Chapter 16

ผู้เขียน: Alyssa J
"Who?! Besides me, who else could she possibly marry?!"

The assistant's words struck like lightning, splitting open Ethan's chaotic mind.

He practically roared into the phone, his voice raw and desperate.

His face instantly turned deathly pale, all color draining away like water from a broken dam.

In that moment, standing on the sidewalk with people passing by on all sides, he suddenly remembered something.

What I'd said in front of everyone not long ago. At that gathering.

About breaking up.

He'd only thought I was throwing a tantrum then. Being dramatic for attention.

Never seeing the seriousness in my eyes. Never hearing the finality in my voice.

It turned out I'd never lied to him.

Not once.

I truly didn't want him anymore.

I'd meant every word.

He just hadn't believed it. Hadn't wanted to believe it.

He'd arrogantly assumed it was just my way of getting his attention, of manipulating him.

He'd been certain, absolutely certain, that I couldn't leave him.

That I was incapable of it.

They spilled over before I could stop them. Hot tracks down my cheeks.Mom.Oh, Mom.If she could see today. If she could be here now.If she could see how her casual words from years ago had come true in this miraculous way.See me wearing the gown she designed. Walking toward someone who truly cherished and loved me.She would be so, so happy.I knew it in my bones. The wedding day arrived. It was grand. Magnificent. Beyond anything I'd ever imagined. The venue was decorated with thousands of white roses. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, throwing rainbow light across everything. When I put on that gown, I could barely breathe. It fit perfectly. Like it had been made for me. Which, in a way, it had been. The fabric was soft against my skin. The beading caught the light with every movement. I looked in the mirror and saw my mother's vision come to life.Mrs. Shore's diamond earrings sparkled at my ears. The perfect finishing touch.Mr. Shore offered me his arm at the entrance

A week before the wedding, Caspian's parents finally rushed back from Africa. They looked tired from the long journey. Dusty from travel. But their eyes were bright with excitement. The desert winds hadn't diminished Mrs. Shore's enthusiasm at all. Not even a little bit.The moment she walked through the door, she dropped her luggage and came straight to me."Aria! Let me look at you!"She grabbed my hands. Squeezed them tight. Her smile was so warm it made my chest ache.Mr. Shore followed behind her, carrying several suitcases. He set them down with a grunt and gave me a kind nod."Good to see you again, Aria. You look well.""Thank you for coming back so quickly," I said. "I know you were in the middle of important work—""Nonsense!" Mrs. Shore cut me off. "Our son's wedding is the most important thing in the world! Everything else can wait!"She pulled me toward the couch. Made me sit down. Her energy was infectious."Now, I have something for you. I've been carrying it with me for

The act dropped entirely, raw fear replacing it.She crawled toward him again on hands and knees, abandoning all dignity.Desperately clutching at his leg with both hands, this time genuinely crying.Real tears, not the manufactured ones from before."No, don't! Please, Ethan, don't do this!"Her voice broke, becoming high and desperate."I was wrong! I really know I was wrong! I admit it, I admit everything!"The confession came tumbling out in a rush."It was me! All of it was me! But I only did these things because I loved you too much!"She was sobbing now, snot and tears mixing on her face."I couldn't stand the way you looked at her! I couldn't stand you marrying her when it should have been me!"Her fingers dug into his leg, nails catching on fabric."Please, for the sake of how long we've known each other, for the sake of the car accident I was in for you, don't call the enforcer! Please!"She was begging now, all pretense of innocence shattered."Love?"Ethan acted as if he'd

Ethan violently shoved open the villa door with both hands. The force was so great the door slammed against the wall. The massive sound echoed through the empty living room, bouncing off the high ceilings.Making the space feel even more hollow than it already was.Selene sat on the couch in the center of the room, completely at ease.Leisurely painting her nails a deep red color. The picture of domestic comfort, as if she owned the place.Seeing only him return, alone and disheveled, a flash of triumphant glee quickly passed through her eyes.Victory. Finally. But the expression was gone in an instant, replaced by her usual mask.Soft innocence spreading across her features like she was putting on a well-worn costume.Only at this moment did Ethan truly see it.Really see what kind of vicious heart hid beneath that pitiful face. How had he been so blind?Selene put down the nail polish bottle carefully, making sure not to smudge her work. She stood up gracefully, smoothing down her dr

Ethan practically fled in panic, his legs carrying him away before his mind could fully process what he'd just witnessed. Not daring to look back at my figure being held in someone else's embrace. He stumbled back to that villa that now seemed unbearably vast and cold. His heart felt like it was being squeezed by an icy hand, pressure building with each beat.Suffocating pain spreading through his limbs, making each step heavier than the last.He couldn't believe it. Couldn't process it.The person he'd always favored, protected, defended against everyone including me—Was actually such a vicious, two-faced woman. How had he been so blind?Standing outside the closed door of the villa, Ethan felt completely lost for the first time in his life. The night wind blew past, bringing bone-chilling cold that cut through his jacket. But he was oblivious to it, numb to physical sensation. With trembling hands, he pulled out his phone. The screen was too bright, making his eyes water.Or maybe t

But my gaze suddenly froze. My feet stopped moving. Not far away, Caspian stood there quietly. Perfectly still. His dark eyes fixed on me.I didn't know how long he'd been standing there. How much he'd heard. My heart lurched violently. The bottom dropped out of my stomach. An indescribable embarrassment and panic instantly seized me. It gripped my throat like a fist. All those hysterical accusations I'd just made. All that ugly emotion I'd spilled out. All my pain and rage and bitterness. He'd heard everything.Every single word.I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole.I forcibly suppressed the alarm screaming through my veins. Tried to act nonchalant as I walked toward him.Like my world wasn't crashing down. Like I wasn't dying inside. But my body betrayed me.My fingertips trembled slightly. I dug my nails harder into my palm. The sharp pain was the only thing keeping me grounded.I stopped in front of him. Couldn't quite meet his eyes.I forced out a smile. It felt wro
