Valeria:

I woke to warmth.

For a few seconds I didn’t know where I was, only that my cheek rested against something solid and warm, one arm draped across a broad chest while the other was tucked beneath my waist.

When I opened my eyes properly, Nikolai was already awake, sitting slightly upright against the headboard, shirtless, one arm around me, the other resting loosely over the blanket. His hair was still mussed from sleep, and when I lifted my head he was looking down at me.

Heat rushed in

  • Alpha Romanov   Epilogue

Santos:Becoming second Beta had been considerably less satisfying than I once imagined it would be, mostly because Viktor enjoyed reminding me that the word second came before Beta whenever I became too comfortable with myself. He had also taken great pleasure in handing me every tedious report he claimed he was now “too old” to deal with, despite repeatedly proving that age had done very little to slow him down whenever someone challenged him. The bastard had taken on seven men in a corridor and then complained about his back the following morning as though those two things somehow belonged in the same conversation.I had stopped trying to understand him.My office was quieter at night, which was probably why I preferred working after most of the estate had settled. The halls stopped carrying the constant noise that had become normal since little Elena Romanov entered the world and somehow became the most important person in the house without having to do anything except exist. She c

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 119

Valeria:The estate was finally quiet, or as quiet as Romanov territory ever seemed capable of becoming. Somewhere below the balcony, guards changed shifts along the outer grounds, and the distant murmur of wolves carried from the courtyard. The damage left behind by everything that happened with my father would take time to repair, and I knew some wounds would linger far longer than the broken doors and bloodstained corridors. For the first time in what felt like forever, none of that was mine to carry. All I had to do tonight was hold my daughter.Elena slept against my chest, wrapped securely in a pale blanket with only her tiny face showing. Every so often, her nose wrinkled or her lips moved in her sleep, as though she were already preparing herself to complain about something the moment she learned how.Choosing her name wasn’t difficult, she was named after the woman who not only hated me, but was also one of the reasons why she had survived. And had it been a boy, I knew for fa

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 118

Elena:Santos had been asleep for hours. Somewhere along the way, I had started counting each rise and fall of his chest without even realizing it.The doctor had come in twice since the surgery. Both times, he checked Santos’s bandages and pulse, talked about blood loss and recovery, and reminded me yet again that his patient needed rest.As though I were the one keeping him unconscious.I stayed beside the bed with my arms folded, watching him anyway. He looked strange when he was quiet, almost too peaceful. Santos was never peaceful when he was awake. There was always something working behind his eyes, another plan forming or some irritating answer ready before anyone had finished the question. Now his hair was messy against the pillow, his face had lost most of its color, and there was no trace of that smug expression I had spent months wanting to slap off him, and I hated seeing him like this more than I wanted to admit. The door opened quietly behind me. When I glanced over my sh

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 117

Nikolai:There was a reason Alphas were not allowed in the labor room.I had known the rule since I was old enough to understand what a Luna was, long before I ever imagined having one of my own. People blamed instinct and the bond between an Alpha and his mate. An Alpha could feel her distress so sharply that the line between helping and losing control could become dangerously thin. There were old stories about what happened when that instinct won. Most were impossible to verify and probably exaggerated through generations of retelling, but the warning behind them had survived.Keep the Alpha outside, let the healers handle the birth while he paced the corridor and waited to hear that his mate and child were safe… and I fully intended to obey that rule.Until Valeria screamed my name from inside the room, and every damn rule I had ever learned stopped mattering.I headed for the door, but Viktor caught my arm before I reached it. “Nikolai, think about what you’re doing.”“I am thinki

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 116

Valeria:For one awful second, no one moved.Yelena stood at the far end of the corridor with her attention fixed on my mother, while I remained trapped against Mother with the threat of the weapon still frighteningly close. I could feel her breathing change against my back, the uneven rise and fall of her chest faster now and far less certain than it had been only moments ago.“Stay where you are,” Mother warned, turning to face Yelena who obeyed. He stood several feet away with his entire body rigid and his silver eyes fixed on me. I had seen Nikolai angry before and watched him lose control, then force himself back from the edge, but this was different. He looked like a man holding every violent instinct inside himself perfectly still because one wrong decision could cost him me and our baby.Father stood between us looking far too satisfied with the situation he had created.“You see?” he said quietly. “Now everyone understands.”Elena gave him a disgusted look. “No one understand

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 115

Viktor:I found Santos sitting against the wall with one hand pressed tightly to his side.At first, I thought he was simply exhausted. Then I saw the blood soaking through his shirt and spreading across the stone beneath him, and for one long second, every suspicion I had carried about him disappeared beneath something far more immediate.“Santos.” His head lifted slowly. He looked terrible. His face had gone pale, sweat covered his forehead, and sheer stubbornness seemed to be the only thing keeping him conscious. I crossed the corridor and crouched in front of him. “What happened?”His mouth moved into the faintest trace of a smile. “You were right.” I caught his arm and helped him straighten. The moment he shifted, I saw just how badly he was hurt.“Fuck.”A strained breath escaped him that might have been a laugh. “Very professional, Beta.”“Shut up.” I reached toward him, trying to understand how badly he was injured without making things worse. He sucked in a sharp breath and i
