Zayne

I tapped my feet restlessly as we waited. The Air conditioning was on but I was beginning to sweat. The shirt suddenly felt too tight and the air too thick.

Elias didn't look bothered. He hummed away to the music coming from the car radio on low volume.

“How much longer?” I asked impatiently.

I saw him resist the urge to roll his eyes at me.

“Few more minutes. Maybe more.” He shrugged.

“It's taking too long.” I grumbled.

“You're the one who insisted on leaving early even though I warned against it repeatedly.” He replied, his irritation very obvious.

“You're the one who suggested we wait in the shadows like criminals. I should be in there right now.” Even as I said it, I knew how unreasonable I sounded and the look on his face said the same.

“You want to waltz in there, throw her over your shoulders and hop on the next flight out of Maine?” Elias drawled.

“Not exactly that but…”

“Good, then we wait, Alpha.” He said the last word as a way to hold himself back.

Elias and I had a relationship that went farther than an Alpha and a Beta. He was my friend long before he became my Beta and sometimes it was hard not to blur the lines between the two. Especially when it was just the two of us.

His act of helping out Marissa would have been considered betrayal as my Beta. But as my friend, and a friend of Marissa's as well, I could see why he did it. And if he hadn't, we both wouldn't be here. I would have lost Marissa forever.

He sighed and turned off the music. “She lost her memories, Zayne.”

“I know.” I said but he shook his head.

“No, you don't. All of them. She lost all of them. She doesn't remember who her parents were, where she grew up, what her favourite food used to be. Nothing. She doesn't even remember being a werewolf.” His voice was heavy with grief.

He was right. I didn't know. I didn't know exactly how bad the situation was. I wasn't there for her all these years but he was. Through the fear and uncertainty she felt, through the confusion and stress, He'd been by her side.

I ran a hand across my face. “I know you said to take things slow. And I promise I will, I just….” I trailed off.

“You did promise but I don't think you know what taking things slow means.” There was a hint of anger in his voice now.

“Look I was just anxious alright. I haven't seen her in five years.” I threw up my hands in surrender.

“Oh yeah? And whose fault is that?” He scoffed.

“Elias.” I growled in warning.

“I'm sorry. I just don't want anything to hurt her again.” He folded his hands.

“I know that….” I began but he cut me off.

“No, I mean it. You have to promise that if she says she doesn't want you back, you'll let her be. Don't complicate her life further .”

I looked at him in surprise but he wasn't joking. He kept his eyes staring straight ahead, refusing to meet mine but I could see them narrowed in determination. Marissa was still my wife legally since we'd never gone through an official divorce but to Elias, she was his to protect and care for.

I turned away from him. I could get angry at the situation if I wanted but he had every right to feel this way. I had rejected Marissa afterall. I regretted it but for now, that changed nothing.

I sighed in acceptance, “I promise Elias. If she doesn't want me back, I won't put up a fight.”

“Good. Here she comes.” He announced.

I perked up instantly and leaned forward. There, walking out of the building with other workers and laughing with a woman by her side, was my Wife. My Rissa.

It had been more than five years since I last saw her and I didn't know what to expect. She looked even more beautiful than I remembered. Her hair was kept shorter now but that highlighted her facial features better. Her hips swayed in the tight grey skirt she wore. Hips that were curvier than before. Every part of her looked curvier than before.

She looked, well, happy.

It took everything in me not to jump out of the car and rush to her. Take her in my arms and hug her close. Tell her I was sorry.

But Elias was watching me closely and I wasn't entirely sure if I made a move, he wouldn't tackle me to the ground before I got halfway across the car park.

Marissa and her friend got into her car. A small, beat up honda. I stayed still and watched them drive off. The silence in the car stretched for a while.

“She looks happy.” I said finally.

“Yeah. She doesn't remember her past life so there's hardly any bad memories to keep her down.” Elias replied.

“Yeah. But she also seems to really like this place.” I looked up at the company building. “Do you know who owns it?”

“I do,” Elias replied with a suspicious look at me, “Why do you ask?”

“Nothing. Just thinking out loud.” I allowed the statement hang for a few seconds. “And what about the children? My children.”

“Ashlyn and Asher,” Elias chuckled, “bunch of troublemakers those two. They're doing great.”

“When can I see them?” I asked. I knew what his answer was going to be but still.

“Remember what I said about taking things slow?” He shook his head, “It's been five years, Alpha. You don't get to drop into their lives like nothing's happened.”

“Is she seeing anyone?” I asked, ignoring his reply.

“What? No. None that I know of…”

“Good. Let's head back to the hotel then.” I ignored Elias silently seething beside me. I was going to take things slow but not as slow as he intended.

Marissa loved me once. And she would love me again.

