Her brother finished the words as he put her fears into words,

"They would insist that he breed with her before breaking it off!

"Never!" he groaned. "We can't allow that. You will be the one to bear his heir. You can't fail, Bree."

She lowered her head in shame when she recalled how miserably she already failed with the poison dart. Merritt didn't know about the attempted murder. It was best to keep it that way.

"We need to move forward with your mating ceremony," he said in an urgent tone. "Get him to fix a date immediately. It has to be within the next two weeks. Before the coming new moon waxes. Meanwhile, I need information about this girl."

"I'll be visiting the Marq-"

"No!" He snapped. "He's seen too much of you this past day. You'll make yourself scarce around him for now."
