eyebrows, exchanging glances with the others as they climbed into the vehicle. "Whoa, when did you become her biggest fan? Last I checked, you were dreading seeing her again."The memory of their earlier conversation in the car made Otto's stomach twist. How quickly things had changed in just a few hours.
Otto frowned as the implications settled over him. Noah Stirling, the Alpha Heir of the Moonlit Falls pack, had deliberately kept them apart for five years. Had he known about Otto’s feelings for Nora back then? Had he intercepted the letters to protect his little sister from someone with Otto’s reputation? The music shifted to something slower, more intimate. Otto watched as Nora gracefully navigated the social circle that had formed around her. She smiled and nodded at whatever Linda Matthews was saying, but Otto could see the tension in her shoulders, the way her fingers occasionally smoothed the fabric of her dress, a nervous habit he remembered from their school days.He needed to know more about this arrangement. If Noah had been the one to suggest it, after years of keeping them apart, there had to be a reason.“Earth to Otto,” came a voice beside him. It was Emma Chen, her expression curious as she followed his gaze to where Nora stood. “You’ve been staring at her for the past
“Your last name mostly, and maybe hope, to change the ending of this story.”“Please, Otto, no one can know yet, not till the party, that I’m an Alpha’s daughter, not some random she-wolf. My father has always been private, and I’m the youngest of my father’s line, and let’s just say I’m guessing my brother got the letters and thought I don’t know…”“That might be an issue,” Otto said, keeping his voice low. “But I understand why you’d want to keep it private.”His mind raced, processing this new information. If Noah had intercepted his letters, that meant the Alpha Heir of Moonlit Falls had deliberately kept them apart. Had Noah arranged this mating to torture him? Or was there something else at play?Otto watched Nora’s face carefully. The bar's soft lighting caught the gold in her amber eyes, highlighting the wariness there. She looked ready to bolt at any moment, like a deer sensing danger.“How did you find out about the arrangement?” he asked, needing to understand how much she
When she reached the bar, she spoke to the attendant, “Sage mint tea, no milk or sugar, please, sorry, I know it’s not what you’d usually get asked for, it’s just I don’t drink, and I have an early start tomorrow. The life of an author.”The bartender nodded with a smile. “Not a problem at all. One sage mint tea coming right up.”Otto watched as Nora drummed her fingers lightly against the polished wood of the bar, her gaze fixed on some distant point across the room. This was his chance. He pushed away from the wall where he’d been waiting and made his way over, heart hammering against his ribs.“Mind if I join you?” he asked, sliding onto the barstool beside her.Nora turned, her amber eyes meeting his with a cool assessment that made him feel transparent. “Free country,” she replied, accepting her steaming tea from the bartender with a quiet thank you.Otto ordered another whiskey, more to give himself something to do with his hands than because he wanted it. The silence between th