Elias Asher was sullen for most of the evening. I didn't try cheering him up. I was feeling pretty sullen myself. He offered me the plate of crudely cut hot dogs. He still wasn't talking much, but that was expected. I hadn't scolded him. Not exactly. I'd just talked to him. I remembered Zayne's mom giving childhood recounts of him as a child. How she figured simply talking and making him see reason worked better than yelling or punishments. I'd told Marissa this, of course, and she was trying her best. The kid just needed a firmer voice. It should be Zayne doing this. Talking to his son, managing his aggression. But he made his choice years ago, and now he wanted to waltz in like the past six years didn't happen. I grunted low in my throat as I tossed the veggies. I shouldn't be thinking that. Marissa wasn't mine. If Zayne wanted to get his wife back, he had every right to. The kids ate and watched TV while I opened a bottle of white wine lying around in the fridge. I

Marissa “What? What are you talking about?" He asked, “No you're not. Who the hell said you were.?" “I am. The Clarkson's think so and I mean who can blame them when…..” " Jeez Rissa slow down. Come on, come on," He led me back to the dining area and pulled out a chair. He sat beside me and took my hands in his. “Calm down ok? What happened?" And then his brows furrowed and he looked around, “Where's Asher? Did something happen to him?" “No. He's in his room. Time out." I answered glumly. All at once the alarm was gone from Elias's face and he sighed in knowing, “What has he done this time?" “Oh it's bad Elias. The worst. He hurt a kid in his class. Stabbed him with a pencil." “What?!" “The kid might need stitches. Oh , I don't know what to do Elias. Asher seems to be getting more aggressive and easily agitated, I didn't know what to do. I'm failing at this, I don't want him in therapy at five years old, I….” " Hey hey hey. No, Rissa. You're not failing, you hear me?” He t

Marissa's Pov “Can you see his arm?" The red faced woman said immediately I opened the door. I suspected she'd had her ear pressed to it though and launching into a tirade was a way for her to cover that. I might be wrong. And I was tired. Whatever burst of anger that had struck in the office left me weary all of a sudden. “Mrs Clarkson,I'm so sorry this happened….." “Sorry? You're sorry?" Her husband leapt up from his seat, leaving poor Brett alone on the bench. “Your son is a menace. What five year old is wicked enough to do this!" His wife nodded, “Brett is a sweet boy. He would never harm anybody. He didn't deserve this at all!" Maybe a little too sweet? I thought to myself as I noticed little Brett had begun to cry and sniffle again. “Listen, I can assure you this is a one time thing. You know kids. You never know what they're capable of and they surprise us at every turn." I smiled politely, staring pointedly at Mrs Clarkson, hoping she would understand. She was a

Marissa's Pov This day couldn't possibly get any worse right? Nightmares, headaches, Jack being shady. A nice trifecta. When my phone rang two minutes into my lunch break, a part of me already knew it wasn't something good. One glance at the caller ID and the feeling was confirmed. It was the twins kindergarten teacher. I groaned in equal parts frustration and anxiety. I hoped no one had fallen ill. “Hello Mrs Day." I answered as sweetly as I could manage. “Hello Miss Thorne. Sorry to intrude on your afternoon but, something's come up." I took a shaky breath and dropped my glazed doughnut after giving it a sad, longing glance. “Is everything ok? Are the twins ok?" “Oh Ashlynn is doing fine. Asher…." She trailed off as though she found the next words difficult to say, then cleared her throat. “Well he is fine too but the other pupil isn't." Oh no. Oh shit. I squeezed my eyes shut. “Please don't tell me he got into a fight." “I'm afraid so. We'll need you to come pick h

Marissa's Pov My breath comes fast. My heartbeat frantic. I'm running again. This time in heels. I catch a reflection of myself in the mirrors lining the hallway as I run past. I'm in a powder blue ball gown and gold heels, hair held up in an elaborate bun, my cheeks rosy pink with blush. I gasp at the image but I don't stop running, platform heels clacking rapidly against the thin carpet. I reach the top of a grand staircase, the type seen only in movies, and without a moment's hesitation, I begin to run down. I'm almost to the bottom when I place a foot wrong. My arms spread out l, grabbing for something, anything to regain my balance. But the bannisters suddenly seem so far away and I'm tumbling the last few steps, the green carpet rushing up to meet my face. I manage to get my hands in front of my face to cushion the fall to the hard floor. But the floor isn't hard. It's…sandy? Soil. I open my eyes to find myself on the forest floor. I gasp and jerk back up. I'm still in th

  • Alpha Zayne's Regret   Chapter 21

Marissa's Pov “He was so sweet and charming. We did the shopping together and he got along really well with Ashlynn.” " Well that's not hard. Ashlynn gets along with everybody. She's a ray of sunshine.” Bridget yawned as she spoke. She'd only just woken up from sleep. Sometimes I envied her single, child free life. " Not everyone exactly. She says she hates The Wilson twins." I countered as I propped the phone with my shoulder so I could fold the laundry with both hands. “Everybody hates The Wilson twins. They're assholes. Anyway, what did you say this man's name was again?" “Zayne Blackwood." I said and again, that feeling of breathlessness at hearing his name swept over me. I placed a hand to my chest and blew out a breath. “Oh my God, did you just swoon?!" Bree cackled. “I did not." I grumbled, “But if you saw him, you would." “Yeahhhhh why didn't I see him at the party? With the way you've described him, I couldn't have missed him." “He left early. Said he had
